I drive a cab in Portland. I picked up Rick one day and took him on a short ride across the river into downtown, I didn’t recognize him at first (he’s older and bigger now). We were chatting and he told me his band was playing at the Zoo that night, I said “oh,yeah”? …. What’s your band’s name? He says, Cheap Trick… I almost wrecked my fuggin cab. I told him I was a long time fan and apologized for not recognizing him. He gave me a guitar pick. Cool guy.

Those of us who were old enough in the eighties we had the option every day to listen to music from all over the universe it was cool as hell. @Brewzerr
@Brewzerr 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Cheap Trick showed us 70's kids that arena rock can actually be FUN without taking yourself seriously. By the late 70's I was so fed up with all the 'serious' rock stars and their pose. Rock had reached a point where the band members thought themselves godlike and untouchable to the teeming masses. I started getting more into the (then) new punk and new wave bands around that time, but Cheap Trick was an exception. Even after I dove headfirst into hardcore punk I still kept waving the banner for CT. They always put the music and the energy ahead of the dumb rock star mystique. Still a great band to this day (though I really miss Bun E Carlos).

This was one of the first albums I paid for out of my own pocket when I was a kid and it was first released. Drove my parents, and neighbours, crazy playing it as loud as possible on Dad's 'Stereogram'. The irony is here I am 50 yrs later, suffering complex PTSD, and being haunted by bad dreams. The innocence of youth and the cards life deals us.

Hanging up my gear each shift and heaving a sigh of relief because I was in one piece. (Don't confuse me with the idiot Police Officers who feature greatly on YT. A lot has changed in the 20 yrs since I was doing it. I shudder when I see how some Police behave today). I have a lot of Vietnam Vet friends, mostly former colleagues who went into law enforcement after their military service ended. You and I are part of the club who understand what it's like to be used up by the machine then tossed away like a dirty rag when we cease to be of use. One of my good Viet Vet mates (3RAR 67-68 and survived FSB Coral-Balmoral), summed it up one day in two quotes: "C-Rations are full of sugar and salt - it keeps you angry". As much as I love Cheap Trick... I mean, they've been one of my top 5 favorite bands for about 43 years now... I gotta say no to this. There were *SOOO* many other bands before this that kicked the doors down for punk and 'alternative' music. I mean, where to begin? A good starting point would be the mid 60's with bands like the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, and the Sonics (among many others). In the late 60's and early 70's there was the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Modern Lovers, Droogs, Flamin' Groovies, etc... and then punk pretty much kicked off in '75, at least in NYC -- two whole years before Cheap Trick even had their first album out. Punk bands like the Dictators and the Ramones had albums out before Cheap Trick did. I'll tell ya what CT should be credited for, and that's making arena rock FUN again. They proved to the world that big time rock bands don't have to take themselves too seriously to be successful. They made it accessible at a time when most rock stars thought themselves godlike and untouchable. They were kind of like the missing link between big arena rock and punk/new wave attitude

Back in the 80's I was a bartender at a popular bar in Royal Oak. One of my customers was a light guy for the Venue that Cheap Trick was playing. He asked me if I wanted to "shadow him" meaning I could follow him on his duties. I said sure, what the hell. I didn't charge the guy a dime for his tab and I saw Cheap Trick from the rafters! Best seats in the house.

these guys definitely carved out their own piece of rock history. Getting past the hits that you hear on the radio, they were a tight band. Hearing this song takes me quickly back to being a kid on the 70's. Good times and great music with the likes of these guys, Sabbath, Judas Priest, Pink Floyd, and the list goes on and on..

By '78 they were already huge in Japan, and they were starting to take off pretty quickly here in the states. Surrender made a small splash on the charts that summer. I was already into them by then, but I didn't get to actually see them until the following year, on this tour, with Sweet at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston. One of the top 10 best shows I've ever been to in my life. However I did finally get to see them at a bar many years later, in '97 at Stubb's BBQ in Austin. That show was almost as good.

I was 11 years old when Dream Police was released,which at the time,was very popular. I would hear it being played on the jukebox in my school cafeteria almost everyday. This was my first introduction to Cheap Trick,who became one of my most favorite bands of all time. Dream Police,in my opinion,is the quintessential song that displays the great talent of all the members in Cheap Trick,especially Bun E. Carlos who has often been overlooked for being an excellent drummer. His drumming is impeccable as the song reaches a crescendo with the string section.

It seems threw time that back in early times the music was so good and skilled and the early blues birthed rock music and took it in many new directions and as we musically evolved threw decades of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s music was great and so many great bands rememberd. Why does music suuuuuck so bad today? How did this art just become ear pollution by today's artists? I know there are great rockers coming up somewhere but why is generic created music being in the mainstream today? This makes me sad. I'd rather listen to disco music than most music is today
