Cheater Vent For Plumbing-How It Works (AKA Air Admittance Valve)

In this video, I talk about a cheater vent that is sometimes used in plumbing systems! A cheater vent is often referred to as an air admittance valve, and is used to allow air to enter the plumbing system without using a pipe to connect to the outside of the house. Cheater vents are often used in renovations or when incorporating a sink into a kitchen island. Air admittance valves are an easy way to let air into your drainage system (so that it functions properly).

For those who dont know, there are 2 types, Sealed and not sealed. The one pictured in the video is a free flowing open vent. The sealed ones are typically black and have a rubber seal helded closed by a spring, which are one way valves and allow air to be sucked in as needed, but doesn't let air out. The sealed type can go bad, because they can get stuck closed, not allowing air in or out. Where are these typically located when put in a wall? Behind a shower or behind a toilet? I typically see them under a sink but I have a friend who had someone install some permanently behind a wall and they are having issues now. My other question is, how many are required for a 2 bathroom ventless house, meaning a house with No plumbing pipe roof vents? My assumption is there should be one at every location that has a drain, one per bathroom and one per kitchen.

It's a spring, so depending on what the spring is made of it may or may not rust. And that would also depend on the quality of the living conditions inside the home. Springs in general are extremely reliable. They sell plastic ones at cat toys are used so small they are microscopic, and so large I wouldn't be able to pick one up. Some might fail the first time you use a cheap pen, others are built into the foundations of buildings for earthquake damage prevention that will last longer than any of us will live.

If you use this in a wall, needs to have a panel. Also I would drill a inch hole on the top of the stud into the attic for it to get air. If you put in wall it will not have anyway to get air it needs and future home buyers wont even know its in there. Also buy a real valve something like a magic vent dont use knock off valves.

I’m planning on rutting my vent pipe that goes through the middle of what will be my daughters room in the attic. Cut and seal pipe from roofline then put this vent in the floor joists. The joist runs all along the house and out to my porch so it will get the air it needs I think.

Bad idea. Why don't you route the pipe into a wall. There's a reason why it goes through the roof, the air will dissipate better up high.

If you worry about sewer gasses leaking into your house after a new renovation, you have an easy life. Building codes almost always require access to anything someone will eventually need access to. Junctions, p-traps, cheater vent, manifolds, valves, etc. As such, wherever you have it installed you would have an access panel to get in there to test it anytime the bathroom smells unpleasant, or whenever paranoia insists. Sewer gasses don't smell like a typical "blown up" bathroom. But if you detect a hint of something that smells "weird", it's probably sewer gas. Especially if you can air it out with an open window, or fans, close the door, not use it for a while, and then see if the smell comes back on it's own.

These valves will break down and fail over time, so it's a bad idea to have it concealed in a wall, where sewer gas could leak out of it and make it difficult to find when trying to get rid of the smell. Best to just reroute that pipe to the right of that stud by drilling through it and go straight up and out the roof. Definitely a better, more permanent solution.

Alternative is if you are adding new sinks, bathtubs, toilets, just simply tear the wall open, tear the ceiling apart, cut a hole in your roof, do not put a island sink in, and do not go over the speed limit. I saw on a cruise ship, every wash machine had their own AAV. Someone should make them cut holes & put pipe thru every floor of the ship.

First, a AAV is a gravity controlled device. No springs are used in the operation of the device. Second, you need to box the valve and allow it to pull air from the room. You can not simply place it in a wall between two studs.

These vents are not up to code in all the States, please check with your local jurisdiction. Also, this installation is incorrect. You CAN'T hide an AAV behind walls due to possible (expected) valve failure which will cause sewer gasses to leak into the home. You MUST be able to see, hear and replace the valve at a glance. That's why they are usually installed under the sink. Don't follow this video's advice.

They should be illegal. They are supposed to be changed out on occasion and when they are buried in walls and such you cant find them when they fail filling the house full of stink and gas. Last one I found in a drop ceiling that failed and filled the space with methane. All it was waiting for was a spark from the overhead lights. The one in the video will be buried behind sheetrock on both sides and the homeowners will never know about it and think something died in their walls when it fails.
