In this month's edition of Tech of the Month, Jack Luke talks us through a fancy wireless power washer from Bosch 💦 poop-free water bottles from Elite 💩 Suntour's cheap(ish) gravel suspension fork ↕️ Hunt's cheapest rim brake wheelset 🏹 and some fresh new road cycling kicks from Addidas 👠
Tech of the Month is our series where we show you - our beloved, beautiful and dedicated KZfaq audience - the shiniest, most interesting and most drool-worthy kit to land at BikeRadar HQ... or, in these strange times, the various living rooms of the BikeRadar staff.
What kit did you like from this month's episode? Or perhaps the sight of a gravel suspension fork made your blood boil? Did the enormous collar on Jack's 1970s shirt distract you? As always, let us know any thoughts, questions or feedback in the comments!
(🎤 Ps, Jack says sorry about the echoey audio - he's a wordsmith, not an audio whizz, and promises it'll be better next time 🎤)

Does suspension have any place on a gravel bike? 🤔 Do you like the Adidas shoes? 👠 Do you want to know the name of Jack's seal cushion? 🌊 Do you prefer to drink from a bottle encrusted with mud? ☘️ Let us know in the comments below!

My n=1/gravel bike runs a lauf fork yes it screwed up the geometry from the manufacturers table. Sizing up the frame with original geometry that has low bottom bracket and short chainstays then fitting a short stem I have ended up with a really playful machine that is efficient on the road, a hoot when you take it off road and doesn't have messed up handling.

Each to their own? Personally I think that by the time your ride needs suspension you might want to consider an xc bike (I like gravel rides on fast gravel/bridleways, not a man for the rough stuff). Others will want the comfort offered by the small amount of travel and find an XC bike to be overkill. The muddy bottle problem (for me) was solved with a camelback, freeing the space in the frame.

Suspension on a gravel bike seems a bit too niche even in todays strange times. Just buy an xc bike or buy a touring bike in the first place, instead of bastardising your poor gravel bike. Also loving the sartorial aesthetic Jack.

You guys should compare that pressure washer to the Worx Hydroshot. Hydroshot is all handheld and feeds from a hose into any water source, like a bucket or hose or even water bottle. I'm not sure how long battery lasts but I've considered one. Luckily now I just have a convenient hose.

We actually have a review of the Hydroshot on site: www.bikeradar.com/reviews/maintenance/cleaning-products/bike-cleaning/worx-hydroshot-wg630e-1-pressure-washer-review/ If we get a few more in, we may do a test between a few!

I think the Worx Hydroshot is a better buy than the Bosh. It's more powerful and around half the price. Also does an okay job for the car if you use the foam attachment while sponging off the dirt, after an initial rinse.

In 6 months they will introduce gravel handlebars, just like the ones on MTBs, but not as wide. Than even more gravel oriented geometry, just like the one on MTBs but slightly less aggressive. Than gravel rear suspension, 60mm at first, followed by 100 and 120mm versions, all incomparable with last year frames. Than come wider even more gravel oriented handlebars. An in few years they will introduce the ultimate gravel bike. The XC MTB! And everybody will be buying the cool new XC MTBs, the ultimate gravel\do everything bicyles😂. The whole gravel bike thing is such a ponzi cheme.

Gravel forks are certainly interesting. I think suspension forks are mainly useful for maintaining front wheel traction, at which point you're probably riding fairly technical terrain, and a cross-country mountain bike starts to make more sense. That being said, there is certainly a place for gravel/XC hybrid bikes, but the flat-bar diverge and cannondale topstone are the only real entries into the genre from major manufactures so far.
@TomMarvin1
@TomMarvin1 3 жыл бұрын
IME the gravel suspension forks work just as well for maintaining comfort on long, kinda rough, but not MTB rough rides.
@onebackzach
@onebackzach 3 жыл бұрын
@@TomMarvin1 That's a fair point. I imagine there are a certain number of people who get hand cramps while gravel riding, and it could certainly help. I find that thick bar tape and changing hand positions occasionally is enough for me. I guess I'm mostly looking at it through the lens of maximum efficiency, which isn't true for everyone.

I'd appreciate some help from the wise community please: why would a suspension fork void the warranty? surely suspension would reduce kinetic energy being transferred to the frame and reduce the chance of frame damage. Please fill the gap in my knowledge.
@christianditchburn4022
@christianditchburn4022 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is that the extra length of the fork will cause all of the angles on the bike to slacken changing the way that both lateral and vertical forces are transferred into the frame. It’s the same reason that MTB brands will design their hardtails around a particular fork length/travel and can void your warranty if you ‘over fork’ your frame. The extra length in the fork can also act as a longer lever on the head tube increasing the stress on the lower welds of the headtube even riding on perfectly flat and smooth terrain

I think for off road a gravel bike is fine although probably restricted with some terrain, if you already have a MTB then what’s the point of having a gravel bike unless of course money is no option and you have the space, I have my carbon road and MTB, and my old road as a winter bike,I know someone who got a gravel and goes on minor rough tracks and I think why did you pay all that money to do something you could do on a bike you already have, I’ve already slagged him off for it, give some cash to charity if you have it, it’s a case of let’s be trendy and give money to the bike companies who lets face it are lapping it up.
