Today I perform the Chemical Chameleon (sometimes misnamed the Chemical Traffic Light) demonstration. This is the oxidation-reduction reaction between sucrose and potassium permanganate under basic conditions, and is commonly performed in lower level chemistry classes.

Every time someone mentions something that's "commonly done in chemistry classes" I just cry because all we did was balance equations for an entire year. Chemistry classes must have been cool back in the day. we had a $20 supply fee and the only thing we ever saw was a combustion reaction, in a fume hood, across the room, with 3 different classes crammed together out in the hallway because they could "only do it 1 time" I didn't even see it ;-;

I watched your video and I liked it very much! I've been searching for a cool experiment that I can do at home...and here it is! I'm really surprised to see that you have only around 500 subscribers! That is why I subscribed! Also pls continue making such amazing videos!

Would this be a good way to make a small bit of pure manganese dioxide? Or would there be too many contaminates from the solution?

Cool reaction and cool video! I'm wondering what would have happened if you performed the reaction in a graduated cylinder or some other long piece of glassware. Maybe it could increase the cool color banding effect that you got when it was performed in the small vial

That's a great idea! Maybe I'll give it a shot in the future

so I have to do this for a science experiment tom in school. Can I make a large quantity of solution A, store it in a bottle and take it to school? like will the reaction work? and will it be safe?

isn't sucrose a non-reducing sugar? how did it work?
@zahraadbouk8022
@zahraadbouk8022 Жыл бұрын
Nice question. Sucrose is made up of fructose and glucose which are non-reducing butt these monosaccharides are linked in a cyclic structure by an a-glycosidic bond in sucrose which made it reducing agent. And this idea was explained at the beginning of the video he made . ❤
