If you use the drawknife bevel down, you’ll get more control. The flat side will cut flat surfaces well, the back side allows you to do curves, lighter cuts. It won’t dive into the timber as much with bevel down. Hope this helps.

Hi Sam. Thanks for the review. The Beavercraft line is manufactured in the Ukraine. It appears that they produced a product similar, but larger than the Morakniv splitting knife which also has some flexibility, but has two bevels instead of a single bevel. While the Mora can do some limited drawknife work, its original intention was to perform some minor splitting, primarily in small sections of softwood. The single bevel and general design of the Beavercraft knife indicates that it is intended to do traditional light drawknife type work similar to the work you were attempting on the spoon handle. It should not be used for splitting. Putting a razor edge on it, taking light shvings, and skewing the blade should help with the cutting. The knife can be used bevel-up when doing straight cuts, bevel down when doing scooping concave cuts, or any way that facilitates the cutting action. As an owner of over one hundred drawknives, it appears to me that the Beavercraft drawknife is best suited for light work and can be supplimented with a shaving horse, shaving pony, or a rope based spoon "vise". Beavercraft seems to gearing their entire product line towards the recent trend towards green woodworking/bushcraft carving.

Awesome tips! I've not used this drawknife but a few other times since this video, but do like it still. I totally agree that it's geared toward green wood carving, it did great on some beech from an outing in the woods a few weeks back.

Hi, I have a quick question. As a starter in green woodwork im searching for a good quality drawknife for a reasonable price. I looked into ben orford for example but its way to expensive for me as a starter. I looked at svante djarv also but since you own a lot of drawknifes, do you have any suggestions? Kind regards!

Hey Sam, Use the draw knife to shave the wood, as you pull the knife towards you move it a little left to right as you pull. Try it you'll like it !

im new at wood carving and your videos have been the most helpful to me. while i do enjoy watching professional carvers, they dont ever really show things that can go wrong. i really hope you dont take this the wrong way, but seeing things you come across to slow the process down is probably the best thing you can show for newcomers. i appreciate you and your videos. keep em coming, youve got a sub from me

Nice find on a small draw knife. Sharpening will make a big difference. BTY, Nothing wrong with the vise. glue sandpaper on the vise faces and it will triple the holding power of the vise. a vise doesn't have to be expensive to hold good. You might be interested in watching my video series on "OTB vise". just do a search on that phrase on my channel to find them.

I agree using the draw knife too split the wood, wasn't a good idea. Thankfully you were able to remove it, with out damage. Looking forward to more videos of you using this tool Blessings to you and your family

I have a draw knife, never used it, and knows nothing about it either. I wonder how sharp it needs to be. I have been looking for a "spoke-shave" and information on getting and using both.

Nicely done Sam 😁👍. Looks like I need to add one to my toolbox, or just to hang it on the wall... it just looks so.... "tooley" 😁. Love the wood / metal and leather combo, worth getting one... just to smell it (that sounds a bit weird but you know what I mean). Nice impromptu drop test... must try that with my new router 😂🤣. Thanks for the vid Sam 😁👍

A Draw knife is for drawing the shaving toward you hence the name, pushing the blade will dig in instead of shave, It is not a tool designed for pushing. it is not for splitting either, for splitting you need a Froe or Shake axe. Only use a tool for what it is designed for. And if you use the right tool and use it correctly the tool will do the work for you instead of you fighting the tool. Otherwise you risk damaging the tool, workpiece or even yourself.`

Easy math; 2 handles at 3.75" = 7.5" + 4.25" for the cutting blade = 11.75", not 12.75.

Just use a smaller hammer and keep tapping it all the way through… Be patient and keep tapping… repetition will drive it through… If you don’t hurry and do it slow and carefully you can split that wood with that knife.😀😀

To do a review you might need another draw blade to compare it to. From this side of the camera the handles looked too narrow for your hands. Your tests seemed to suggest you have no experience with a draw knife [I could be wrong]. To learn you might want to make a dozen sample 2 x 2 boards of a wide variety of woods, find a way to clamp that is secure, potentially line your clamp system with leather or something that will not damage the wood and have a planned shape that you carve to match using calipers. If you did this kind of practice you will likely be a lay expert by the time you are done and if you have a second draw knife you will be able to make real comparisons on how each works.

You call it a draw knife and the first thing you do is use it as a push knife. I'm looking at the Mora push knife and was intrested in seeing how this one was.

Shouldn't it have a bevel.........in my mind a bevel would make it draw through the wood more smoothly........I'm not sure but it would be awesome to know in case i decided to ever make one ; )

I don't think placing your thumb in the middle of the knife and pulling towards you was such a good idea. Don't do it. The supplied bandaids won't cover it.
