Testing out a new sprocket on my 2024 KTM 300 XC-W. It comes with the 45 tooth sprocket and I'm swapping for a 47 tooth.
Here is the sprocket I bought:

I did this to my 2024 250xcw as well as the more aggressive throttle cam and oh my gosh I’m so glad I did! So good! Second and third gear ARE much more usable and I’m not clutching so much in first gear in the tighter trails!

A couple years back I switched to a 12-52 setup on my 250 xcf, and I don't see any downside to it. Makes it basically impossible to stall whenever I have to crawl in a rock garden or riverbed or bunches of downed trees. Ya on single track I need to shift up to 3rd or 4th, but thats why these bikes have 6 gears. Plus it's super fun letting the bike idle in 1st gear and only be moving 1-2 mph

Be sure to check the chain slack spec. The new chassis has a significantly higher slack specification.

Just a heads up, I had a Primary Drive front sprocket on a yz450 that ended up stripped my countershaft requiring an entire engine teardown. Assume it was a slight tolerance miss-match with the aftermarket part. Expensive lesson learned on that one. From now on (at least with the front sprocket) OEM only for me.

hi fellas, yesterday I tried 12/48 for the 250 TBI. Works pretty good in slow speed technical stuff.

I have the same bike and I've been wondering about that. Does it help with low end torque? I find it a bit difficult to keep it in the correct torque spot on the rpms with the stock sprocket.

I'll be honest, I've never noticed much change in handling characteristics when moving up or down a tooth or two here and there. It's not moving the axle enough, maybe a 1/4 inch. You're not drastically altering the wheelbase. As for the rear suspension, just reset your sag and loosen compression by a click if needed.

I would like to hear about the handling characteristics and shock performance. Nimble equals less stability and harsher ride? My guess is there is no difference you can feel.

If you’re worried about reducing the wheelbase just use a longer chain.

Hey Kyle. I ran a 12 tooth for a bit on my 2024 TE 300. It’s the same ratio as a 13:49. I found first to be a bit lower than needed and found myself shifting into 3rd a bit too much. I found 13:52 to be perfect on my 2022. I’m wondering if with the 47 on the back of you’re primarily now in 2nd for mountain single track as that’s what I’m going for? I’ve also been told that with countershaft a bit lower than previous years that the 12 could cause excessive slider wear. Not sure if that’s a real risk or not. I also do big alpine scree slopes with my bike and stock 3rd is awesome for that so I’m nervous that the 47 will make 3rd be too low for that? Lastly, what do you think about a high comp head with stock gearing? I’m thinking the extra torque might make second almost perfect and would allow me to maintain my stock 3rd for those big scree slope climbs.

Nice! Could have changed front sprocket by one tooth as well and got similar result. You should try a high compression head.

Its already a 13T, I don'tthink you'd want to go smaller than that.

With the smaller diameter it might cause excessive wear on your chain guides, would have to be careful of clearance around the case, also causes some more stress on the chain and will wear out faster than a 13T.@@kauaienduro

That would be an 8% drop instead of 4%, so pretty big difference. With that said my buddy had a 12T on his YZ250 and the 2nd gear snap on that thing was incredible. As soon as you got into an open area tho, it felt like you were missing a gear.

I would probably go to a 12 front instead, that way your axle moves back instead of forward. Axle forward makes for shorter turning but wheelies easier on hill climbs.

Losing teeth on the front makes a big impact. I did that on my 450, and now it can crawl in first gear, which I want for nasty stuff. Second and third are great on the trails now, too.

I don't mind aluminum sprockets, but I refuse to buy one that has the anodizing cut away where you need it the most(the teeth). I want the surface hardness that the anodizing brings to fight wear.

ktm like all the new bikes and setup for riders around 68kg , if you're heavier than that by more than 8kg you need to change the factory settings, spring preload and or rate, static sag , and sprocket gearing.
