Chemo Tips- Fasting Before Infusions Has Really Helped Me!

Can fasting the day before your chemo infusion help reduce the side effects? For me fasting has made a big difference- reducing the duration and the severity of the post-chemotherapy misery. I am receiving Taxotere (Docetaxel) for prostate cancer- your situation is likely different and you should consult with your doctor before trying out pre-infusion fasting. Here is info about the Mayo Clinic Clinical Trials testing out various fasts before chemo infusions-
clinicaltrials...
And another clinical trial study- www.ncbi.nlm.n...

Fasting is vital. Even the healthiest person should fast sometimes. Starve cancer cells, eat clean, stay away from junk food and processed foods. Keep a positive mindset.

I have read that occasional fasting is good to give the body a chance to do some cleanup that it otherwise never gets the chance to do.

I've just been told I have cancer, I go in on the 22nd of this month (june 2023) for port placement, Dr told me 1 treatment every 3 weeks for 3 months, I have no idea what to expect as at almost 50 years old and NO family support, this terrifies me, the thought of losing my hair scares the crap out of me, I have waist length hair, so to be totally bald, I have no intentions of going outside until my hair grows back, I've already bought a few chemo hats for when I have to go outside, but I am self conscious about my appearance...also my anxiety is going to cause issues with my body, I am a type 2 diabetic, but will try the fasting before my 1st treatment which should be the first week or 2 of July 2023...being told I have cancer, also cancelled my already paid for plane ticket (non refundable) so I lose $1168 I hope I can kick cancers butt....

It is certainly difficult news to receive. At 50 you are still young so you have that going for you. And sorry but I don't have any advice about the hair loss- most of mine left long before chemo so that wasn't an issue I have experience dealing with. And run by your doctor your fasting before chemo plan to make sure it won't be an issue. Stay strong! 💪💪

Wonderful rundown!! I fasted last year before my breast cancer TC chemo treatments (every 3 weeks). I did 48hours pre chemo plus 24 hours after chemo drip was done. I never had nausea, and felt generally very good! FASTING plus 9 CUPS of veg a day and plenty of mineral broth on non fasting days I believe really TRULY made an incredible difference in my health I highly recommend.

Glad to hear it worked so well for you! Good job getting to 72 hours fasting. I was never 100% clear on how long the chemo was actually "active" and killing cells in the body. Eating healthy on non-fasting days is certainly very important, too.

Great video. Thank you for sharing. I know you are CYA when you say "talk to your doctor about fasting", but every account I've heard of talking to the doctor about fasting resulted in the doctor saying fasting was a bad idea because the patient needed to keep up their strength. Hopefully the Mayo clinic study will result in the education of doctors about the benefits of fasting because at this time, most are totally clueless.

Thanks! Change comes slowly to anything medical. Somebody has to try out the new ideas- but nobody wants to be the first one because of the liability. A clinical trial is the only "safe" place to do it.

Putting the body into ketosis seems to be the main thing, so if you can't tolerate a total fast, do a keto diet, i.e. healthful fats, protein, and very few carbohydrates. A quick internet search will give you the basics. Avocados and hard boiled eggs were my best friends the couple of days before, day of, and three days after chemotherapy.

I watched a documentary on fasting and they discussed the positive effects it has on the body, particularly when undergoing chemotherapy. They did a test on rats and the rats that were given chemo and allowed to eat normally all suffered terrible side effects and some died (they were given three times the amount of chemo equivalent to what humans get). And the rats that fasted all showed little or no side effects at all. Pretty powerful results. Other accounts by patients also corroborated this positive effect. The body goes through a state of autophagy where the body "cleans" out dead or damaged cells. The body is so intelligent! Thanks for sharing.

My chemo goes 2 straight days on followed by 2 weeks off.next week will be my 3rd round. I go in every other Tuesday for about 5 hours then every other Thursday I go for about 5-10 minutes to have the ball removed. It looks like a lemon that I have a fanny pack looking thing I carry it in. I also have a chemo port installed in my chest below my left collar bone. That port keeps them from sticking my arms. They also gave me a numbing cream to make being stuck hurt less. So far I like that part of it. I'm limited on what I can eat which for now is basically just mashed potatoes and ramen noodles broken up before they're cooked. I have esophageal cancer. It's been a heck of a ride so far. I also have a hiatal hernia in with all of that and had an inguinal hernia fixed the beginning of October. Definitely not what I wanted for a belated bday present as it was just a week or 2 before I had the surgery. I hope all goes well for you and that everyone going through this survives. Good luck to you sir.

Cancer cells divide 200 times faster than normal body cells and they are hungry. Glucose is what they require. Cut out all sugars and carbs instead of fasting. Keto diet. I did nothing for my first two infusions of Docetaxel and had some bad days after the first infusion. The second was not as bad. Then I cut sugars to expose the cancer cells and shut down my body cells for the third chemo. However, I take Dexamethodone for three days, twice a day, starting the morning of the day before chemo. This has to be taken with food so I do have to eat. I still get side effects though but for the first time I have had tumour reduction and the metastatic are stable. This is my fourth different chemo that had no effect on my cancer and I also had a month of radiation five days a week. Due for another CT next week and hoping there has been further progress.

On FULFIRI I would start to fast about 18 hours before and instead of 3 to 5 day to recover it would be 3 to 5 hours. But I would continue to fast as long as I could which was usually around 72 hours since I had the baxter bottle, plus the majority of the treatment from the hospital has left your system after 48 to 72 hours. But now I am on FOLFOX and it is infused with large amounts of glucose so fasting is pointless before, but I will fast for the next 48 hours afterwards.

@parristx
@parristx 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Elisabeth! If they decide you should have chemo they will only proceed if they think your body can handle it- so don't be too panicked. And they are used to helping chemo patients deal with the side effects so they will be on your side and will work hard to reduce any unpleasantness. Your doctor should go over with you all the possible side effects from chemo. Also- different types of chemo drugs can have different side effects. My biggest worry was that I would be nauseous all the time- but I actually experienced very little of that. My most worrisome side effect was that my white blood cell count went to zero. But they gave me Neulasta and it boosted right back up. My most bothersome side effects were the muscle and joint pain and being exhausted all the time. Chemo really does wear a person down. But then it is done and it becomes a distant memory. So stay strong and know that you are doing the best thing for your long-term health. 💪💪

don't you have to take pills with meals before the infusions, ... how do you deal with it, do you just take them with water

I didn't have any pills to take. They put some things in my IV before they started the chemo flowing each time but because there was no "prep" I was able to do the fasting.

what kind of fasting regimen would you recommend for a daily radiation treatment, lasting for 6 weeks? thank you :)
@parristx
@parristx Жыл бұрын
I think there are probably several factors to consider including where on the body you are having the radiation, time of day of the radiation treatments and what kind of foods you usually eat. If you tell your radiation oncologist you would like to try to reduce the treatment side effects by fasting they might be able to guide you in that. Hope they can help you with some good suggestions.

But what do you do if you have to do chemo every day?
@parristx

Good question. I just have experience with what worked for me and my three-week infusion cycle. There are likely a number of chemo regimes that aren't compatible. Always best to ask the doctor.

For those of us doing IPT or low dose chemo. Fasting beforehand seems like good advice. But we are instructed to eat at the moment of infusion, to help feed the chemo drugs to the cancer cells.

That is a different way of doing things so I am not sure how fasting would fit into that treatment. Always best to ask your doctor.

I did with radiation and had almost no side effects. A slight sunburn and walked every day for 15-20 minutes and I felt better. Its counter intuitive but it worked for me. I had radiation proton targeted radiation for four weeks.

You will have to talk to your doctor to get an answer to that question. But I don't think that being diabetic automatically excludes everyone from fasting.

Good question! As alcohol has calories drinking it does seem to break a fast. They explain it briefly in this article- www.healthline.com/nutrition/intermittent-fasting-and-alcohol#recommendation Unless you mean water/unsweetened tea/coffee/etc... you can have any of those without breaking a fast.

Fasting never helped. Where I had chemo, we always had soup and all kinds of sandwiches and snacks. I had infusion with taxotere myself, with two others drugs. Hope you do well.

Thanks Patricia! Not everybody's body works the same. I saw people at my chemo center getting deliveries of Jimmy John's during their infusions. That seemed pretty wild to me but I won't say I wasn't salivating when the smell of the sandwich wafted my way. 😁 Hope your health is doing well.

You need to look if your chemo is in a saline solution or glucose solution. If it is in glucose than fasting before hand is pointless.

Sir what's you're side effects for docetaxel?
@parristx
@parristx 2 жыл бұрын
The most serious side effect I experienced was my white blood cell count going to zero. I was given Neulasta after each infusion to counteract that. I also developed moderate anemia (low red blood cell count). There were lots of joint and muscle aches. My sense of taste changed and I couldn't bear to eat certain foods anymore. And I lost most of the hair on my head. If you really want to know about the whole experience as I was going through it I recommend my compilation video "My 18 Weeks Of Chemo"- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZZ4epCG2Ja7ops.html

I don’t know about this idea. For someone who’s appetite has decreased and may not be getting enough nutrition to begin with, the thought of fasting for a day or longer could weaken someone even further.
@parristx

I am sure it is not for everyone. But for those who wouldn't be harmed by fasting quite a few people have reported that it helped with their chemo side-effects.
