CHEAP vs. EXPENSIVE Eyeshadows - Can you really tell the difference?

Today I put 2 of my favorite indie single eyeshadow brands, Clionadh and Looxi, to the test and compared how they handled similar shades. Some shades from looxi came before the clionadh ones, others came later, so i don't think looxi is always trying to dupe clionadh but they have a hell lot of overlap. I could make a couple more of these just with these two brands and I think i will later on
Just a little disclaimer, what we call cheap or expensive really depends on everyone's situation and point of view. I know some very unimpressive singles retail for over $20 and some people don't call that expensive while others don't agree $3 is cheap for a single eyeshadow, so "cheap vs expensive" is not an objective title cause cheap/expensive is quite subjective.

🩺 I guessed the Clionadh correctly, but I also have 140 SGC and 0 Looxi. Looxi seems to have less obvious shifts and less opacity so it might be a less intimidating way to start multichromes. Also, maybe an easier way to incorporate multichromes in a corporate environment. I've seen a lot of content around Looxi, but this was probably the clearest I've seen the differences. This was great!

That must be one hell of a collection! Yes, the formula is something that can't be duped, looxi can only attempt color. And I never imagined looxi as a good introduction to shifty shades, but you're so right! It's a good way for people to try stuff and see what they like before committing to a more expensive version.

For sure! I have shades from 2019 and they're not nearly as sparkly as these. Their metallics have been consistently good though

What a fun video!! I totally agree about Adornment & Jelly Bean being spot on dupes! I got Adornment during the Clionadh sale this summer and once I realized how similar it was to Jelly Bean, my mind was blown!

Interesting video. In general the looxi looked less opaque but a couple of them i guessed incorrectly. I wonder if the value of cliondah also lies in longevity and creasing and/or ease in application like not needing a glitter glue.

Yes! Looxi has the sparkle more scattered while clionadh's is uniform. The value is totally on the formula, clionadh's feels less waxy than looxi's

My logic w shimmer shadow comparisons always is... You put it on your eye not your arm. No one's eyelid is smooth and plane enough to show all the shine, the sparkle and the shifts you see in a swatch and depending on eye shape and lid space it could severely affect the shifts. Also natural day light takes away some of the shine and especially sparkles in eyeshadows too. So anything but big difference in shine, sparkle or shift might look the exact same in a eye look over a days wear in non studio light

Agreed, the real test is the wear test and you could tell the difference in my closeup picture with my eyes closed, but in real life no one could tell these 2 had such a difference. I guess makeup is really for us at this point 😅

I recently got some Clionadh eyeshadows,, for the very first time. I prolly paid more than I should have since they don't ship to my country, but I think the closest I have that is similar are pressed pigments. Looxi eyeshadows feel more oily, and just aren't as opaque or luxe feeling as Clionadh. That said some of the cheaper Clionadh eyeshadows are just too expensive, now that other brands have very similar shades.

You're right, the texture between these two are very different. And damn! The shipping to the USA is already expensive, I imagine it's even worse for further countries! I hope you've been enjoying your shades tho 😊

Their shipping is even expensive in Canada. 😬 I think Canada Post may be using carrier pigeons… or perhaps a horse-and-buggy setup.

@@joannahutz1258 you're right. Shipping in Canada actually costs about the same to the US. I think they tax the shipping itself in Canada. And it's not just Clionadh, Shine by SD also do the same so it's prolly a carrier thing. That said I paid double of that to ship to the EU and import taxes on top. Next time I'll just ship it to the US. I hope they can figure out a viable solution so that they can offer worldwide shipping, at this point it would be cheaper to just pay for DHL or UPS.

@@The-NieceThank you, I've been enjoying them quite a lot. I only ordered 4 shades, and 3 of them are from their new release. I was just contemplating getting more of their cheaper eyeshadows, but your video convinced me that it's much more interesting to get something cheaper instead. I am waiting on my Looxi order to arrive so hopefully I can try out their new and improved formula. Thank you for these comparisons, it helps a lot.😆

Very interesting video, and fantastic swatches if looking for that! I guessed right on all accounts except 3 (oddly enough 1 is a shade I own -- but haven't used yet) W/ that said, I was still very impressed by the similarity of the brands. I mean, I see it as marginal difference; a bit more visible in regard to wear time though. Food for thought, for sure. I wonder whether you use a glitter glue under your shadows though? My don't crease when I use that.

Amazing comparisons! I'm "international" for both brands, so when I add in exchange rates and cost of shipping, the cost difference is less dramatic. I bought Clionadh for their longevity, and it sounds like Looxi's shade descriptions would make it difficult to know exactly what I'm buying off their website. I also bought 16 shades with one of Clionadh's small stained glass magnetic palettes, so when they released their SGC expansion I couldn't justify getting more shades! I love having all my Clionadh in their little palette, and I'd have to kick some shades out to make room for new ones (which I don't want to do).

I guessed all of them corrently but it really is a slight difference in the density of the particles or how evenly the particles disperse on your skin making some shades even seem shinier than looxu bn is so slight but the difference is so slight, I have been wanting to get into clionadh eyeshadows due to its popularity b ut I'm definitely gonna dip my toes in with looxi first now! thanks for this video!

Oh, that's interesting! It's a great brand for beginners if you're not looking to spend too much. Once you know what you're into, then definitely look into higher end brands like clionadh

Looxi isn't as intense but they are still gorgeous especially for the price. I've tried making these on my own and it's definitely not easy. (I still haven't figured it out)

Looxi wicked witch is a good alternative to emerald! Looxi starburst or peacock is even closer to corrosion than salt water taffy. Do I have all four? Yes 😅 Also can I say, your nails look beautiful! Is it a clionadh polish?

I’ve had my Clionadh collection for a few years now, but I get scared to use them because of the price. So I buy the Looxi version to feel less worried 😂 it’s not healthy to be honest!! (Just heard you talk about traveling and taking your cheaper dupes - same! With how I travel, I would hate if a Clionadh shadow shattered.)

I know exactly what you mean, I felt that way when I got my first expensive palette 😅 and tbh it's not the worst thing ever cause eyeshadow lasts a lot longer than most makeup, but it's good to use your expensive stuff to treat yourself 🥰 and yeah, I'll never take my expensive stuff travelling unless I'm ready for the possible loss of it 🤣

One major difference between the formulas is wear time. Looxi creases on me. Clionadh doesn’t.

Same, in my comparison on the eyes, I noticed the Looxi shadow creased in about 3 hours while clionadh lasted well for over 8 hours. The price difference has to come from formulation and it's very hard to dupe formulas for much cheaper.

interesting your licorice lace is so blue in the shift. I got it expecting it to be similar to their ginger bread shade but the shift is entirely purple/pink

Huh, interesting! when it comes to looxi, sometimes they change formulas. I see some old and new videos of shadows that I own and notice tiny differences too

@@The-Niece true, that's seems to be the story with looxi. I also got the shade shimmy and there were no turquoise shifts in it at all. Just yellow base with that pink to gold shimmer in it, it's a shame since i generally have good luck with them.

Do you find that layering up the Looxi works ok? I don’t mind using more/layering up an eyeshadow to get the same opacity as the higher end ones but wasn’t sure because several people have mentioned that they are waxy or slippery.

You can layer them to make them more opaque but they don't quite reach clionadh's shine. It's like looxi's sparkle is a bit less reflective. You can tell the difference in the wear test picture, it has creasing but it's also less reflective.

One of my favorite KZfaqrs has said when she gets her Looxi Shadows, she takes a paper towel and presses out some of the binder and that seems to help with creasing and longevity.

@missmrocks They'll be back soon but their shipping is terribly slow so I think it's good you'd rather try another brand. As of now, looxi has nothing like it but clionadh's tessera is pretty close, also revenge by shine by sd and surrender beauty by face glaze beauty. Hope this helped
