*8.17.2020 UPDATE*
I am revising the instructions shown in the video as follows:
1) You can use a 2-port oil catch can (OCC); 3-port is NOT necessary nor needed.
2) Run valve cover PCV out to OCC in
3) Run OCC out to the original Intake Manifold PCV in port (near throttle body)
4) Use the plug that came with the kit (the clear tube that I used made it stinky)
5) Run the Bank 2 (passenger side) crankcase port line to the intake tube (in other words, don't mess with Bank 2 at all)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On this episode I install a $18* 3-port oil catch can off Amazon in my LEXUS GS400. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE for more great upcoming episodes!
*Total cost as shown was about $32 USD (I had some of the optional parts already, otherwise it would have been closer to $40).
TOOLS
Ratchet
10mm socket
Screwdrivers
Cutter for braided hose
Small allen wrench
Drill
Drill bit
*SUPPLIES
YL Inc. Universal Aluminum Baffled 3-Port Oil Catch Can, Tank, Air-Oil Separator 2 Inlets 1 Outlet ($18, Amazon) *NOTE: I NOW RECOMMEND GOING WITH A 2-PORT OCC, SEE UPDATE AT TOP*

I pulled the Intake Manifold on my GS400 last month to replace the lower IM gaskets. While the IM was off, I cleaned the AVIS butterfly valves and the runners. There must have been a half quart of oil coating every surface. Just above the intake ports, the oil had cooked into a rough black coating. This is a very worthy mod if you value clean, laminar flow through your IM. Great video Christian!

Today is 11/08/20, Learned something new just by surfing KZfaq. I didn't even know an OCC product existed till I saw another video about it last night. I ran into clogged orifices in the intake manifold on my Honda giving me a check engine light, from research found that it's a common problem, according to Eric the car guy and other videos showing how to clean it. I think an OCC will help this common problem. Thanks for the video, you gave me ideas on the install, I also reviewed the comments and found the answer to your problem about the smell.

I have the same catch can on my G35X. I have it set up bank 1 side pcv to OCC inlet. Bank 2 hose routed from back of valve cover behind the engine to OCC. Plugged the inlet to the intake tube, then the outlet to the OCC goes back to the lower plenum. I haven't had any issues so far. Some guys run a closed system on the bank 1 side, then vent to atmosphere on the bank 2 side. So far, so good for me.

Nice video. I have the same type of can but without the drain plug. I have mine hooked up like yours except I am using only one inlet and the other is plugged. These catch cans are similar in design to JLT's catch cans. It is interesting to note that the instructions for the JLT cans have the PVC lines hooked up the opposite. The line coming from the PVC goes to the filter inlet. The line coming out of the catch can, going to the carb in my case, is the line with no filter. The theory is the in coming blow by is slowed by the filter and the oil separates dripping down into the can. The cleaned up air than goes out the open hole in the top of the can out to the carb. I have not tried JLT's set up yet to see if more oil is caught, but plan to see if it does catch more oil than the reverse set up.

Bad smell is probably due to oil leaks. As I know, that bronz filter make a considerable restrictions to airflow, which results to increase the crank case pressure and leak engine oil from seals.

Another awesome video about GS!) You would need to use some rubber for those bolts on ECU cover to seal it properly (you don`t need any moisture inside that box mate)) It smells bad because of that mix of condensate+dusty oil inside of the can, maybe check the sealing of the can tank (I can see some moisture outside the tank, so maybe that`s why you got this problem) Anyway you did a great job and I`m looking forward to the video about those pulleys!) By the way, just finished manual swap on my GS400 - got 15mpg instead of 10 xD

Thanks for creating the video. Is it possible the smell is created by the type of catch can? I have noticed the bronze filter used could be too restricted so the crankcase pressure can be built up and the waste gas can push out from the dipstick anywhere it can?

I would've stuck with the 1/2"" the hose for catch cans should be slightly bigger to overcome the additional pressure that the added length of hose adds to your system. I tested the pressure because I already have a leak just about starting at my rear main seal and I didn't want to add even a half a psi. I ran 5/8" ID and that matched the pressure at high RPM. On a corala, sure, go with 3/8 but for a performance car go 1/2". I have a 6.2L big block and chose 5/8". If you don't have a pressure gauge you can use a Ballon to check how much posative pressure you have. You do NOT want to add pressure or you will blow out seals, spray you bay w oil, pop your dip stick out, damage your engine etc. These are not zero risk as everyone likes to think. If you're unsure then use the vent with your kit. The vent vents OUT pressure it's not an intake like some people think.

Hi mate! Very good input about the overpressure issue! I'm right now planning a catch can install and my biggest concern is precisely that to prevent oil seal failures (my car model is very prone to oil seepage past seals, even being a N/A engine). May you help me with two questions? How much pressure avg. did you register with the pressure gauge? (I was about to buy one but wasn't sure whether stay in the low miliBar or grams/m² scale or hop up to a higher order of measurement). It may be related in any ways to the oil pressure itself? Also did you consider to throw in a pressure relief valve, or at least a check valve prior to atmosphere vent? In my case, for not allowing air enter back past the MAF sensor (thus creating a vacuum leak) while letting crankcase de-pressurization over a certain level of blowby Evidently we must know how much pressure builds up to select the correct pressure relief valve) Thanks in advance!

I'm curious if the intake manifold could just have a plug on it. I know the crank case needs to be ventilated so it would need a hose going to a catch can. What if you just plugged the intake? I imagine it's illegal but I was just wondering from a functional stand point. If catch cans catch 80-90% of the gunk, having the intake plugged would prevent ANY sludge from going in there. Just kind of thinking out loud.

Why would it smell, it's a closed loop system? Also, why would you route to the intake before the throttle body and not to the point aft of the throttle body on the manifold? I think the other bank's line is not a vent, but a source of filtered air to draw air into the passenger bank which flows through to the driver's side back to be drawn into the manifold. All PCV systems route to the manifold to have higher vacuum to evacuate the blow by gases. Could that be why your car stinks? Note: I tried a DIY catch can with stainless steel wool and a plastic container. It worked for a while, no smells, but the plastic couldn't hold up to the heat and cracked. I would considering replacing it with the one you used in the video, but a single input can for my Honda 4-cyl.

If you ran a bracket from the firewall to the brace in a triangular shape you will notice it will stiffen things up even better and respond quicker when you turn the steering wheel. As you mentioned the bad smell I was immediately thinking the non oil/fuel-resistant tubing you used for the drain as the culprit. Seems that was the case. I also use a similar Mishimoto chinese copy (2 ports) on my 2ZR FXE engine in my Toyota hybrid. Beware of the supplied O-rings with the kit, none of them is oil resistant NBR. When I first discharged the can I found O-rings were soft, enlarged and curly so I immediately replaced them for real NBR. Is one of the three hoses on your catch-can connected to the breather filter side of the V-ENGINE, which is the hose that runs to the air-cleaner box? Cause maybe that is what I should've done on my Dodge V8; Instead of the catch can with only IN and OUT and connected only on the PCV side, between the PCV valve and the plenum. A question I have Is: How would oil get into the air-cleaner box if the air travels from the air cleaner to the breather to the valve cover, can the oil go in the opposite direction to the airflow and get past the breather filter?
@ForwardMomentum

I over-complicated mine initially. It’s simple to me now. Bank 2 goes to the intake tube (aka “fresh air”). Bank 1 has PCV and it goes to OCC IN. OCC out goes to intake manifold. Done. @@ForwardMomentum yeah, I have a ADD W1 V3 can (not the V3.3) on a Ford cyclone engine. It's plumbed from the P/S bank only and when I realized the D/S side was plumbed into the intake before the throttle, it left me scratching my head. So after some forum reads, it was suggested that I split my catch tank's ports with a Y connecter. ~A Y connecter for the inlet for both engine banks ~A Y connecter for post and before throttle (with check valves). Does that sound about right, you think?

Sucks, I ordered my pulley kit around Valentine’s Day and still haven’t received my fifth one. Also I had figment issues with the tensioner pulley and haven’t been able to install it. I contacted XAT and told them my issue and they offered to send me a “spacer” which I find kind of ghetto. Been waiting for the spacer for about two weeks now and haven’t received it in the mail. It really makes me want to warn everyone in the 1uz community about them. I don’t really see myself ordering from them again tbh.

@ForwardMomentum

Generally speaking, that’s true. However, much of it is design based blow-by. Meaning, the engineers knew and anticipated oil vapor blow-by under certain scenarios but concluded that an OCC would not be a worthwhile maintenance item for most owners. They also concluded it would not adversely affect engine performance or longevity, but many of us simply don’t want that crap in there. That being said, when I took the intake manifold off for my supercharger install, I got to see 150K miles-worth of oil vapor in the intake ports (OCC has been on for 20K miles). It was significant. And now, at 7psi, of boost there’s certainly more blow-by, making the OCC even more valuable. 👍

I use 1" ID line in and out also that dress screen is too restrictive and will increase the pressure in the crankcase SS pot scrubby is much better. But you really need a much bigger can with a much better baffling system. On this one the CCV or Blowby just goes in and straight out. You can do better even with a DIY system. It's not rocket science.

I'm totally against this because don't you need some type of lubricant on your valve seals? Wouldn't that be the main reason they have gone and they're also part of the design
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum 14 күн бұрын
Valve stem seals are designed to allow a small amount of oil to trickle down and lubricate from the top end of the engine. The PCV system and return is intended to capture (and burn off) that hot oil condensed mist. All we’re doing is collecting that mist, then emptying it, in order to keep it out of our intake tracts. Now that my car is supercharged, it’s even more beneficial to have this in place.

I don’t know what vehicle you have, but you want the vacuum source between the MAF and TB typically, so the intake pipe is usually easiest. That goes to my bank 2 valve cover. I don’t give a rip about that. What I care about is all the oil that coats the intake runners and fuel injectors over the years. After pulling my intake manifold off for my supercharger, I can assure you the oil build up is significant after 170K miles. If I can minimize it for $20, I’m all for it.

Botched install, that is not how you install a catch can, you deleted your pvc system basically by capping off that fitting , that has vacuum at all times, the one you ran it to only have slight vacuum when the throttle blades are cracked , you doing more harm them good by running it like that, you have nothing evacuating the crankcase under certain condition, considering your not pulling vacuum from behind the throttle blades as it should be
