About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

My ART X-15 foot switch has been in use for 30 years. I called them up asking for a power cable for it and they sent it free of charge, 25 years after buying it. It was then that I knew ART was one of the great companies serving the music community. Of course we all grew up on ART multi effects and learned MIDI from them. Here's to many more!

This makes me happy. I worked at ART here in Rochester, NY from 1990 to 1999. My first product was the X-15; I wrote the software. Looking back, I'd probably do some things a bit differently, and I would have pushed harder for a three-digit LED display. But ART was always about pragmatic products, and that's what I see in this review of the PRO VLA II: Do the best job you can for an affordable price and everyone is happy.

Compressing on the way in while recording is definitely the way to go. Performance is everything! When bands hear something that sounds like a record in their headphones, they get inspired.
@sonicwingnut

Yeah I'm considering that now, even if for the time being I just run a plugin. I have trouble getting the pitch right with headphones on and I suspect more compressed dynamics on the way in might help a lot when hearing my voice back.
@LouisLinggandtheBombs
@LouisLinggandtheBombs 4 жыл бұрын
sonicwingnut Different singers need different things. Some need an 1176 into an LA2A while recording. Others just need reverb on the headphone mix. Others find reverb makes them make even more mistakes!
@LouisLinggandtheBombs
@LouisLinggandtheBombs 4 жыл бұрын
sonicwingnut oh a super tip for pitch problems whilst singing is that if the singer is singing too sharp turn down the music in headphones a bit and if she/he is singing too flat, turn the headphone music up a bit. The singer then pushes it a bit more or slacks off a bit. Great trick.

People have gotten too dependent on their mix engineers and are too afraid to commit to sounds in the studio. I’ve always loved processing in the studio and having as little done in the mix as possible. That’s how CLA said American Idiot was done and that’s the highest selling pop punk album of all time

Yes! I can run compression as a monitor-effect only, and the singers I've tracked have all been like..."Dude, my voice sounds like a record already", and it's so much more fun and engaging for them. The results follows.

I have owned its preamp counterpart for years now. I love the MPA II. i installed some Dr.J ax12s in mine. The best part about it is the ability the impedance match your mic on the way in. Then the balanced line out the back brings the best sound the mic can have with out impedance issues. I am gonna definitely get one of these now. Thanks Glenn!

I bought this a few years back. When I ordered it, I also ordered a pair of Mullards thinking I would no doubt have to upgrade the tubes to squeeze a bit more out of the unit. That was 2012. I still haven't put the Mullards in. Haven't needed to. This compressor is truly exceptional for the price. Hell, it's exceptional at two or three times the price. It is extremely transparent and compliments damn near any source you pass through it. I think a lot of people buy the ART because it's cheap and wind up keeping it even when they eventually add the 1176, etc next to it.

I've been using one of these, paired with the MPA II, on room/ambient mics for a while now. Especially with my ribbons (the MPA's variable impedance really comes in handy), I can really boost the gain on the pre and then squash with the VLA for maximum ambient resonance.

I was part of a test for the original Pro VLA before it was released to the public. Was doing a live performance and advised the sound engineers that they were going to get a very hot and properly compressed signal (and that they should not run their compressors for the show). They left them on and I shut down a 10KW sound system twice during the performance. The one we used was a Pre-production unit that ART GAVE the writer (my good friend)...Pro VLA is one of the best tube compressors I've ever used to this day in a studio.

Another unit worth trying if you haven't already is the Art Pro MPA 2 dual tube preamp. I really enjoyed using it when I did to record electric guitar, bass and drums. The impedance control is your friend, to the degree that it makes for a great DI bass tone-shaper. The only downside is that you don't want to use it on quiet sources because it can get a bit noisy when cranked. I tried it out on room mics and regretted it, which is why you want to use it with loud sources and/or Cloudlifters. Great review as usual, Glenn.

The Pro VLA II is *not* a tube-based compressor, even though that's how they make it sound it in the big print. It uses a tube in the gain section, yes, but the compressor section itself is a Vactrol optical-electronic circuit.

The ART PRO VLA II is a solid piece of entry level gear and you can find great deals on used models. I swapped the tubes in mine and I can't notice that big of a sonic difference besides less noise but I only use it for light vocal compression and it does the job well.

There was a Mic Preamp shootout in sound on sound a few years back, using the ART Pro MPA 2 , Ams Neve, SSl, API. It was a blind test. The ART came out top. It sounded best to my ears also. After the results were made available, you should have heard all the API, Neve etc users back peddling. Too late! The ART was top. After seeing that I bought the PRO VLAll for my studio, it is my prefered compressor, above my Avalon, Neve and the rest. Use your ears & forget the hype like industry standard. Ok this is not the MIc pre, but you get my point..

Pro VLA 2 is a super underpriced comp! I use it all the time but the quality control is the only issue. I ended up sending one back but I kept the second one. Then I took off the hood and used a tweaker to match the stereo gains so I can use it on my bus. Happy ever since!!!!! Even on master bus it adds some nice 3d space when using it no comp engaged.

ART is pushing out a lot of good rack units for a low price, defintly worth checking out for the home and smaller recording studio. Got a TPS II recently since those I have in my mixer suck for dynamic mic's , plus I can use it as an all purpose Mic preamp on the fly with it's presets, lessens the workflow a bit. It doesn't reach the typical tube sound from much more expensive units but it get's the job done. Might also get their headphone amp soone or later.

My ART VLA II compressor keeps company for my Distressors and Fatsos. It is an excellent optical compressor that incredibly is part of the configuration of large studios. Soon, I would like to buy another unit. It can be a soft compressor or a very aggressive one. I don't recommend it much for the Master Bus, but I recommend that it track and mix individual tracks. A valve is actually there to add some heat to the signal flow, according the review. With regard to valve replacement, this procedure is useless. As the valve is not in the compressor segment it has no more than 1% harmonic distortion. We have already done this by including measurement software at the device output outlet. This is a great compressor to keep original, unless the MOD includes items other than the valve.

Micah Lindstrom The input or output levels of the Pro VLA II can be monitored by the analog VU meter. The VU METER switch selects the source of the audio for this meter. The ballistics characteristic of the meter provides an accurate indication of the average signal level. If you need peak level info (critical in digital systems) use the central stereo LED bargraph OUTPUT LEVEL meter.

jmac2050 No shit Sherlock but there’s more than one way to skin a cat... I think of cheap as a perspective to what something costs compared to similar functioning pieces of gear. A $300 compressor is cheap compared to a $3,000 one. A $1,000 compressor is cheap compared to a $3,000. Both could also be considered affordable depending on budget. When I see something “cheap” in regards to what you said I call it for what it is: a piece of shit. Being “cheap” has nothing to do with what something’s retail price is. Just look at the vast selection of boutique pedal builders there are now charging astronomical prices for unoriginal shit gear you could build better yourself (I’m not talking about the big name guys). Again. Semantics. With a dash of perspective and pinch of subjectiveness.

The more I listen to hardware compressors, the more they just sound better to my ears than most plugins. Now, I know that regardless of which option you choose, whether software or any number pieces of hardware, good results can be obtained if you know what you're doing, but for whatever reason the hardware compressors seem to sound more natural and better-suited to the job. It's pretty awesome that a compressor like this is so affordable. I was looking into some of the Warm Audio stuff, which sounds great and is reasonably priced, but this seems like a better choice for someone just getting into the hardware side of things that doesn't want to spend a ton of money. Great bargain. Thanks for the demonstration, very well done!

A cheap bass that's set up well and in good condition kicks the nuts off a poorly set up/bad condition bass in the £1k bracket. I've just got an active pup'd Ibanez TMB100 for less than £200 and the preamp is very good. Great gigging and recording bass. If you're going for passive pups I'd recommend a Sansamp Bass Driver Deluxe pedal - 100% analogue preamp, great studio and live tool (if you have good monitors). If you're gigging shitty PAs in smaller venues, my Trace Elliot Commando 12" 100W has been unbelievably reliable and versatile in that circuit. Best of luck fellow bassist.

Great Review about the advantages of using analogue on input chain! I used to have their 'Voice Channel' tube pre with comp/limit/expander channel strip. The comp was very similar to this one in a sense of 'there but not there'. The pre was ok, kinda weak below a certain point. Would recommend it over overpriced mid-level pres because it gives the Bang-For-Buck.

They work really well and don't add significant noise, while REALLY warming up even a cheap large diaphragm condenser, and providing very solid phantom power.

Then it's like "I can feel my heart" ok but "bay day eggle" or something. I've repeated the parts like a dozen times each and I literally can't figure out what it is supposed to be. I don't have a problem with her singing ability, but either her enunciation is bad or her choices in where to break up the syllables were just not good.

It has 12at7 tubes inside. Not as much internal noise as a 12ax7 but more output than a 12au7 while still having a clean output. The 12au7 would be clinically clean but have a much reduced output causing you to crank the output gain to get the same level out, and then you would probably have all the noise from the whole unit added to the sound. Great review. I am looking at outfitting my space with ART pro audio gear as I build a budget minded project studio. Spend the big money where you need to. Like amps, cabs, drums, cymbals etc.

Before I even watch, I KNOW these are good. I have used the "Pro-Channel II" all in one channel strips for a 4 mic setup on a kit, going into a Tascam 388, and the sound was AMAZING. That's basically just a tube mic pre, followed by a solid state active parametric eq, then into one channel of this exact compressor circuit. So basically you get a single channel unit, the preamp (with 48V phantom power and adjustable impedance), the eq, and one channel of this compressor along with a "de-esser" that you'll want to just bypass, all in one strip, for this same price, and it sounds GREAT! Cheap tube recording gear is usually more "tube" than tube, usually running half of a 12ax7 at a very low plate voltage to add the flaws of tube equipment into the chain without any of the positives, but the higher end ART stuff is actually really nice. Don't buy the "TUBE MP" or the "TubePAC" or any of that shit, but these and the preamps and the channel strips are awesome. If you pay 300 bucks for a tube pre or compressor or channel strip from ART, you get good shit. BY. THE. WAY. GLENN. I want you opinion on "bone-conduction" headphone technology, and specifically if it would be good for tracking vocals in applications where the singer NEEDS to hear himself/herself and regular headphones make it harder. Have you tried them? Have opinions on them? Obviously, not the bluetooth ones, but they do have wired sets. Thanks in advance, and FUCK YOU GLENN!

Adam Rainstopper Incorrect. That old classic tube sound from the 60's came from badly designed tube circuits. And they were all tube. Most of that tubby classic tube sound comes from the massive transformers not the tubes themselves. Modern tube circuits won't get you that classic tube sound. Not an ART mike Preamp with ONE TUBE AT THE OUTPUT STAGE. All cheap so called tube equipment today are not tubes. They are hybrid tube/transistor compressors or mike Preamp. You want that classic tube sound? By a FAIRCHILD LIMITER. IT WILL NOT BE $300.
@AdamRainStopper
@AdamRainStopper 6 жыл бұрын
Uh, first, welcome to 2018, second .......... no one who is even CONSIDERING buying one of these is just going back and forth trying to make up their mind whether to get this or *a Fairchild 670 limiter* . . . . . some of this stuff really should be self-evident . . . . . third, at what point in my comment did I say ANYTHING about "getting that classic tube sound" ( and while you're at it, measure "classic tube sound" for me, quantify it) with any of this shit? Finally, I use what sounds good in specific applications, and I am NOT looking for anything even approaching the sound of a 60's recording, nor would I be in any position to be a "gotta have ALLL TOOOOOBE" snob for the entirety of the signal path between her lips and his ears on a recording that is going to end up on someone's ipod, being amplified through a 12 volt solid state car stereo. You have presented a false-dichotomy, along with assuming that I want a sound from the 60's, so a strawman too, and you BEGAN your comment with "incorrect." Sorry, what was the factual assertion I made that could even BE "correct" or "incorrect"? I said I like the all in one channel-strip versions of this thing, specifically the compression for specifically drums. "So called tube equipment"? Yeah, I already KNOW which message board you have gotten the majority of your talking-points from, and even the snobs on that board would probably acknowledge that there is a MAJOR difference between the cheap little DI box sized "Tube MP" or the similar thing Behringer makes (all running half a tube at STARVED PLATE) and THESE preamps, compressors, channel strips, from this series. No one expects a fucking Fairchild for 300 bucks. I mean, is it Fairchild or nothing? Like, are the sub-$1k Warm Audio LA2A's and LA3A's also "so-called tube equipment"? Why AM I even asking you? You don't seem to know what you're talking about, you should really work on that.

"Sarcasm runs in my blood and I can recognize it a mile away" Then how did you miss it? Anyway, I know Glenn likes me, he gave me a massage once. As for the setting on the MPA, it depends on A) What "tubey" means to you. Are you looking to push it over the edge? I've only used the 3-in-one version so far, but it takes a bit to hit the input hard. The gain control will obviously get you some distortion later in the signal path, but a big part of how the preamp reacts is how much signal it gets on the input. So that leads me to B) the hotter condenser mics will push it harder. This kind of equipment has a somewhat dark sound, when used on a kit, it will round out the OHs and snare mic a bit, good for taming the harshness of bright cymbals and snare attack. Also, play around with the input impedance a bit. You want to - usually - closely match the impedance of the mic you're using, but you can actually go a little bit in either direction and get different high-frequency response. I will, however, advise against one thing, and that is overusing the "low voltage" setting. It will sound cool on some stuff, like a DI bass, but it does decrease the plate voltage to something ridiculous like 80VDC or lower, and that will suck a lot of the gain out, and it'll clip in a way that sounds kinda weird on most sources. Experiment with it, but just keep an ear out for loss of attack and dynamics and high frequencies.

This compressor is very cheap and there is many reasons. The electronic design is extremely poor and cheap, seems to be done by advertising office. Few examples why: tubes are there just for marketing and to ruin the sound (they are powered at 40V instead than >200, because no additional high voltage power supply), no ground planes on the board, only electrolytic capacitors (worst sounding on the market) on the audio chain, and no protection resistor on the output so if you connect a mono jack instead of a balanced one you burn one of the two amplifiers driving the output, no bypass capacitor stabilizing the power supply on EVERY operational amplifier inside. Seriously Glenn, on the technical point of view this compressor is rubbish, its value is probably one tenth what they made you pay for. I worked on it for quite a while: excluded tubes, changed every capacitor to non electrolitic, inserted the bypass ones, repaired the broken output amplifier. We chould do a original/modified comparison if and when you want.

Dood, it's a $300 rack mount tube compressor, what do you expect? Of course they cut corners, but the results aren't as bad as you are painting them. I'd bet a full paycheck that you couldn't differentiate between samples mixed using this compressor and the same samples mixed using a compressor that cost 2X as much. I mean, you probably think you can, but it would be a guessing game for you (and I'm talking about full mixed samples, not just a simple guitar riff).

@@stevesynan3910That doesn't change the fact that tubes are put there just for tricking you into believing "it's a tube compressor". As I wrote you can't run a tube at 40V hoping the sound to become better, the design would be better without it. Yes! I would be very interested to do a blind test actually! Sadly I didn't took any before/after sample. The one that I modified has been redone for mastering purposes, now it extremely neutral/clear and precise when it is not compressing, when compressing it kept the character of the compression as the circuit driving the vactrol is more or less the same.
