It is vitally important, (you'll have to excuse that joke) that medical students can accurately record patient observations
In order to be able to assess a patient, you need to be able to comment on the critical status of those in your care which involves being able to accurately assess a patient's observations
All students must be able to rapidly, and effectively recorded patients, blood pressure, their pulse, their respiratory rate, and their temperature. All of this information must be clearly recorded on the patient's observations, or MEWS chart
You can now consult via video or in person with Dr Gill at Dr Finlay’s Private Practice - www.drfinlays.co.uk/services/...
00:00 - Introduction
00:10 - Vital Signs Check Overview
00:29 - Starting with Pulse and Oxygen Saturation
01:08 - Respiratory Rate and Pulse Rate
01:44 - Blood Pressure Measurement

@HoolyDooly-si2zz 1) I don't think he does. Only if you compare him to maybe his oldest videos (and that's like a decade ago), and even then, I wouldn't agree. 2) he is the father of a baby. That tends to be quite a stressful time for the parents.

Always enjoy these types of videos. Also hardest place I had to take someone's vitals was the high of a very busy freeway during a ride along if I learned how to do it visually I would have done that instead of trying for 5 minutes to get a BP.

I always have to chuckle in advance when they check my vitals before giving blood because I have deep veins so it usually takes a second for them to find mine to check my pulse as a result. I will say though that I thoroughly enjoy having my blood pressure records from all of my appointments because high blood pressure runs in my family but my readings have always been really good when giving blood except for more recently I’ve had a few that were high and the Red Cross actually sent me a letter alerting me to be cautious about them which was nice. They were related to work stress from certain people at work and not actually medical in cause and thankfully those people are no longer employed at my work but if it happens outside of that I’ll definitely look into it again.

This might be a silly question, but how are you counting the pulse... beats, I guess, for 15 seconds without a clock or something to keep track of the time passed? I tried it and failed horribly, because a) I don't know how long 15 seconds is and b) I can't count two different things at the same time xD (Plus you're ALSO counting the breaths?? That just seems impossible...)

Resp rate should be checked for 1 minute, not 15 secs then x 4. All nurses know the importance of this.
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 4 ай бұрын
All the electronic monitoring will calculate BPM, and rest with 15 seconds of date. There is not need to count for 1 minute, as the pulse will change over that time. Potentially even being artificially elevated as the patient knows they are being observed
@YTuberosity
@YTuberosity 4 ай бұрын
I was talking about RR - although in healthy individuals you can easily do 15 secs x 4 - getting people into the habit of doing a full minute will obviously show periods of apnoea etc. that might otherwise be missed. @@DrJamesGill
