Great test and review! I have this same stove and love it! I found a few little issues too, but they are so minor/easy fix that they wouldn't make me regret buying it. Most of them I even managed to take care of right at the first campsite. The first was the lack of a spark arrestor. I unboxed this at camp, and we needed one where we were at. A 🤦‍♂️ moment having not thought to check for one ahead of time, but I managed to put one together with things I already had there. First, we had a pop-top can that happened to fit snuggly over the chimney, so I cut the other end off. For on top of that, I had a steel mesh pencil cup in my van(random, I know) that was about the same inner diameter as the outside of the can. Finally, a small, maybe 5", stainless steel pan made a perfect cap. Everything fit together beautifully, and it pops on and off like the rest of the chimney! A few screws held everything together, and I'm still using it! You're right, the upside down orientation of the chimney will absolutely cause it to leak creosote. I found that it usually takes a couple of days though and the stainless steel cleans up pretty easily. Another thing with mine was that only One leg seemed to have a just a single spot weld to keep it from bending outward. Sure enough, the other legs eventually started to bend a bit. I may weld the corners, but I think drilling the legs and using removable pins would work very well. I had the same issue with the cook cover warping. I tried flipping it over so it would warp inward, and now it seals so well that It nearly locks in place! The screws on All of the moving parts like to loosen/tighten. The bottom screw for the door hinge kept falling out. I ended up cutting a piece of wire from an old grill grate that someone had left behind. I fit it through both hinges, and bent the ends over. It's snug and works beautifully! I just keep an old Phillips in the kit with the poker for occasionally tightening the screws on the vent and door handle, nbd. I also carved little wood handles for the damper and door handles. They're easier to use and don't get so hot. Once I adjusted the damper and tightened the scews up really well (you need two Phillips screwdrivers) they didn't come loose again. I also put a gasket on the door and sealed the chimney. Not really necessary, but I could occasionally see some flame through a little gap where the chimney attaches to the stove when we'd have a hot fire in it. This stove has been a great investment overall. The modifications I've made are pretty cheap and simple, some not even necessary. And it kept us warm in a 10 X 10 tent during gusty wind and freezing temperatures above 9000' before it saw most of those👍👍
@AdventureswithSpackmann
@AdventureswithSpackmann 2 жыл бұрын
@Dave F so glad you enjoyed! The loosening is my worst problem with it, but like you said easily fixed and not a deal breaker. I like the turning the circle over, such an easy fix lol. People still know who Cheech and Chong were? Amazing…. I have the album with the giant smoke. But the upside is snakes and mosquitos don’t like smoke filled tents. Course, if you were using your stove it was probably passed mosquito season. My friend was setting up his tent and as he unrolled it, right in the center was a dead snake. He keeps the tent under his bed when not using it. I’m like…. Yeah it’s funny, we all laughed but if it were me, sometime in the dark of the night the memory of the snake in the tent under my bed would ruin sleep. Ha🎄

As with all thin sheet metal stoves it's a compromise, but one which has a lot going for it. Installation, particularly the roof/wall penetration will be critical to the safe operation of the stove and it cannot be over emphasised that stove management inside one's tent/vehicle/cabin will be necessary to ensure adequate ventilation and smoke extraction. Smoke detector and CO2 detector together with common sense and ventilation are your friends, ditto a fire extinguisher. A tiny stove can really enhance one's quality of life, however, unless it's managed it can also prematurely end ones life...

That is the proper way for exhaust pipes to be assembled. It's more important to not let any fumes come out of those pipes as the smoke goes up, then the concern of creasold dripping down the pipe.

The fume will not be an issue after the smoke created the draft. The soot dripping is a safety issue. Once it leaks out of the pipe and touch the stove surface, it will create smoke inside the tent and have people killed.

Two thoughts here. 1. I read a comment below about instant coffee. An easy way to make ground coffee is to make ahead coffee bags. Just measure ground coffee into coffee filters the number of cups you want to make at a time. Use an old 🍞 bread twist tie to keep the coffee in it. Then just drop one in a coffee pot when the water starts to boil. I do this sometimes. 2. Good thing no fire was going when Billy f@&:ed. I can just 👀 see that tent 💣. .

@DD547 I’ve done this as well. I currently use this method for chaga tea but I just tie string around it. It’s a great method but instant is still easier and faster lol. @simplewoodslife NatureHike makes a great tent. The FireHiking is a good one too but it’s small. In my opinion I like a bigger hot tent. You are going to be spending a lot of time in them. If you’re just trying it out to see if you want to hot tent, go cheap. FireHiking does make a bigger teepee too. Haven’t used that one. Anyways have fun!

its not as portable as a collapsible type but if you have a sledge or something it wouldnt a big issue. I like that the stove pipe is in pieces not a big coil. I could see using this outside the van where open fires arent allowed.. they make small cast iron comals or griddle amazon has a 9.5' comal from imusa for $20 but it weghs 4.5lbs... they also have an 8.5" stainless comal from imusa that weighs 1,2 lbs for under $10 that would probably be better. I have an imusa stainless steel sq griddle I LOVE, and I have several of their super light weight cups that I can boil water in super quick

A year ago I bought the TMS Portable Military stove from Amazon ($119 right now)...and I've used it twice. Both times I've smoked myself out of the tent each time I opened the door to load wood, and while sleeping waking up to smoke coming out of the front vent. I don't like it very much. Pipe sections nearly clog closed with creosote (burning my own ash and locust) and it's dripped all over my tent, and the piped sections are a PITA to take apart. Interesting review that I might look into but I'd like to see a follow up after a few more uses.

@ExploringAndMe so I ended up flipping the pipe upside down by making an adapter to fit the pipe and go into the stove. During my testing of the adapter I had the stove extremely hot, 800-1000F for a while. I did notice some warping on the stove top the next day. I don’t recommend burning a stove that hot ever cause it’s just not smart lol. But I believe the stove is still functional and/or fixable. I believe it was my testing that cause the warping. I’ve thought about putting a piece of steel over the top. Haven’t done anything with it yet. Thanks for watching

They don't ship to Canada?? Crazy. It says I'm out of the shippers shipping area.. that sucks. I'm sure I'll find one , I'm looking for one to be installed in my rv but apparently not this one lol

@M. T. Electric if you search for tent wood stove and sort by price(low to high) you may find the same one sold under a different name. Thanks for watching

If you were to supply air from outside directly to bottom of stove (not use warm air inside tent to waste heat) how big would the tube need to be? Anyone do this?
@AdventureswithSpackmann
@AdventureswithSpackmann 2 жыл бұрын
@Garion Porter most hot tents stoves setup right next to a wall so the tube wouldn’t be that long. I’ll try this in the future. Thanks for watching

@CLARK SIMPNEAUX yes it doesn’t stay cold but it stays less hot then the pipe itself for sure! Haven’t had a problem with it yet. Works great! Thanks for watching! I have a video on how to make it.
