The Romanian blouse, also called “ie”, is probably the most emblematic piece of Romanian folklore and artistic expression. It goes far back, all the way to the Antiquity, where some similar designs appear on the figures enacting Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars on Trajan’s Column in Rome. Made in linen, cotton or silk, it is embellished with embroideries of geometrical and floral patterns that depend on the region, such as circles and crosses, flowers and butterflies, sometimes even sequins around the neckline, on the front and the sleeves. Each pattern has a meaning; fertility, war, love, fragility, power and faith. For instance, trees stand for wisdom and life while sunflowers represent the sun, a symbol of God and prosperity. And so, when a Romanian woman is embroidering her blouse, she knows exactly what she wants to say, and each blouse tells its own story. In the past, the blouses used to indicate the age, social and marital status; Young and unwedded girls would wear bright colours while married or older women would wear simple patterns and discrete colours. Today still, there are artisans hidden away in small villages, who carry on their ancestral traditions in making these blouses, by hand, and who continue to pass on this unique know-how to their daughters and granddaughters. In France, the Romanian blouse gained a lot of fame thanks to Henri Matisse’s paintings in the 40’s, inspired by Romanian women: Elvira Popescu, Martha Bibesco, Anna des Noailles and Elena Vacarescu. However, as a fashion item, this blouse goes back much further. Originally, the blouse was worn exclusively by peasant women but towards the mid-19th century, it became popular among the upper class as members of the Romanian royal family, Elisabeth of Romania and later Queen Marie and her daughters, adopted the traditional blouses.

Yo! you are right, the first song ''Colind'' ( translates to ''Christmas Carol'' ) is an old traditional song that these sisters reinterpret acapela and Subcarpati mix these kind of folklore with electro/rap music. The ''Subcarpati'' ( translates to ''Sub-carpatian mountain range'' ) is actually a project that was intened to bring back folklore to mainstream media and they called it ''Underground-Folklore''. The discussion here can be extended because after 89', romanians I feel like are in a search for their identity as a nation ( not that it is not there, but it faded in people's minds while under the communism regime ) and this project, Subcarpati, unites romanians in a way no other music band has done before. Really glad you enjoy our music ( surprising as these kind of beats and rythms are traditional and may not appeal to foreign people just as well ).

What those women sing is deep Romanian folklore music, is as old as it gets. It represents 100’s if not 1000’s of year of culture, of musical culture. This is what humans use to get high 100’s of years ago, singing this music and dancing and rotating in circles to archive deeper states of consciousness, perhaps not intentionally, more like an innate human need to reach a different state of mind, is sort of the equivalent of tribal music in countries like those in Africa or tribes in the Amazon jungle. I’m proud of my roots and the rich cultural background that we have as nation. Unfortunately, our culture has been hijacked by lots of garbage artists and by media. The positive thing is that we still have artists like these guys, that were able to recognise the value of our musical and cultural history and bring it back to life. It’s also great that people like you are able to recognise and appreciate musical quality and the dope ness of these artists.

Couldn't have said it better, Aby! It's a bit sad that a lot of Romanians don't know that the actual space is one of the oldest establishments and that the land itself holds a lot of spiritual power. Thank you for sharing the above - as I've often felt a deep connection with similar rituals in Africa and South America, as you've mentioned.

Yes, they are sisters in real life too. Exceptional singers from Moldova. Known way more back in the days, but people forgot them for a period of time. The first featuring with them to appear on a videoclip was with Zdob & Zdub (moldavian folk rock band) some years ago. The traditional shirt is called "ie" (it's read like "ye" from english). What they wear is the traditional clothing from the North-East (thank you @Marinela Lungu) Romania (including our brothers from Moldova). Every part of the country has its unique style of embroidery due to the influence they had across time.

They are from Moldova based on their traditional costume, in Romania each region has different costume, different motives and different colors are used, the shirt is called "ie" the skirts and the stuff over the skirts i believe they have different names, based on the region. It's indeed a mix of traditional music and of course Subcarpați beats. Few romanian bands are actually doing this types of mixes. It's uniqueness gives me chills. Yah, even for us sometimes it's too deep. Everytime I listen I imagine the mountains and the amazing Romania. Our childhood , actually. The fresh air, the smell of grass. Heaven. Here in London quite hard to have some fresh air 😅 The traditional blouse it's called ' Ie" and it's usually handmade. 💙 Thanks for your appreciation. This is the way they used to sing in times of old, this style of singing has been passed down through the centuries from generation to generation and it may even be traced back to the Dacian people and the last part that the sisters sing is them talking to a wolf, the wolf being the guardian animal of the Dacian people, their war banner being a wolf’s head. And I think the word to describe the sisters singing is Mystical as is the Romanian country.

The youtube algorithm randomly recommended this, and I must say that as a Romanian in the UK, it is lovely to see british people interested in eastern folklore. Although Subcarpati is not a folk band, they bring archaic, folk music into the 21st century with their musical arrangement.

Its really a big difference for you and those who are not Romanians to listen to this music. For us, its not only a traditional music but we feel it in out hearts, we feel all our landscapes and village life and family and all the traditions in our country❤ 🇷🇴

This is more as a ritualic song, imagine that you lived approximatively 100 years ago and you are going to fight, to defend your village or country, and women would have sung this to cheer the lads and to express their feelings. How do you you think you'll do, in the fight? This is José Mourinho, on glory days at half time in the locker room, explaining to the team how they will crush their opponent. :)
