Oh yeah, you know them sneaky ones will try to get yah! Especially shops that change oil for cheap. Lure in the folks who don't even change their own oil and get 'em with other simple fixes. Thanks Steve!

Lol!! You had one of them? It used to be simple but at the same time, you didn't know what was wrong back then if you didn't know cars but now these scanners tell you what's wrong and how to fix it so in a sense it is better that they are more complicated with sensors. Thanks for watching :)

Stand alone unit is much better than the one I have which need to use with a SMART phone.

I have an old stand alone one but it doesn't have much functions. Still good but this one out performs it. You got one of them dongle units that connects to your phone via an app? Those are good too!

Owning a scanner is cool and can come in handy at times but around here Most Parts stores Like Advanced Auto, NAPA , AutoZone, O'Reilly's etc will scan your vehicle free of charge. And most times a "Check Engine" light comes on for some ignorant reasons, like a loose fuel cap or the misreading on a sensor etc ( seriously ) Most times simply unhooking the Negative battery cable will clear that Ck Eng light and it never comes back on IF it should return fairly quick you need to get it scanned to know the cause, could be a bad O2 sensor etc that needs replaced But if other places are doing it free , there you go...LOL

Yes, most auto parts stores will check it for free but not immediately. You will need to stand in line first and then when they are not busy they come and read it. They also do it in the hope you buy the parts from them. You need to shop around and most of the times parts from online is a lot less expensive. Even a cheap code reader is worth every penny. O2 sensors are the culprit for the check engine light on an aging car mostly and a cheap code reader will point to it but things like the transmission relay switch may not or the evap system.
