Surprisingly the car that’s lasted me the longest is my project car. I have an 85 Honda CRX Si with the twin cam 1.6L engine from the Japanese Si cars swapped in and it never fails me. Besides the one time it blew a transmission… 130,000 miles on the chassis. 55,000 miles on the engine. Sat for 12 years too and started right up with a jump start.

I had a '02 Avalon XL for 6yrs and only got rid of it cuz a family friend was selling their '01 Avalon XL w/ 174k miles and only wanted $2k.. only thing wrong w/ it is the gas gauge doesn't work. But it was a 1 owner and garage kept the 20yrs they had it, and the body, paint, and interior were in immaculate condition. My '02 had multiple small dents and the paint was faded and looked terrible when I bought it. And it had 201k miles when I sold it. So I ended up w/ basically the exact same car but in a diff color, and even though it's a yr older it had about 26k less miles on it and is in way better condition cosmetically... out of the 7 diff vehicles I've owned over the past 21yrs, the 2 Avalons have been the most reliable and cheapest to maintain by far! And whenever I decide to upgrade, I'll more than likely buy a 3rd gen Avalon. I love the 3rd gen body style

Having owned several of these cars in my lifetime LS400, 2001 E55 AMG , Mercedes Benz 190E, 87 Civic Si, 88 Honda Accord Sei and a Toyota Sequoia . I have to say it would be extremely difficult to choose between the LS400 , the E55 AMG or my 2013 Avalon.

High mileage cars are maintained. In the nice barely driven market some miles are so low its an issue. Grandpa's old corvette has a 20k mile engine that needs a rebuild.

Hells Yes! Awesome vid! I would drive any and all of these cars. I've driven half of them. For the towncar, I would get the L series. It was the fleet vehicle of choice for limo companies, and might still be the case. My family has had 2 90s towncars that had far more driver problems than drivetrain problems. I've had 3 EG civics which I beat the crap out of and picked up after 200k mi for $1k ea. I still see the Lexus LS 400 on the road today. I almost bought a saab 900 for $2k but was concerned about part availability. In 1998 I drove a beat up Volvo 740 almost 300mi going 90mph with just my driving permit as a "license". The owner told me "keep it under 100" We shaved an hour off the drive though :D. I've only driven and worked on the 96 accord. I've always wanted a 2000 V6 accord. I beat the absolute crap out of a 90 EF civic EX 5spd I owned. I used to shred motor mounts from the constant clutch dumps I would do in that car. Boy was I young and borderline stupid back then. I work with someone who still drives their 95 e-class. I've only done detail work on an Avalon. I am curious to know how the 1990 Subaru Legacy and the 1998-2000 Toyota Camry competes. I still see tons of Camrys on the road today and I flushed the engine of one that my buddy sludged the engine oil on. To the point where the low oil pressure light came on. We had to add 2 quarts of oil through the dipstick tube just to get it to a garage to do the engine flush. He told me the car drove like new after that, lol. Anyway, great vid! Hope to see more like it. Very ideal.

I had a 1989 Volvo 740 turbo sedan 4-speed manual when I was 16 (loooong time ago). I actually learned how to drive stick on that car after trying to learn on a '97 Nissan hardbody 4x4 unsuccessfully lol... i've owned a few diff manuals and driven even more that were family or friends cars since then, including a '96 Volvo 850 5-speed that I bought when the 740 needed a new turbo.. both of those Volvos are by far the easiest manuals to learn on. I taught a couple of my friends in the 850. Sometimes I wish I would've just replaced the turbo in the 740 cuz it coulda been built in to an ultimate sleeper. And apparently its relatively easy to swap the 4-speed manual w/ a 5-speed Supra (Mk 3 I believe) transmission... I def have to agree w/ you, if I ever run across a 740 turbo manual in decent condition, I would love to buy it as a project to build. Especially a wagon!

If you're not fussy, or you're willing to put some elbow grease into steam cleaning an interior; smokers cars have been properly warmed up before they were driven way more often. Smell doesn't lower longevity. Throwing it in gear cold does.
@christopherlowery855

You could also just buy a car from a warm climate. They don't salt the roads where I live. Virtually every car here has a rust-free undercarriage. That salt is so harsh on the underside that I've seen 5yr old truck chassis falling apart. 20-30 yr old trucks end up having scrap metal parts used to fill in the former frame just to keep the truck from falling apart. As for the smoke, no thanks. Riding around in one of those is like riding around in a car where a dead corpse rotted away inside. Unless I'm using the vehicle as a doner car, or completely stripping the interior, I'm not buying a smokers car. The smoke just permeates every part of that interior and is very hard to get out.

I’m not gonna say “if you can handle maintenance costs” because it’s not Mercedes level prices, but parts will still cost more than something like a Civic. I’d say that if you don’t mind that, then go for it. The 5 cylinder with a manual is pretty fun to drive, even if it isn’t an R model

Def! I regretted selling the 850 also and ran into the women I sold it to about 2yrs later and tried to buy it back from her lol.. I was young and didn't realize what I was getting rid of. Traded the 740 in on the 850 because I didn't wana spend $1200 to replace the turbo, and when I went to college the clutch on the 850 needed to be replaced soon and my school was in the mountains hrs away from any Volvo certified mechanic. At the time it made more sense to sell it and buy a 4wd Tahoe than spend $1000 on a new clutch which ended up being a HUGE mistake... still miss both of those cars! Both were white and fully optioned w/ leather, sunroof, heated heats even in the 740 and well taken care of

In other words "models produced before 2005 or so" 🤷. Seems like car brands are adopting the same strategy used by tech companies like apple (produce stuff that will start "showing its age" breaking more & more, forcing one to get a newer model from said brand 🤷. Bullshit stg 😬

Car companies practically are tech companies these days. Each year, more and more "tech" are pumped into the vehicle, replacing perfectly good mechanical linkage that lasts for decades, with unreliable, cheaply made, electric servos that have no mechanical backup. From brake boosters to PWS pumps, to even complete steering columns. They're all converting to electric versions that are controlled by the computer without a manual override. These days, you can't find a new vehicle without a giant iPad in the center console, used to run everything on the car. What's more, since the screen has multiple functions, simple controls like air conditioning fan speed are hidden inside a menu maze. All of these screens tell you to never use the screen while driving, while placing all the controls, you would usually blindly fumble for while driving, on the screen. New cars just make me want to pull my hair out. We've had solid designs for years. Test new designs on the track, then intorduce them into mass production. Don't introduce new designs on a mass-produced vehicle and make your customers be your beta-testers. They're all doing it these days. EVs just add another layer of madness to the mix. The situation will depress you if you think about it too hard.

I wish manufactures would stop with all the computer junk bells and whistles and get back to making cars like the 50's and 60's in all sizes. I don't need all that crap. I need reliable transportation. 4, 6 or 8 cylinder, roll up windows, heater, air, automatic or stick, comfortable interior not $3,000 of leather. Then we would have a $10,000 car everyone could afford and be happy. Labor cost where I live are $190 per hour. How about something I can work on myself? Hello anyone out there really see what the public needs or is it just me. The first US car was Oldsmobile and had a total of 453 parts total. Now we have 6,000 parts that no-one can fix which is about 4,000 more than we need. A car that will last 200,000 to 300,000 miles than throw it away and buy another $10,000 car is what I need.
