I brought $9500 USD with me on my trip to the Urals that I am still currently on. I found that most currency exchanges in Russia only want mint US currency, and the old 100 US dollar bills will not be accepted at most places. However, Sberbank accepted all my non mint / old bills, but they bought them at about 2-3 rubles less than the other exchanges. I was also able to get a MIR card, but it is a much longer process for US citizens. I had to first get my passport translated to Russian then I had to get it notarized before I could open a bank account. And exchanging in Tallinn for Russian rubles was the worst rate I seen, even worse than the rate at the Saint Petersburg airport but not by much. I highly recommend to avoid exchanging in Tallinn, and airports, or less absolutely necessary, and in only small amounts.
