What does a normal equine gastrointestinal microbiome look like? Nobody knows for sure, but Purina horse nutrition experts are getting close to an answer! The Purina® Microbiome Quotient™ Equine Project will help deepen our understanding of the equine microbiome.
This is the largest study of its kind ever to be conducted. Team Purina has already collected more than 3,000 fecal swabs for its expanding microbiome library, and they’ve spent more than a year in the lab extracting, sequencing, and mining through the data.
In this fascinating 30-minute discussion with Purina experts Dr. Kelly Vineyard, Dr. Karen Davison, Dr. Robert Jacobs and Morghan Bowman, MS, equine microbiome scientist, you’ll better understand what’s happening in your horse’s gut.
The microbiome is composed of tens of thousands of unique microorganisms. In fact, there are more microorganisms in your horse’s gut than there are cells in its entire body! These tiny microorganisms play a big role in your horse nutrition and health. They protect your horse from pathogens, break down food to release energy and help maintain optimal immune function and gut health.
Uncovering how different factors influence the health of the microbiome is key to future equine nutrition research and innovations. Collecting new samples will help Purina experts discover how age, breed, living conditions, activity level, diet and more influence a horse’s microbiome.
