A helpful hint. Clamp a straight edge on instead of free handing. It’ll help a lot.

Favorite thing about this video is Laura's willingness to take instruction from Gage on welding and plasma cutting even though he's still a high school student. I know some people wouldn't do that.

To get better looking and penetrating welds make sure the metal is cleaned up down to bare metal, no rust or anything. For straight cuts on plasma, use something as a straight edge like angle iron or tubing etc. as a guide for the plasma torch.

Yeah, I'm no expert welder, but you'd definitely want to grind the rust and paint off and get back to bare metal before welding...

Better to change the grease fitting now and tape it for painting than to chew up a new paint job trying to remove a stuck fitting. The problem with not welding all the way around the plates is water will continue to get under them and rot the metal underneath where you can't treat it.

That round disc under the main deck is called a stump-jumper and is an option. The purpose of it is to help ride the fixed, and spinning, knife bar over a stump or other obstruction. without this option if the knife drive bar hits a stump, the mower would be violently thrown sideways until the stump is cleared. well worth the extra monies. Keep it installed.

just a little hint for you laura,when cutting with a plasma cutter clamp a piece of angle iron on to make a nice straight cuts it makes it easer to weld a new plate of steel back in.your doing a great job their young lady.

What ever made the hole in the rear of the slasher probably caused the twist in the spline on the pto. Must have been a big whack so would be a good idea to check the gear box foe damage.

Brush hogs are great for reducing the spread of weed and sampling control. Great piece of multi use machinery. Man this is a long winter.

Back in the 90's (1990-1997) I worked for an orchardist here in Central Washington and I rebuilt the Brush Hog mower they had. It was much larger than that one, it had 3 sets of blades with 3 gear boxes and 2 bogie wheels on the back. It too had major deck issues which I rebuilt using plates of T1 steel which is specific for high impact areas and I plated over the whole deck with the T1. I also rebuilt all 3 gear boxes with all new bearings, races and seals All in all the mower was virtually like new when I was done with it.

Being a retired Carpenter and College Instructor , it's apparent that Gage has had some training from some very good instructors . He is able to communicate a demonstrate clearly the cause and effect of proper technique . Good job Gage .

Good to see you working on projects like that. There is a lot of equipment out there that can be brought back to life with a little work. Try using a straight edge when you are cutting, makes the patching much easier, and mig does not like dirt and debris so a quick pass with the grinder will make your welds better.

Yay Laura! I love these shop vids! Without giving it away, I think I have an idea of what you 2 are up to with the new 2 you farm kit...just a hunch, anyways. Boy, if everyone else is like me we miss you guys terribly after a week goes by. I know I'm not alone in this, but even a video of breakfast at the Wilson's would be cool beans. Or chili with beans, going to the DMV for sporty licence plates! I really don't think anyone would complain. Ok, I'm spoiled! We want more Laura Farms!!!❤❤❤😂😂😂😊

Laura and Grant. You kids need to find you an old rogator. Take the tank off and all the components that go with it. Turn it into a flatbed put a boom and winch on it also a big toolbox. That way you can keep all your supplies that you need when you guys go out and fix pivots and you won't struggle so much when you go work on them. When your crops are up pretty tall. Keep up the good work all your kids are doing a wonderful job and God bless you💪🇺🇸👍🤗

Need an 'Air Scaler' and an "Angle grinder". Heat works good on those stuck grease fittings, can also get a hammer activated grease fitting (ala Grease Buster) to get them loose. While you have it up in the air... might as well clean up and grease the wheels. Check the drive shaft for the fales carefully... sometimes they wear out. Weld some 1/2" short chains on the back side of the deck, keeps it from throwing stuff out the back. Grease it and pressure wash it after using... it will last 50 years.

I love to watch others repair old equipment and make it great again. May not be as great as it was coming from the factory, but most of the time the equipment is just as good as it was brand new or even better. You two and your little “Mini Me” absolutely make my day.

Because my support arm bent on my brush mower. I cut the support arms and I drilled holes in them put chain in place of the support I cut out. Works great and I can use my quick hitch now.

Laura, you should have put small tack or spot welds all around the plate to stop it from lifting and making a gap while you stitch-welded it later. Good looking welds though.
