How to lace shoes with “Checkerboard Lacing”, in which one color shoelace snakes through the eyelets horizontally, then another color shoelace is woven through vertically, forming an attractive two-color checkerboard pattern. Best with wide, flat shoelaces.

Thanks, Ian! This lacing is certainly beautiful, but I wonder how secure and practical it would be if tied on a pair of shoes that are worn regularly?

With the ends simply tucked, it's not very secure. Anchoring the ends does help. If you want security, you could lace with regular “Straight Bar Lacing” - which ties across the top - then only run the 2nd color shoelace through all the rows except the top row. Finally, you could also consider elastic shoelaces like U-Lace for the horizontals, giving security plus allowing much easier slip-on/off.

This is old school, a break dancing trend back in the day. Always wanted to learn how to do this. The first lace he did was the main style of the 80’s hip hop shoe game.

What length of laces do you recommend to achieve this?
