Awesome job. I see in the comments you've already heard the breaking in on glass thing. It still shows the cheap one doing a better job. Unless the sonax has a huge amount of protective coating on it. Which I belive it doesn't. Thanks, you just made up my mind on which one to buy.

Second best part of the video is Mini Jimbo checking the heat of the truck exhaust pipe at around 7:12. Keepin it real as always. Pretty interesting tho. I hadn't realized they started making the skins for pads, I'd be kinda hesitant to use them in fear of removing too much, but like you said only on the heavy oxidation paints. Thanks for saving me the dollars man. Keep it up.

There are few things in detailing that caution me more than the clay process. As clear coats get thinner and softer, we should be very reserved about how much we decide to clay and I only do it if there's no other alternative. I have taken melamine foam to paint with a lubricant and have had better success with less marring. But great video Jimbo and I love the tape!👍

Hey Jimbo, I didn't see you break the clay disc in on the window. I had a clay cloth that I forgot to break in on glass first and it didn't work worth squat until I'd used it on the windshield first. I wonder if that could have contributed to the results you have gotten?

My bad, I thought when you said you had been using the cheap one for awhile, you meant it was used. I've heard many detailers say to always use a clay mitt/towel/disk on glass first break it in, before using on paint. Not really sure if it's a factual issue, just heard it a bunch.
@AussieDetails
@AussieDetails 5 жыл бұрын
@@autodetailingpodcast I'm not sure how the glass helps break it in. I can say that I found the clay cloth worked better after using it in glass. Prior to the glass break in, the cloth didn't pick up many contaminants at all. Now I always break them in on glass. Not the traditional clay bar, just the cloths, discs and pads.

Look at the pattern from the cheap one to the sonac. The cheap one is more tightly packed mini circles, or geo impressions, the sonac has far less. Basically if you think of it logically I think the reason the cheap one removes way more overall, is that per pass, think of it like 10x more passes. All clay blocks, bars, towels, and discs, the more geo impressions, the more it takes off per pass. You can see in the sonac, each geo is like the size of a dime, while on the cheap one, each geo is far smaller. The results makes perfect sence to me. Great video bro. Thanks.

Nice and helpful videos. However, this one is flawed as you did not prime the sonax disc before use. It would be fair to repeat this test following the manufacturers instructions: "Directions for use: Before using the SONAX Clay Disc on a painted surface, you must first “prep” the pad by removing a protective layer engineered onto the surface of the pad. Simply spray a generous amount of lubricant onto a GLASS surface (the windshield works perfectly), and briefly polish the surface. Once primed, you can move onto the painted surfaces" (from Autogeek online)

it takes at least 5 times as long to use a clay bar. I can use a Nanoscrub pad and have a car done in 15-20 minutes. And even if I was using a clay bar, I'd still use an iron remover. And if the cheap pad on Amazon's description is accurate it's fine grade so it shouldn't do too much in the way of maring. I still always do at least a 1 step after claying though, but for someone who doesn't that's going to be a plus. After my 1st time using a Nanoscub pad I knew I'd never touch a clay bar again. You save a ton of time and it's cheaper too. Even with the Nanoskin one at $40, I get 40'ish cars off it. 2 herefor $15 here? that's a no-brainer.

Contaminants don't stick to it like they do with clay. I do a small section, wipe the disc, another section, and repeat

When you say they don't last, what 5 cars? 10 cars? 15 cars? They're 2 for $15 right now. Even if you only got 10 cars per disc, you'd still be able to clay more cars dollar for dollar compared to Nanoscrub or the Sonax disc.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a black car to see results? It seems like you and dallas paint correction always use white cars.

JTSBMW the reason for a white car here was to show the iron remover post clay. It would be hard to show that on a black car

Again, you missed the point. The iron remover was used to see how well the clay discs worked. It’s easier to see the reaction of the iron remover on a white car.
