Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Finnish Brutality 2021 is going to be a tough match in the best case. But I will be running it in a 1940 uniform, with a Mosin. A Finnish M39 Mosin, sure, but still a Mosin. That means that I have a lot of things already working against me, and the last thing I want is to have the rifle not shooting to point of aim on top of everything else. So today I'm taking my M39 out to the range to test out a variety of ammunition.
The M39 sights are nicely adjustable for windage, but elevation is a fixed scale - so I need to find a brand/loading that hits at the 150m battle sight setting without needing to hold over or under. The Finns used a 200 grain projectile, so I dug up several loading around that weight - 200gr Wolf, 204 gr mystery ammo, and 206gr Bernaul. Then I also brought some Czech 148gr light ball, Wolf 174 gr, and lastly PPU 182 gr "Match".
Rather to my surprise, the PPU was dead on, as was the Czech 148gr ball. The PPU also made the best groups, and didn't cause any sticking go the bolt (which the Czech ammo did). So, that's what I will be planning to source for the match!

This, also the fact that the front post is available in different heights to fit various rifles. The taller ones (if all else being equal means lower POI) tend to have been scrounged up by people who are not into handloading and ground down until a satisfactory result is acheived. I'm pretty sure the arsenal stocks of front sight posts have all but dried up nowadays. In Finland the perhaps most common Mosin load is Sako's factory "7,62x53R Range" load which is an .308 (not .310) 8g/123gr FMJ load for, surprise surprise, shooting range applications.

Before the Second Great Ammo Dearth, you could get the PPU Match ammo for about $0.80 - $1 a round plus shipping. Standard commercial LB and HB ran about half that, and surplus was around $0.30 - $0.35 a round, sometimes less if you could find a good deal. Currently, surplus and commercial LB and HB have stabilized and are running $0.50 or more. This match ammo runs between $0.85 and $1.40 + shipping and tax. Fortunately, most folks are focused on 9mm and 5.56. Expensive is a highly subjective term.

@farmerbrown84
@farmerbrown84 3 жыл бұрын
Two things - 1. cold ammo = much lower velocity (which isn't a real issue at short ranges - say, under 500m). If really cold, there could be patchy ignition and burn. 2. Long range, the air is cold and dense, so the bullets do not fly as well, although it takes quite a bit of distance to start to see the difference (and a much more accurate rifle than a Mosin M39).

I am a finnish hunter and we use to keep our ammo inside of jacket. If you use finnish ammo like SAKO or Lapua or swedish Norma it's not big a proplem but with many other brand can velocity drop much. temperature is one reason why finnish army developed hotter smg ammo. Even modern handguns can not handle that ammo.
@connorcampbell5274
@connorcampbell5274 3 жыл бұрын
Yes on two fronts. Not only is the air denser, thus slowing the bullet faster, but powder is generally pretty temperature sensitive. Unsurprisingly, European powders like, say Vihta Vuori make an effort to be as little temperature sensitive as possible.
