Sometimes you have your suspicions. Sometimes it is out of the blue. But the day you have test results irrefutably diagnosing you with cancer- there is no way to be prepared for that. In my case it was out of the blue. I had actually turned my health around- switching to a whole foods plant-based diet and losing over 50 pounds. Heart problems had finally got me serious about my health and I managed to turn my condition around with diet and lifestyle changes. I thought, "Wow, I really dodged a bullet." But decades of poor nutrition and poor lifestyle choices had sent more than one bullet my way...
Here is part 2 of my prostate cancer diagnosis- • Prostate Cancer Diagno...

Thank you for telling your story. I have just been going through the same thing. Every symptom I have been experiencing indicates enlarged prostate, so I finally made the appointment 2 weeks ago. High PSA, first Urology appointment last week, retaking the PSA and another appointment in November to go over those numbers. There is just too much waiting involved with this and with this darn internet it gives too much time to read all the stories, some good, some bad. Will be 60 in November but my body has just given out on me with so many things. Arthritis through out my whole body, Essential Tremors, Two Back surgeries, Diabetes 2, Asthma, partial collapsed lung, Real bad Hip pain, Lower back pain, and chest issues. So finding out I may have prostate issues really wasn't a surprise to me. I just figured it was the next thing in line. Anyway...Glad I came across your site as it is nice to be able to hear another persons account of what to expect. I pray that everything is getting better for you. Thanks again, and take care. Going to go watch the part 2of your series now. :)

Hi, we've exchanged before. Thx again for your powerful and immensely valuable videos. Some info from a doctor friend (years ago, may not be reliable):"Stage"- indicates progression and contrary to popular impression, no direct relationship with remission/fix potential (Testicular/penile cancers typically get detected in Stage4 and still quite manageable.) "Prostate C": If a man has to get cancer, then this is less aggressive (compared to, for ex, pancreatic); Most people in US w this will pass away with something else unrelated. Take good care, and best to you and yours.
@parristx

Thanks for the explanation. It is good to have a sense of what one is up against. But it worries me that if someone is told their prognosis is hopeless that it may become a self-fulfilling prophesy because they will in turn have no hope and give up. So I didn't push too hard to have that "Doc, tell it to me straight." conversation.

It's sad that they didn't do a PSA test every two years as is recommended. This is what it's supposed to be for to catch the cancer early. I just had a biopsy after my MRI indicated a Pi-rads 3 (50/50 chance of cancer). This process was started after my PSA results were high compared to two years ago. I wish you the best of luck.
@parristx
@parristx Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. And good luck in whatever treatment course you choose. My doctor and I did discuss the annual PSA testing and that was back when the thinking was that a lot of false positives were causing lots of unnecessary biopsies. But after deciding not to do the test annually it was sort of forgotten for too many years.

It seemed like a cruel irony to me too- but I realized the heart problems and the cancer developed over the same decades of obesity and poor eating. Losing the weight and switching to a whole foods plant-based diet was able to halt and reverse some of the heart damage- can it do the same for the cancer? I feel like I am the sole participant in a science experiment waiting to see.

Digital exam didn’t show any problems, lumps, etc. Dr put me on Dutrasteride in addition to the Tamsulosin that I have been on for a few years. If PSA doesn’t come down or plateau I’m sure it will be time for biopsy.

I don’t understand how your PSA was not done every year . This number should have never been allowed to get that high. I have been getting my PSA for years because it was slowly creeping up. I’m 59 now and I’m scheduled for a biopsy because my PSA went from 4.0 to 4.8 in a year and they noticed a abnormality on my MRI. Hoping for the best

Back 10-15 years ago there was lots of talk about "over testing" and they changed the guidelines for PSA tests in younger men to optional. My doctor suggested not testing yearly and I agreed. I think rescheduling it for every three years or five years or something fell through the cracks. It sounds like they caught your rise in PSA early and I hope everything turns out well for you.

I was diagnosed with 3+4 Gleason score. I got my biopsy sent to Decipher for genomic testing. The results came back as low grade so I am doing active surveillance presently. According to the Decipher test results the chance of my cancer spreading within the next 10 years is 1-2 percent . Just got my yearly MRI which showed no changes .

Wouldn't that be weird if your PSA was waaaay higher before you first tested and all the changes you made like losing weight and eating healthier actually curbed the aggressiveness and when you caught it at 38 and again at 32, you had already prevented a worse situation. Diet and exercise can lower PSA and improve the body's ability to fight cancer. You may have headed off a worse situation unknowingly.

All men will get this they say. My dad weighs 125lbs. Eats bran flakes coffee breakfast. Apples and peanuts snack. Dinner. Grilled meat and veggies. Bread. Popcorn snack. Maybe a candy bar. He's 78 going through this now. So I don't believe diet contributed always. Some men maybe .
@parristx

Sorry to hear your dad is having to deal with this. There are a number of factors that can contribute to cancer developing- both environmental and genetic. You are stuck with your genes but there are lots of things on the environmental side that are within our control. And men eating a typical Western diet have higher prostate cancer rates than men in countries where they eat a more traditional diet. This is a quote from a synopsis of "The China Study"- "Considering all the dietary factors, it’s not surprising that a study that compared prostate cancer rates of men in different countries found that men in China had the lowest advanced prostate cancer rates in the world - one in every 100 000 men - while Chinese-American men living in San Francisco had a rate 19 times as high!" Unhealthy eating is right up there with smoking and drinking as a cancer risk in my mind- so to improve my odds I try to avoid all three.
