Whats more fun than a Cheap Jeep Challenge? How about one called the "Pull-A-Part Cheap Jeep Challenge, BleepinJeep VS Busted Knuckle brought to you by Tekton Tools"? Heck ya that sounds way better! In this 4 part series (4 parts each, 8 episodes total) Busted Knuckle Films and I will be acquiring a Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and a Jeep Cherokee XJ. We both have $5,000 to spend total and that includes the purchase price of the vehicle. We also must outfit the Jeeps for safety and have a $500 budget allotted for safety gear. The first competition will be a stock challenge where BleepinJeep goes head to head with Busted Knuckle in our safety only modified Jeeps. After that we go back to the drawing board and can use our remaining budget to outfit the Jeeps any way we see fit up to a 35" tire for round two. It is allowed to sell parts off the jeeps to add to our cheap jeep budget but we cant use sponsored items or freebie parts unless we account for the cost of those items and take it out of the total. Our Judges for round 1 are Ian Johnson of Big Tire Garage, Ricky Berry from RCV Performance Products, and Eric Hagan a Downhill Dirt Bike Guru. A huge thanks for Pull-A-Part Used Auto Parts and Tekton Tools for making this possible!!

That rear axle was setup for a TJ that is why the brackets didn't line up as you found out. A TJ rear axle isn't a direct swap into a ZJ, the coil spring perches and control arm bolt in locations are completley different.

What you can do when welding parts like a driveshaft that are too large to clamp is grab one of those hood or engine ground straps from Pull a Part (or from your own vehicle). Generally they're a woven copper strip that is fairly long. Then loop it around your driveshaft, rollcage, etc. and clamp onto that with your ground clamp. Makes it real easy to clamp onto big or awkward parts and provides a good ground. Alternatively you can strip the sheathing from some large extension cables and wrap all the copper strands together, but that's more messy and destructive.

Hey Matt. I have learned that if you clamp the spring directly across from the spot where you are heating it, it bends a little better. And if you dunk it in a bucket of oil while it is still hot, it will help to be temper the steel. The same as is done with making tools. Just be careful with the hot oil not to hurt your self or catch anything on fire. I recommend doing it outside in a safe place.

ALWAYS STAND A TIRE UP WHEN FILLING WITH AIR, SEATING A BEAD, ADDING AIR OR ANY AIRING OF ANY KIND. The sidewall and/or bead always blows first if a failure occurs and very rarely does the tread blow on inflation. Therefore if a failure is in the tires future and your sitting on the floor with it on its side ( like bleeping here( even with a BL wheel) it will become an instant anti gravity rocket and you or HEED are just in the way.

@Fix_It_Again_Tony
@Fix_It_Again_Tony 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the springs were the sketchiest part to me. He mentioned it quickly in the video, but for anyone that didn't catch it spring steel gets heat treated to make it what it is so when you heat it up to glowing red hot a section of that spring has lost its heat treatment. It will be prone to breaking in this area. I agree it's fine for a trailered off road only build if you absolutely can't afford the proper springs, but for most people they should buy the correct springs and then they will also get the correct rate. He said the ones he used in the rear were front springs originally (stiffer). Not only does that affect the ride quality, but will affect articulation and can affect stability. It'll get you out on the trail, but save up a little money for the correct springs.

Great video series. I've been looking for something to beat up on a little but still crawl like our jku on 37's just cheaper haha. .. soo I bought a Zj or 2 😬 5.2 v8 should be a fun build for our channel thanks for the inspiration Matt.

The ZJ is the best vehicle ever made. The best part is that you didn't cut the fenders, which is usually so ugly. I wish you'd make a build list in ASCII format and lengths of the control arms.

Ok, I was wrong, you cut the fenders, just not sure exactly how much was cut and where...

I was always under the impression you should take caster angle after zero'ing angle finder on the sill, not a workbench. Good video though!
