Chen Long is one of badmintons most successful men’s singles players.
He won 27 individual titles, was world number 1 for 71 consecutive weeks, won 2 world championships, won 3 Thomas Cup (men’s team world championships) and 5 Sudirman Cup (mixed team world championships) titles, and he medalled at 3 consecutive Olympics, winning Gold in Rio in 2016!
On top of this he changed the way men’s singles was played when he was at his peak!
So with all of this in mind, why is so often overlooked?
Why is Chen Long underrated?
That’s the question I answer in this video.

@@chester0608yehe is nothing compared to Lcw. Olympic and world championship is just another title. Many Chinese players have won it so there is no pressure. If you look at the big picture , not even Lin Dan close to Lcw achievements. Lcw won the most super series. Super series at that time is considered the high price badminton tournament. I am not saying Chen long is a bad player but Lcw is on another Level. Many people might dislike his game play. But in badminton your main focus is just to win.

I think the main reason is that Chen Long is JUST a badminton player. He always follow the rules, always smiles, and is always very kind. He doesn't show that much emotion. Lin Dan on the other hand is the exact oppposite. Yes, he's a badminton player, but he was a rebel in the sport. He wasn't afraid to show when he was angry or upset about something. He's a trendsetter. They are both great, Chen Long is just more introverted. Lionel Messi is also like that, but he has the playing style of Lin Dan.

His nickname was “The Wall” for a reason. He’s simply was a bit overshadowed by LCW and LD success. But when you look at the numbers, it’s a whole different story. He has a 10/9 record against Lin Dan, a 13/15 record against LCW, a 14-6 record against Axelsen, a 3/3 record against Bao Chunlai and a 3-4 record against the monster Chen Jin… He may be underrated in people’s mind, but facts are that he one of the best ever.

How many of those wins were after the prime of those top players (LD / LCW)? CL played against them way past their prime (he's 5-6 years younger), so your stats are skewed. You should lay it out in a year by year basis to make any kind of notable or admissable point.

Exceptional Work Ben. Super excited to know that you will be making more of such content 😁. All though Chen Long Didn't have a flamboyant style compared to his contemporaries. Once people start watching Badminton with a sense of what's going on a match, they tend to appreciate and enjoy tactically astute players with good strategic awareness and Tactical execution. This side of Chen Long was Phenomenonal. A master in neutralising the opponent's attacks and pouncing on opportunities. Chen Long was so precise across different playing conditions, Had a supremely solid basic game and brick like defence, Combined with his physicalty (Hardly ever looked tired) made him such a tough opponent to play against. To gather so many accolades during the same era as of Lin Dan 🇨🇳 Chong Wei 🇲🇾 is quite astonishing. Chen Long was definitely the same league. This is indeed a great tribute to him and much needed one

Thanks for the video! Not sure if anyone else has mentioned in their comments, but another reason Chen Long's reputation among Chinese fans doesn't match his achievements is his team tournament performance. His high-profile losses to players like Kenichi Tago, Son Won Ho, and Momota cost China multiple team trophies, and many fans believe that he was the first to blame in those tournaments. Adding on to this fact is his defensive playing style, which doesn't quite line up with how most people believe team tournaments ought to be played. Still, great video! Very refreshing to see a European pov on non-LD Chinese legends

He doesn't have the same speed, power or flamboyant playing style that is 'exciting' to watch as other players. But he is the most consistent, fittest and calmest player I have ever seen. As a result, his defensive play is so good and that is how I think he remained in the top for so long. He doesn't need a strong attack, he just needs to wear you out long enough to create opportunities and score at pivotal moments with accurate and precise shots and that's why I think he is a great player

The only thing that may make him looks "underrated" is that he's the poster boy for Lining instead of Yonex. And we all know how good Yonex is at glorifying their affiliated players through various marketing campaigns and international events. Another thing is his character. Chen Long is often seen as being "humble", "calm", "great defense" which are less preferrable in term of marketability. Mean while LD, LCW, Taufik are either related to "attacking", "fast", "aggressive" or even "arrogant", which are more attractive to the mass and media.

Like you said towards the end.. Chen long’s rise came at the tail end of Lin Dan’s dominance. And during this time, it was almost expected as a formality from any Chinese badminton player to win these titles. Which also meant, more neutral fans were looking towards players from other nations to support and Chen’s reserved personality certainly didn’t help him gain any popularity! My other theory is (I am possibly incorrect) that during Chen Long’s reign of dominance, it was actually the Women’s Singles discipline that was more exciting and popular with many new faces from many different nations fighting for the top spot! Only a handful of MS players from that time turned any heads.

Sure, it was Victor's moment, but Chen Long has played some highest quality shots when other top players can bearly keep the shuttle in due to the wind condition. Yes in my opinion he just made the game more exciting to watch due to the competitiveness on that era. During the peak of men's singles it was going to be either him, Chong Wei or Lin Dan for the title. Nowadays, with the retirement of these 3 legends, it feels like the game is trying to find back the glory that it once had. Sure, there are many young talents such as Chisto Popov, Kunlavut, Kodai and comebacks such as Prannoy and CTC to challenge Axelsen's reign. But are they consistent and good enough to provide the rivalry over next 2 decades. Only time will tell.

Chen Long was very quiet and reserved, never really making any public news stories and having any public appearances. Also, he's kinda like the Andy Murray of badminton, born into the same era as all time greats.

Of course the olympics is impressive but I think you forgot his most prestigous achievement beating the very Ben Beckman. :) This video is really something by the way, it reminds me of big channels like Sipover who does Minecraft documentaries, I know I know Im comparing our great sport of badminton to Minecraft but those videos have millions of views. Keep up the good work this is definitely the best documentary on badminton, this is like something I'll find on BBC Player. I appreciate the time and effort to make these videos It must take a very long time. I also owe you as I am guilty of overlooking Chen Long and will definitely go watch Chen Jin in the future as I only have heard his name a few times. Keep up the good work.

I haven't looked many of your videos, and maybe I am wrong, but I hope you have a video of Lee Yong Dae, Korean MD player.. whom I have met and admired for years and who started my obsession in badminton. If you don't, I truly would like to see it one day. I have the deepest admiration into Korean society and especially badminton and their national team, the spirit and the training. Hope to find or see a video of him and his achievements soon!

@@BenBeckmanBadminton Thank you! As I rember of Lee Yong Dae's interviews, he always thought Xhang Nan and Fu Haifeng were the most difficult rivals, though they(Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seung) of course mentioned Ahsan And Setiawan often. Waiting for a deepdive! Before Rio, which they failed at, they promoted badminton in Korean tv show, Cool Kiz on the Block, and played with celebrity/idol stars of that time, that's mostly when I started with badminton... they were fun and enjoyable and played in the final(against Park Joo Bong(first olympic gold in MD) and Kim Dong Moon), against first badminton legends from Korea. Which was fun and humbling to see. Right now Yong Dae has his own channel Wonderplay Badminton, on KZfaq.. I think you a fitting guest for it :)

@@BenBeckmanBadminton Also, the first ever badminton competition I ever watched was Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong against Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen 2013, which not just by me, but also by the commentators was a brilliant match, by a new pairing and felt like I could only wait for new and better and more continuation results of one of the best pairs in badminton.. which they delivered. Though they did not deliver as.. they continued to stay too far on the court which despite their awesome defense and change of play, great netplay and placement when Yong Dae or Yeong Seong was up for it, still missed... which Yong Dae admits by now, their coaches did not much discuss.. because they were playing well enough.. which is a problem.. play well enough and your problems will not be noticed...

Great work ethic, Won every major title, World Championship, Olympics, Sudirman, Thomas Cup, But Lin Dan was simply more marketable for sponsors in all major markets. Even LCW was more marketable despite not winning anything major. Chen Long was just a victim to marketing. Wouldn't make sense for the media to pit a Chinese player against another Chinese player as greatest rival.

He definitely was over-shadowed by the fans' desire for continuity of LD's rivalry with LCW. Anyone who came in between that rivalry was often overlooked. He was surely not a fan favourite because our hearts was only big enough for LD and LCW. But a legend he definitely was.

Excellent video about Chen Long. It echoes what I thought about him as well. An overlooked legend. If there is one thing that I might add, him being overlooked may also had to do with him not playing as long as both Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei. I think part of the reasons why those two are so memorable is because they were active for a really long time, far longer than most top players. Chen Long retired much earlier than them. If he had stayed playing for another Olympics cycle after Tokyo, he might have achieved more and thus leaving more legacy, especially when there weren't Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei to steal his spotlight.

@@BenBeckmanBadminton Yes, but that is yet another comparison that he lost to Lin Dan, as Lin Dan has been around even longer than him. Since he is 6 years younger than Lin Dan, he should have lasted far longer than Lin Dan, but he retired only 2 years after Lin Dan retired. I always get the feeling that he retired earlier than he should, as with many other Chinese players than are not Lin Dan.

@@reinartes7079I mean he married Wang shuxian and they have kids now so it makes sense he retired. He had kids relatively early compared to many professional athletes so that may be a reason. We have to remember that badminton is not like football or basketball, where there is an offseason. There really isn’t any off-season in the year.

LCW better than CL, CL better than LD, they all same level legend, China tactics to use either one player to fight with LCW, make their rival tired, so that LCW not enough time to recover at the final stage, but when CL n LD meet each other the instruct one of the player to withdraw or defeat.

I do thk Chen Long is underrated. Alot of ppl do know him but he doesnt hav the same stardom like LD or LCW. Personally theres 2 factors imo, first his yrs active is shorter at 14yrs. LD's was 20yrs and LCW's 19. The latter would hav played longer if not for his health. Then theres playing style. CL is efficient and steady but slower paced. LD had great tactical awareness and massive smash. Probably more showy style. LCW had the speed and suprise element.
