Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.is the co-author of The Pleasure Trap available here:
www.amazon.com/dp/1570671974?...
Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.
Dr Lisle is available at selected days and times for a one-to-one, personal phone consultation:

Wow! Thank you so much for addressing a problem/issue that me and all of my women friends in their 50s, 60s and beyond suffer from - I am finally able to see clearly that sex drive is due to evolutionary psychology factors and not “the woman’s fault.” Negotiating he conflict of interest is truly the answer. So grateful for Dr. Lisle’s wisdom and ability to share in a way that is fair and true,

The whole show was well worth the watch. The first part where he covers calorie density, weight loss, and the shortcomings of using the scale in determining the success or failure of what we are eating was especially noteworthy and helpful. The devil is always in the details! Things are not always as they seem!

Lots of good points to know from Dr. Lisle. Since following the Starch Solution since February 2023 my weight is down to where l need to be and l am happy and maintaining. Learning all the great recipes and guest speakers on Chef AJ's podcasts is a bonus. It's like an addition to the starch way of eating; all good natural healthy human foods. There seem to be endless good eats out there that plant base followers are sharing which is amazing to me. It has opened my eyes wide for sure. I know others will find you all as l have. KZfaq is huge and your words are getting out there. Keep doing what you do everyday. More and more folks will find the plant base world and be onboard

My husband has experienced a lessening of libido as well as we have aged (in our mid 60’s) thank god lol! We both still have libido but his is definitely less than it was when he was young! I wonder if the reports of super libido among old guys is exaggerated lol! Mayo Clinic says: “It's natural for men to notice a gradual decrease in sex drive (libido) as they age. The degree of this decline varies. But most men maintain at least some amount of sexual interest into their 60s and 70s.“ I think we have menopause because there is a societal advantage to having the less aggressive females to live a long time but estrogen exposure for that long has problems. Without the cooperative and non aggressive traits of females the human race will be wiped out. The whole point of view of evolutionary advantage as pertaining strictly to individuals is somewhat patriarchal. The fact is individual survival depends on the overall societal survival and the complex web of interdependent individuals. The pleasure of the male penis has led to an exaggeration of the importance of the factor of the male sex drive in our theories of evolutionary advantage. Another point is that older women enjoy sexual activity outside of intercourse! Romance and intimacy continue to get stronger and more refined as we age. The process of social evolution is ongoing and individual mental development continues throughout the lifespan. In other words, if you keep an open mind, sexuality can continue to grow and develop in a refined and subtle manner as we age. In fact there are cultures who include sexuality in their spiritual practices. Believe it or not, reproduction is but one function of sexuality. To view sexuality as only for the purpose of reproduction is a limited view- and a kind of fundamentalist religious one too. It’s good to remember that these theories of evolution are theoretical. I’m sure our current understanding will be viewed as quite primitive when looked back on in day 10,000 years.

For that 1st question. I would actually say she shouldn't eat too low of calorie density. Based on my own experience and reading a lot of comments ppl really struggle with the 50/50 plate. They get too hungry and binge. That was my experience. I was eating pretty much as much as I wanted but doing MWL but couldn't figure out why I wanted to binge on junk (and did sometimes). Well i tracked my calories for a few days and was only getting 1400! No wonder i wanted to binge! I'm a man working a physical job. When i started just having a little fruit and /or a little veg with my starch meals it was MUCH EASIER to stick to and the weight loss still happened. Now ya of course you might hit a point where you need to start adding some more fruits and veg to bring the calorie density down some more. But I say ppl doing this should NOT jump right to a 50 50 plate. Just do what mcdougall says and keep your plate 90% starch at 1st. I also notice if I use BBQ sauce or put brown sugar in my oatmeal I eat a lot more of it. I hit satiety so much faster when I don't put salt and sugar on my food.

Now I feel full and satisfied and have almost no cravings. That said you should eat some veggies. They are good for you. But don't try to fill yourself up with veggies. You really do need the starch. I'm sure there's some ppl that need to stuff themselves with veggies but most ppl will do fine just doing what mcdougall says and focus on most of the plate being starches. "A starched based diet with the addition of some fruits and vegetables." That's all you need to do diet wise.

Loved the discussion (facts) concerning focus on the scale to gauge success or “failure”…I’ve thought weight can turn into an ego thing and a comparison dilemma. Enjoyed this interview immensely.

I was ego-trapped a lot growing up with regard to school grades and for decades i was an all-or-nothing person when it came to my diet, I either starved myself (and became obsessed with food) or binged. What has kept me slim and on track for over 4 years with no relapses is that I keep my environment very clean and I love my meals, so I don't feel I'm missing out at all. I am not a great cook, but I learnt to make simple, delicious meals that are filling and satisfying. I use this base for many of my dishes, whether soups or stews or casseroles or sautee dishes: chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic and basil or other fresh/dried herbs. I use this base for mushrooms, beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc. I do not use any added oil or sugar although I salt my potatoes and use crumbled veggie stock cube at table, never during cooking (this also stops me from tasting food while I'm cooking), I know the will taste good at table once I add a bit of stock cube. So yes, it is possible to be a high achiever like Chef AJ with regard to eating, I have always wanted to be not just average weight, but very slim, I am only happy, look really good in clothes and love my body when I'm very slim - if I'm average weight I still have areas of fat on my body and you can be they're all in the wrong places, so very slim is better for me. I have escaped the pleasure trap because I just adore everything I eat and I eat a lot (probably 10lbs of food a day to feel satiated, though I may reduce this in future if my lifestyle changes). I don't count calories but I don't think I could get away with eating more than 1,500 a day because I am very petite (5ft) and don't have an active lifestyle, I am 58 and don't have an active job either. I know I am doing something right because I have maintained my ideal weight and all blood tests, etc. are perfect according to my doctor. My mental health has benefited so much and I consider having achieved my happy weight and overcome disordered eating as a much greater achievement in life than getting top grades at school.

I agree with most but not some of the parenting part. I stopped giving my girls so much dairy (my family won't do my plant based diet) and my older daughter was the last of her friends to start her period and she was only 12. My 10 year old now is one of the last girls in her class to not have it. Also, the social influence of early sexuality wasn't mentioned due to social media and apps like TikTok and it is huge. Bottom line is that parenting these days is hard. I hope I can make it!

Very interesting content. Was a little disappointed that the doc seemed to imply females do not accurately state their menstruation onset. Of course varies by continent and ethnicity. In my family we three daughters started at 14 and 15. That is just as 'normal' as lower ages. Early menstruation in the west has been associated with biological reaction to loss of the male parent in the home and other factors. Thank you for introducing this topic.

Sounds like the last questioner has double standards: insists on her food in their houses but won’t accept their food in her house. Would be more reasonable to allow them to bring their food to your place (and take any leftovers away) but refrain from eating it yourself.

I must say I started my period at 12 years old, my food intake back then was mainly vegetable based with a small amount of animal flesh...this was in 1985, from what I remember I didn't drink much milk or eat much cheese so yes it seems from Dr Dougs info that I was simply set to get my period at that time

I like and respect Dr Lisle a lot, but I can assure you and the lady who enquired about overeating on the 50-50 plate that you very much CAN overeat starches and put on more than the average couple of pounds a year of fat. Dr Lisle has probably never binged and is not a petite post-menopausal woman like I am. I can easily overeat and put on lots of weight by eating potatoes (oil-free), legumes, oats, rice and other wholegrains, etc. even though they're all foods to the left of the red line. I can put on stones of fat a year by bingeing on wholefoods. in 2020 I finally lost weight and achieved my long-desired slim figure, which I have maintained on this wonderful very low fat WFPB way of eating. However 99% of what I eat is very low calorie dense, definitely to the left of the red line (a lot to the left), it's mainly fruit, veggies (lots of soups, salads with greens), winter squashes (kabocha), mushrooms and starchy veggies (beetroot, celeriac, Jerusalem artichokes). I eat the following on average twice a week: potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentils, beans, chickpeas, chestnuts (my starches). Other starches I haven't ventured to eat in 4 years, I will eventually reintroduce them into my diet starting with small amounts, at the moment though I am very happy with my slim weight (my happy weight) and, being a volume eater, I'd rather have two pounds of fruit or veggie soup than one pound of rice or lentils. The other thing that most lifestyle doctors (usually male and much taller than my 5 ft) fail to mention is that we women need hundreds fewer calories a day, they can happily eat a lovely beans and lentil stew, I would have to make this stew mainly vegetables, choose between beans and lentils, not both, or use much smaller amounts, or replace the lentils with riced cauliflower. If I ate what is perfectly fine for a tall, active man, I would put on weight and the scales would not be lying. By the way i still think it is useful to weigh myself daily, I understand weight fluctuations so they do not unduly affect me, but this remains the most reliable way of monitoring my weight in the home.

Whole wheat pasta should be fine, careful with brown pasta, it might just be colored brown like they do with bread sometimes. Not everyone gains weight on whole wheat pasta, some do, some don't, would have to try it out for yourself.
