Cheese Cave Install Part 3: Insulation and Vents

We have been working hard on the cheese cave to get it ready before winter! Added two inch foam and dirt as insulation, and vent pipes for intake and exhaust air. Broadcast seed and hope to get it to take root over the next few weeks before we get freezing temperatures. Next steps will be putting in steps and cutting in door! Thanks for visiting!

I think that would also make for a great tornado shelter…not that you have them in your part of the country. Maybe throw some flower seeds on top in the spring🌼🌸🤓

If we lived somewhere that got tornados, we could have bought a pre-fab shelter with stairs and a door and used that as a cheese cave. Thankfully we live in an are that requires us to do all this extra work.

Perhaps you should cap the vent pipes with a couple of facsimiles of plastic cheese wedges styled after the Wisconsin headgear. Keep up the great work.

Fascinated as allways watching your projects on the farm. Did your cat lose a leg ? I couldnt help but notice it didn't have a back leg. Doesn't seem to worry her though.

Yeah, Mr. Spud only has 3 legs. He came to us that way. Doesn’t slow him down though. Still an excellent hunter.

I have a question, actually several. First your stanchion how wide are they? I’m going to have to modify my ground level and not sure how wide I need.

What an I missing? The air inlet pipe was supposed to precool the inlet air by being in contact with the ground. But then you built an insultion box around it. Color me confused.

It was something we struggled with too. We added the insulation due to the pipe being in close proximity to the surface of the mound (the 2” of insulation simulates approximately 12” of earth) and it was sealed the top with tyvek tape, but we did leave the bottom in-sealed. We felt it was the best compromise under the circumstances. Regardless, it should be better than just bringing the pipe out straight up. Thanks for watching!
