Let's make a decent fitting corset that looks great, gives a historical silhouette, but DOESN'T break the bank... because let's be honest, I don't need to drop a fortune on a corset I'm gonna wear a couple times a year!
I go through the whole process, first turning an underbust corset into a midbust, tweaking the pattern to fit, then making a few mock-ups, and finally making the real deal! In this video, I will be turning Aranea Black's IRIS corset (originally an underbust pattern) into a midbust corset for a delicious Edwardian silhouette! Rounding out the look will be several pairs of socks, because I still haven't had time to fully flesh out my historical padding (pun fully intended).

It's still sad to see that Aranea's patterns have been so useful for so many costumers but now she's removed all of her information and patterns and disappeared from the Internet completely. I hope things are going well for her, I've seen from her patreon supporters that she left rather suddenly with a goodbye statement. The corset turned out lovely btw!

this is all the more beautiful and heartbreaking knowing that aranea black worked so hard but got so overwhelmed and stressed, and i think partly because she lived close to the ukraine war, that she took down everything, I pray she finds peace somewhere and doesnt feel pressured to come back, looking back on it, she did constantly seem on edge in her videos which at the time I just interpreted as chaotic good raven law type energy. actually i remember she did in fact have a post on her website about converting underbust to a midbust/overbust, and you accomplished it very well!

Great result, as always! Love the colour, subtle yet pretty trim, criss-cross flossing & tip for marking straight grain on wide fabrics. Lovely start to my weekend, thanks! Good luck procuring a zipper foot for your machine. I managed for decades without one on my 1931 hand-cranked Singer, but now I use one very frequently on my recently upgraded(!) 1970s Bernina & it makes life so much easier. Well, sewing at least. Shouldn't overclaim the benefits of a zipper foot for other purposes, I suppose 😂

When I discovered this last year, it broke me! I follow her on IG and still see where she and I like similar posts. This encourages me she is still living and has access to Internet. I reached out to her asking if she needed financial support to help bring the website back for all of us who appreciate and adore her work. Sadly, she didn’t respond. My guess is her situation is a private matter. Pouring the energy, time, and resources into a situation no longer serving her seems to be the right decision for her. I’m forever flummoxed at the almighty algorithm introducing and heralding the efforts of some and ignoring the skills, knowledge, and talents of others.

Yes, @Boops, I'd agree that it feels like it's beyond a purely financial issue, and a deeper, more personal issue, which makes me so sad (although I'm glad to hear she's still around on the internet liking posts).

I ❤ you took extra steps which could help future you! 🎉🎉🎉 When we’re excited about a project, our first inclination is to zoom to the finish line and behold our growing skills. This approach frequently sends us into a sea of missed opportunities and major obstacles nearer the end of the project. The place I frequently abandon projects is in the space between initial impulse and the 3rd self imposed obstacle. Taking earlier and more frequent steps to help our future selves is really the gift of magic!

For anyone buying Shannon's ham kit, as a personal suggestion, and if you can, try to use wool as a stuffing for the pin cushion. It is far easier to use when it's wool instead of poly fill which I found seems to have an odd bounce factor making it harder to pin your pins, and it has been said that the lanolin in the wool fiber will prevent your needles from rusting. It's a fantastic kit and 10/10 highly recommend!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Kiera!! 🫶🫶 Love that tip on the wool! Also, I filled mine with sawdust (which I got for free from a local carpenter, most are happy to give away their sawdust), and that works super well too, and might be more easily accessible to some than wool!

@@kieraoona ooh yes, definitely! I got similar sized sawdust (very coarse, and similar size to pet bedding), and I definitely have used mine so much that it's due for a repacking! Fortunately I have a lot of fine sawdust saved from my sewing table build that I can use to top it up!

FWIW, I was advised that wool is best for pincushions because the natural lanolin keeps pins and needles smooth and "lubricated". I use old dryer balls.

I love the dusty purple colour. Yep I am a purple gal at heart 😹😹the flossing was just perfect. It has given you a really nice shape(can not spell the other word😿)once you have made the padding for them it will look perfect. It’s a shame about the website for the corsets just vanishing like that. It’s not the first time a website has up and vanished and I’m sure it will not be the last. I think that with all the corset patterns I have now collected over the past few years I will manage to make something that will be perfect for me, I have had my fabric for years now just as well I bought more than what is needed as it’s now out of production(bought it 25 years ago found the docket in with it😹😹😹 not sure what was more shocking the age of the fabric or the cost of it compared to todays prices🙀🙀thankfully even back then I had stopped buying manmade fibers.

I actually do have a couple of corsets in the works at the moment, one of them *attempting* historical accuracy (cream-colored silk-satin with lace and peridot green ribbon and flossing) and another more "everyday" corset using quilting cotton for the outer layer that is still kind of on hold because I can't decide which pattern fabric from my stash of quilting cotton remnants and squares I should use. 😂 It's soooooo tempting to just make a whole bunch of corsets, but buying that many busks is definitely going to add up fast!

The cute wisps are the results of not having cut my hair for over four years, and letting it just rip out naturally how it wants to? Seriously, my hair care routine is probably appalling to the vast majority of my viewers 🤣🤣

Great work! Thank you for sharing the process. I love the colours! My dream corset would be a muted forest/dark green with off-white/cream lace :) but I don't even have any corset yet and I'm very far behind with my plans of making one, so maybe in the next 10 years? :'D when I finally get around making one, it will probably be a very similar shape as this :)

I love love love this! I have been wanting to make a corset for YEARS and you make it look so easy! Does it add any size to your waist? I bought an already-made and it adds a full inch which makes the whole idea seem pointless since i want it to make my waist smaller. (I have the extra squish on my waist to achieve this. Lol)
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
I haven't measured my waist in it, so I can't definitely say... I'd imagine that it's about the same or a bit larger, because as I mentioned, I have zero squish or room for squishage skeletally-speaking. If you were squishy, I would make an educated guess that you could could get *some* reduction (see Minji Lee, she has a great skeletal structure that leads to squishage), but also remember that the historical silhouette relied just as much on padding out as it did on squishing in!

Anyway if you have a PO Box or a care of address let us know.

Thank you, that's so generous of you! I don't know if it's a tricky foot to find, it IS a older machine. It's a PFAFF 1212 (or 1222, they're pretty interchangeable)... so it's high shank, but there's more than than, because while the shaft height was fine on the foot I found, the placement of the needle hole front-to-back was incorrect, and my needle would strike the foot 😭😭 So the (half-hearted) search continues!

"I am notoriously hard to give a waistline to" ohhhhh I feel that in my very soul.... I think I have a similar athletic build to you, only mine's got some, ehrm, extra padding as well to further obscure any hip to waist ratio I might ever have had... Do you ever get annoyed ribs from the waist of the corset? I'm guessing your hip bones and rib bones aren't too far apart from each other and you've got a fair bit of muscle in between from the core muscles you must have in order to be able to do all the things you do (I made mine strong to hold my spine together and the bonus bulk of the muscle increase has made me look even more like a brick with boobs). I made a half-corset sports bra last year and it's in the UFO pile for ticking off my ribcage even after I opened up the back seam (I made a zipper front, solid back) at the bottom for an extra inch, I'm going to have to go in and let it out at the sides, or maybe adjust where the bones are so they don't press on my floating ribs. I might split the back and put lacing in but I suspect the result of that is going to be my shoulder straps falling off because my slopey shoulders tend to lose any kind of strap that doesn't come from the centre of my back (yeah expanding bras that fit my front to also fit my kinda muscular ribcage by adding to the back does exactly this by moving the back straps further apart from each other, I wanna be a 36 in the front for cup placement but a 40 in the back for the hammering and swordwork muscles across my shoulders and back). UGH, BODIES. And I think I might try the welt method next time I try to make something structured, so far my two structural garments have been bag-lined and I'm not as happy wtih how the boning channels worked out on the one I boned and the other one's in the "UFO" pile for now while I contemplate how to add boning to it, given that I do not have a thread that matches the fashion fabric. I'm pretty good at hiding that I'm using the wrong colour thread, but not THAT good LOL. I have my suspicions that when I do finally make a full corset, I'm going to be referring back to this video. Since I made my first attempt, I ALWAYS use the waist line as my reference for pinning stuff together, I'll have to figure out how to add other marks since my measurements often lie. Though for this kind of garment, socks just may be the solution to the "But I measured you silly boobs at 40" and made the thing to 40" with zero ease, why can I stick both hands in there with you now??" issue. Mariah Pattie has a good video on making crescent shaped bust improvers to prevent things from... slithering ... down your corset or stays... and I have no hips to speak of so I'll definitely be contemplating my sock collection or making fake hips. Some "BADöNKA" to go with the "üPLIFTA", if you will... Looks great, that colour works way better on you than it would on me, I need the deep jewel tones or I look ill. Fortunately for my wearable corset mockup future, I have some dark purple canvas!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
Definitely recommend the welt method, I find it very easy and fairly forgiving, plus you save some time on sewing the boning channels! Definitely feel free to refer back to the video for any useful tips, and I'll definitely be needing my own üPLIFTA in the future too! XD

Can I send you a zipper foot? I have quite a few vintage machines and often they've come with various feet and other doodads.... and I don't need multiple zipper feet! (Although now that I really look closely at your machine, it looks like it takes a very specific style of foot....)
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
That's a very sweet offer, but I'm afraid it might be pretty specific... the store gave me a high shank foot that was the proper height, but the placement of the needle hole front to back was off because the shaft is slanted, and I wouldn't want to you to the time and effort of sending me a foot only to have it not work 😭🫶

What keeps the breast in a mid-bust Corset? I have bras that I have given up on wearing; because, my breast spills over the top of the cups when I bend over (they really do pour over and out of the bra cups). This is very embarrassing, and very painful. To wear any of these modern support bras, I have to wear a full coverage sorts bra over my support bras. Dressing up is painful and hot. Corsets may be a safer, cooler and more comfortable choice.
@Judoka26
@Judoka26 Жыл бұрын
With underbust-Corsets a bralette or similar is worn to support the bust. Not really what I want for my self for daily corset wearing which is why I made myself a mid-bust corset. There is no spillig really because the bust is kept inside with the chemise (or undershirt). And mid-bust really is over the nippels, so quite safe. When bendig over the bust is retained by the chemise as well. Hope that helps 😊

@@ShannonMakes steam and stretch. On a welt seam you can trim a little of the seam away, so it is contained inside the bone channel rather than anchoring it with the second row of stitching. This also allows the seam fabric to move to where it wants to be. As with many things it's easier to show than describe I'm afraid.
