Hello John, Thanks for another informative video. I noticed that you did not rinse the "silver black" in water like the liver of sulfur. Is there really no need? And, do you recommend wax afterward for the shine?

Hi Bruce, The OJA filming studio does not allow me to truly work the way I normally do. I would recommend that you always clean your brushes after using them. That way you don't contaminate any products or projects in your work area. The Silver Black chemical is a diluted acid material that can damage tissue. So, you do need to work carefully and clean up any tools or messes. I tend to apply a very slight texture to areas that I darken on my work (so that they remain dark longer). And, if I want them to appear shiny, I will coat the area with a microcrystalline wax and lightly buff them by hand. Good luck with your creative projects. Thanks for your support! : )

Hello again, I had purchased some Sterling Silver wire around 5 or 6 years ago but never have used it. Now that I am working with wire I went to take it out of the bag it was in and found that it tarnished quite a bit. I've tried bringing the SS back to life, but have not had any success. Do you have any suggestion on how to 1. test to make sure it is SS, 2: How do I polish the wire to bring it back to it's shine?

+Gloria Borrero Hi Gloria, You would have to take a sample of the wire to a refiner or other professional who could test it for you. Removing the tarnish can be done in a number of ways. The easiest way is to line your kitchen sink with aluminum foil, put some hot water in it, add about some baking soda, and let it soak until the tarnish is transferred to the foil. Some people like to add salt and vinegar to the solution too. Happy cleaning. Thanks for watching! : )

It’s less expensive than using the silver black. And, you don’t have to carefully brush anything on to your jewelry. Hope this helps. 😀

The material used to oxidize the silver pendant in the video is named "Silver Black". It is sold by most jewelry suppliers. Or, they sell a version of this product. You can also use Liver of Sulfur or egg whites to oxidize silver. The OJA has video tutorials on all of these techniques. : )

thank you .. i always learn a dozen or more new things in your videos and 90% of the time I know I'll find a video of yours when I do a search for a technique! I was wondering if this silver black would rub off after a while of wearing? if so, is there anything that can be used to seal it in for longer? Also would this silver black liquid make gold leaf turn black? eg: i have silver jewelry with gold leaf on it made using Kuem Boo technique

Hi Allen, The oxidation created through the application of Silver Black will stay put on a piece. If you want it to stay really dark for a long time, just coat it with a little bees wax. It should not turn the gold foil that you used on your Kuem Boo piece black. Normally, people use liver of sulfur on Kuem Boo. Good luck with your projects. Thanks for your support! : )

The best way to turn gold of any color black is to have a professional plater plate it with black rhodium. I don't know how you would turn white gold a shade of dark blue. Gun bluing that is used for steel might color it a little. But, I've never tried it and I'm not sure it will do anything. If you want dramatic color why bother messing with gold at all? Hi, Ive made my first ever mokume gane ring from fine silver and Stirling Silver. What solution would you recommend to bring out the grain? Ive tried with eggs in a bag but the results were pretty poor. I then tried bleach, and although it brought out the grain, it also turned the silver an off colour too. What solution would you recommend to colour the Stirling, but won't colour the fine? Please help :)

Hi Joe, To achieve good color contrast with mokume gane you need to use metal bodies with different colors. For example, jewelers often use combinations such as brass, copper and silver or white, rose and yellow gold. The metals that you chose are simply too close in color to show any contrast. You need to try using metals that respond differently to the same patina. Thanks for your support! : )

I’m trying to find a way to permanently oxidize my Sterling bar link chain. A day of normal wear makes it shiny again. What should I do?

Oxidation will build up over time naturally. It will also rub off naturally too. There is no way to keep your chain black. Even paint will wear off eventually. 😀

The best way to immediately oxidize a silver surface is to use a chemical oxidizer. But, it will take time for a very dark black to develop. The whites of hard boiled eggs can be used to fumigate silver to turn it black. Remember, this only works on sterling silver; not on Argentium silver. 😀

Both chemical oxidation and that which is accomplished using egg whites in a fumigation chamber can be removed by heating your piece with a torch. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi I've bought a .925 pendant that came already oxidized and has this gun metal greyish appearance but I want to make it darker closer to black. Would this work to get it from metal grey to black? or should I use liver of sulfur to further blacken it?

Either approach would work. But chemical oxidation would produce a darker shade and not wear off as quickly. Generally, you need to lightly anneal a piece, pickle and brass brush it before a new patina process will work. Good luck! 🍀

@@chucky7399 Brass brushing could affect the surface finish. Just make sure to pickle the piece really well after annealing it.

Do I just keep adding patina and keep rinsing the ring until it gets to a nice dark black or am I stuck with this grey colour? Thanks.

The silver might get darker with repeated applications, but it will eventually even out to a grey.

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy see that’s where the platinol is better for me, I have this ring and it has fine details in it that I like to turn black, it also has an onyx stone in it so I can’t exactly put the whole ring in something unfortunately.

The "silver black" chemical used in the video was purchased online from an American jewelry supply company. But, you can darken silver by putting the piece in a closed container with the whites of a hard boiled egg too. Good luck with your creative pursuits. Thanks for your support! : )

I think toned coins look cool and I see these artificially toned vibrant read/blue coins on eBay? How do they do that? Hey JJ, Manufacturers color metals like that with either nano ceramic e-coating or titanium color plating. Both processes require specialized equipment and materials. I'm sure that you can find videos on these processes on other channels. 😀

You can achieve an overall darkening of your silver pieces with a hardboiled egg. The OJA has two videos on that topic. Not knowing what chemicals are available to you in your part of the world, I suggest that you consult with a jewelry manufacturer in your area to find out what they use that is similar.
