Hydronic heaters, Engine pre-heaters. I plan to install a engine pre-heater and this is how I got the unit up and running in my Ford Transit self build camper van. To keep my engine warm in arctic winter
This video how me getting two Webasto Thermo Top V heaters up and running ( different from the Webasto Thermo Top Z C/D but with the same purpose. )
These heaters are factory installed on a number of different car models my two are from a Land Rover discovery 3 ( eBay £27 ) and a Land Rover discovery 4 ( eBay 99p ), additionally The 0.40 webasto fuel pump from a discovery from eBay for £26 ( different from the 0.22 pumps used on Chinese Diesel air heaters.
These heaters are not as simple as just a 12v signal to start ( apart from Rover 75 models of the Thermo Top Z ), Most need a 'W-Bus" Signal which is part of their communications protocol. This signal can come from an original webasto controller or In my case a third party W-Bus adapter.
At the time of posting I can no longer find the original W-Bus Adapter I used.
Here is a link to an alternative that I have not personally tested but appears a popular option.
W-Bus adapter - ebay.us/ZsHciR
Sell new plugs and terminals for this style of heater
fnltd.co.uk/shop/
Sell spare parts for this type of heater however they are original and can be expensive.
www.butlertech...
Models to avoid are the ones from VW vehicles, as they use a different type of communication protocol to start.
These heaters could be used for a Hydronic heating system, Engine preheater or more. They could be used to heat hot water or underfloor heating or even air heating for a campervan.

I've watched these two Engine Preheater videos so many times!! My partner and I live in our 2012 4WD Ford Transit full time, and we are setting off for 5 months in the French Alps in November. I've been procrastinating a lot due to not being confident about how it all works, BUT yesterday I jumped on eBay and bought a Thermo Top V from a landrover 3, and the W-Bus comms device! Going to give it a go and attempt this engine preheater install! Thanks so much for making these videos, i'm following them as a guide for my own install and probably couldn't do it without them!!

@@MispronouncedAdventures thought I should come back and mention that after putting this project aside for a bit, I have been working on the heater for the last week or so and today finally got it all fired up and working really nicely on my test bench! Had it circulating 5l of water and almost melted the plastic bottle I was using as a reservoir! Still come fun challenges in getting it installed in the van, but when she finally fired up and spat a big cloud of smoke out I said WOO HOOOO! Thanks again Alex.

I can imagine this would be more efficient then leaving the engine idling to defrost the car/van since the heater is actually designed to transfer heat into the coolant, where as your engine is designed to produce power from the fuel, and about 65% of the heat leaves through the exhaust while only 5-8% is absorbed into the coolant, the other 27-30% is turned into motion, although I can imagine at idle the thermal efficiency of an engine isn't 27-30% (the amount of energy turned into motion)
@MispronouncedAdventures

This more or less that’s the main reason for the units. To heat coolant faster for the cabin blower. I however use it for other option which is heating the engine for cold weather

I fitted one to my old smilly face transit.. preheated the engine very well, had a water matrix in the rear of the van as well, so it heated the hot water tank.. Plus I put a temp sensor in the one hose and it turned the heater fan on in the dash board so it de-misted-de-iced the windscreen.. when running right, they are one of the best heating systems you can have I think.. cracking job bud

@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a simple concept but can be a little bit more difficult to implement. Pretty much the heater is designed to heat the coolant running through the engine, heating that coolant in turn heats up the engine block. Same principle applies for the floor. You would heat the coolant pipes running through the floor you installed and that in turn would the heat up the floor itself. Implementing it will be a bit more difficult as it will need maybe additional pumps and Valves so you can turn it on and off. I would recommend checking out “freedom strider” Channel because that is exactly what they have done with there’s

FORD parts. #1804871 - which was the right angle quick connect coolant hose fitting for connecting the cabin heater loop to the heater via a normal coolant point. #2073202 - is a normal heater matrix connector with two sides ( I only use one side) which allows me to connect a generic coolant hose to a quick connect coolant fitting to join the heater back to the coolant loop

It’s probably not locked to the Land Rover wiring, the Land Rover wring still communicated via the W-bus one way or another However, the issue may have come across as you’re locked out of the heater due to a number of failed starts or fault, needs to be reset via the Webasto diagnostic software. Wow…. I paid serious $$$$ for a new Esbacher hydronic heater system. Did you say those were from junked vehicles? How would you set that system up to heat the hot water in your recirculating shower? Would you use a mixer valve after the glycol heat exchanger? What cool water would you cool/temper that water with in a closed loop recirculating shower?
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Your unit whilst costing more will have a warranty! Yeah from scrapped / junked cars. Seems there pretty common I think putting it into a recirculating shower would be reasonably simple. Two variations I can think of. Using a plated heat exchanger so the heater can heat its own coolant loop and then transfer the energy into the heat exchanger which is cycling through a hot water tank, for the same principle but the heat exchanger is inline with the showerhead for direct heating ( with mixer ) and no hot tank needed

@MispronouncedAdventures

Definitely could do, quite a few people use hydronic heating systems for their hot water. It wouldn’t even need to be the spare unit. I could just add a plated heat exchanger to the existing one loop for the engine ( which I have thought about, but the logistics of that coolant pipe routing, make it near impossible with the van already built ) However, for me, the diesel heater is on most evenings and overnight in the winter when I’m gonna be wanting to make hot water for the shower

Ok this is amazing, but I have questions. I have a B6 Passat Estate, could I install it? Can I install it to just heat the car up for car camping? Rather then the car and the engine as that would use more fuel, I’d rather have the option to heat the car or car and engine or just engine, could that be done? How does it know when the cars heater core is hot enough? I wouldn’t want it boiling the water or anything or causing damage. Could I hand a second tank rather then a spear wheel so it could run on red? How hard is it to install a second battery in the boot so it could run longer for car camping? I know time I’d money I’m more the happy to PayPal you for helping me. I can’t afford my flat anymore, so I think I’m going to live in the car for a few months to save up the deposit to move out, as my flat is falling apart and my landlord is crap

Hey, you definitely can set it up to turn the cars cabin fans on to heat up. They normally used to do that. Heating the cab and engine before starting in cold weather. However I might be easier and cheaper for you to by a Cheap Chinese 2wk diesel air heater and install that with a separate battery. More heat and less fuel used. It would be no issue using a small second tank.

In part 2 you said they cut off and 80c so they don’t just boil it and with what you said about the cars thermostat and with not having much room in just an Estate and not wanting to cut into it much, I thought a coolant one would be best. I was able to find a genuine VW one that’s actually for my B6 Passat for £50, and the plugs ain’t broke. Think I’ll just do what you did and wire it in separately, I don’t think it’ll be to easily coding and buying lots of control modules. It just needs to do me 4 months till I get some money together. @@MispronouncedAdventures Thanks very much. So if I use a 7 day timer, so long as it has 12v going to the relay, when it ‘Switches’ the 12v coming out should be fine. Very little current and the relay is good for up to 16 Amps

You could it in anything with a coolant loop. Not sure why you would want to in a Nissan leaf being an EV. I didn’t think leaf batteries had an integrated coolant loop like some other EV
