I remember in 97 when Tom and Ed were making Dig You Own Hole in South London and doing the Heavenly Social at Turnmills, and they’d make a track and then bring an acetate to play at the club. The Private Psychedelic Reel was one such track… Hearing that hot off the press, so to speak… absolute mayhem! Love this breakdown of another epic… superb work. You are a genius!

That was fantastic! Watching you do this with tunes that I "know" backwards (yet don't...) is such an eye opener. I have read through the comments here and the suggestions/requests are spot on! (I reckon we could throw one hell of a party lol) I don't think anyone has asked for FSOL Future Sound of London so I will add that one. Most of the tracks that come into my head are nowhere near as "chewy" as what you have now tackled, do tracks that really grab you and if you feel any burnout, backpeddle. We all seem to love this but we are voracious... 😜👍🎶
@GyuBeats
@GyuBeats 2 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks a million. One hell of a party - that would be cool hey? Something to think about... I hope you're joking about FSOL! 😂😂😂 So many requests - it's one I'm 100% into doing though - I even ordered a record from Germany to get an acapella for one of the vocal samples. Watch this space!
@jakartausm5241
@jakartausm5241 Жыл бұрын
FSOL? Good luck with that! ISDN from what I recall has an element of random samples/pieces thrown in… randomly. Forgive the tautology. Lifeforms blew my mind when I first heard it. Sounds like nothing I’d heard before. And so fleeting with the musical ideas. Just as you think this could be developed it moves onto something else yet they can take Cascade or Lifeforms (the track) and make half a dozen versions that stand as an LP in its own right. The water drumming in Lifeforms pt1 is extraordinary. I adore The Sunshine Underground but Dougan and Cobain are sound architects on a different plane. The Environments series was/is the only place they could go from there.

This is such a cool way to explore this incredible track! You mentioned wanting some advice on how to maybe get those string pads at 6:03 to sound closer to the original, and one quick way to do that would be to automate the levels of the chords so that they swell from quiet to loud. Also, it sounds to me like the lower notes (maybe just the fundamentals) of the chords are synthesized voices from something like a Roland VP-330 (which is also an excellent string synth). I think combining those lower vocal notes with the upper notes of your string patch with more of a volume swell would get you really close. KVR makes a plug-in version of the VP-330 called the VSP-330, and Behringer's VC-340 clone sounds almost identical to the original. I've never used KVR's plug-in, but I have a VC-340, and it's great. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to make this! PS - I think the absolutely mindblowing synth sound that they also used on We Are the Night is actually an EMS VCS 3. It might have been run through a Sherman Filterbank to dirty it up a bit, but that synth can sound mighty gnarly on its own. If they did run it through an effect though, I think it was most likely the Thermionic Culture Vulture that they love and use a lot.
@dobanyi

Yeah i was gonna write something like this, plus i think there is a "shimmer" reverb on that pad. One that has the echoes pitched up +12 semitones. Valhalla makes one, or you can use Crystalizer from soundtoys. I think i hear that pitch shifting thing in there. (or maybe just an eventide harmonizer blended in) But definitely a fade in with either lowpass or just volume. You need to sample it or automate it though, so you don't have the ringing out of the reverb.

I did a festival in Joshua Tree in 2021, and I did a cover version of Let Forever Be with me doing live vocal harmonies with myself. People freaked out. Something I did alot, and something you might want to check out for recreating that "sample mojo" for stuff that you just can't find and have to recreate with softsynths is to bounce your sample to cassette and bring it back in the box. You can slam the tape if you need compression or drive, but any way you do it, it really gives some life to VST samples and makes them sit in the mix and feel more "vintage," so to speak. Keep in mind that you may have to tweak the timing and do some minor warping once it's back in the box, depending on the quality of tape deck you use to do it. The Chemicals were my go to electronica in the 90's.

If you want another challenge … that might open up a new direction for some of your Subscribers …you could break down a lesser known track with D+B elements … Seb Taylor’s (AKA Digitalis) “Dr Sembei” from the album “The Third State” … it swirls around with an interesting diverse array of sounds …. looks quite complicated ? … but accessible to someone of your ability, I reckon.

I will always say that the Chemical Brothers were the spiritual successors of Led Zeppelin within electronica. I know more people would say that they are closer to the Beatles because of Setting Sun or their Noel Gallagher collaborations, but the reason I say Zeppelin is cause Chem Bros had so many esoteric Eastern influences, big beats, was a great stadium act, and is highly underrated compared to overrated acts like Daft Punk.

Sounds really good. You asked about the chord theory on the strings in the intro. I haven't tested that part myself but a common trick for the 60s psycadelic sound is to use the Mixolydian mode. Aka usually the 7th in an A major is Ab but in Mixolydian it would be G. You could try adding a subtle G note in the chord for a more "far out" voicing... The tomorrow never knows cover the chemical brothers always use as a live intro uses the Mixolydian mode.

29:36 As an electric guitarist, I can tell you that's playing with the speed of a tremelo. Probably the 'Vibrato' (that's tremelo) in his Fender amp (where the overdrive is also from). In other words: modulation of volume. It's simply that. I think it's just the sampled, played twice as fast (or thereabouts).
