I agree, the game on-court in the 2017 final is hard to beat. Okuhara and Sindu were top players at the time but not at the same level as the LCW v. LD rivalry. @@wifistudy1570

One notable distinction between Lin and Lee that must be emphasized is the countries they represent. I'm not attempting to compare the superiority of one nation over the other. Instead, I'd like to point out the vast differences in badminton culture between their respective countries. As a result, the responsibilities and expectations placed upon these athletes vary significantly. In Malaysia, badminton is regarded as the national sport, which speaks volumes about the country's passion and emphasis on the game. When a legendary badminton figure like Lee emerges from Malaysia, one can only imagine the immense expectations the Malaysian public places on him. This is a tremendous pressure for any athlete, especially in the finals or during critical points in a match. Even a fleeting moment of acknowledging this pressure can impact their performance, leading to hesitations or misjudgments that wouldn't normally occur. In contrast, Lin didn't face the same level of pressure. The Chinese badminton team at the time had several outstanding male singles players, like Chen Long, Chen Jin, and later, Tian Houwei. When Lin felt he wasn't at his best or wanted more time to prepare for other significant matches, he could afford to lose some less critical games without facing intense media scrutiny. For athletes at their level, monetary rewards are often a secondary concern. In essence, Lin had more leeway and time to adjust his form, allowing him to be better prepared for major competitions.

Also the facility and training given were different. Ultimately, both players are really close in their level of skills. LCW unfortunately had much higher pressure and seem unable to beat LD in big games. He had nearly beaten him a few times in WC and Olympics, but just couldn't finish off the match points on a few occasions. Real heartbreak for one of the best badminton player of all time.

As a Chinese myself, I’d say the pressure from the expectation of 1.4bn people on the back of LD is much bigger than the pressure on LCW. If LD didn’t win the 2008 Olympic, he would end up being the nation’s enemy the same way Liu Xiang did in the 110m men’s hurdles. However, he pulled it off, with that tremendous amount of pressure, that victory eventually forged LD’s mentality and built him the nerve of steel which gives him the advantage facing LCW during the following years.

Also a china national here, I would agree that Lcw might be under more pressure, but I think the training plays a bigger part here, both mentally and physically. In China we have numerous badminton world champions from every generation, the team knows how to prep LD for the pressure, also provide him opportunities to face other superior ms player in daily training. On the other hand, Lcw is always trying to win the first title for his country, and forced to play more international matches as training since there is no other Malaysia ms player on his level. IF Lcw is in China, I wouldn't doubt he can become world champion

Without Lin Dan, LCW would have won All Grandslam titles. But, that wouldn't be significant. Badminton would be dull. Their rivalry is peak badminton in the entirety of badm history.

very good video. I personally think the 2012 Olympic final is higher quality but both are incredible matches. The biggest shame is that LCW didn't win the 2016 Olympics. He would have needed the one rest day before the final, that would have been enough.

Nah he would have lost either way, Chen long at that point in his career was outright better than lee, he beat him in 2014-2015 world championships as well. Lee couldn’t compete with prime Chen long anymore

@@traytyler9951 The difference in the final was very small. In London there was a rest day. With the rest LCW would have won imho. LCW was still very very good, in 2018 he was close to his absolute peak.

This was the first badminton match i ever watched and the video that actually started my love for this beautiful game. Downloaded it on a whim, watched it so many times and has since watched so many other matches. Thank you for breaking it down and providing the rich history of one of the greatest sporting rivalries. Lin Dan is able to play at a strong pace over 3 games and still strong enough to close up the final points.His defence like LCW's is impecable and his arm strength throughout the match is incredible.He has the skill,fitness mental and arm strength that makes him a notch above all other players.However he was a spent force after 2012.

Lin Dan was World Champion in 2013 after a long break and was arguably still the best player in 2014 but didn't play the world championships. Let's ignore that he got to the WC Final in 2017 and some other titles and finals he made way past 2012.

Best badminton match ever+British narrative=great video! In the decisive moments, LD attacked the deep forehand corner which was a relative weakness for LCW. One technical difference between the two was that LCW took quite late shots using a more aggressive sideways stance whereas LD always commited to late technique and pointed his racket leg toes to the back corner. LD actually commited to late technique on his forehand even if he arguably could have been more proactive but his shot quality was pristine.

For me, the 2012 Olympic final is the most epic. LD truly extinguished every effort of LCW to achieve even a big title in his career although they met several times later but 2012 is the biggest chance for LCW due to his peak of form also confidence

have you considered investing in a really good condenser microphone? I think it will make your videos more engaging! I don't want to sound like a perfectionist but I studied videography in college and we found that audio plays a significant role in films and increases the overall quality of any film or video when given attention.

Being LCW is very hard.. He is the most unlucky player in badminton.. Been in the Olympics final for three times, World championships for four times but ended with silver.. He deserves more than LD and CL. If he was born in China, the entire story will be different

Chinese need players who can win titles for them, however LCW can't. U can be the nest player in the world but u don't perform ur best in main important match, that's choking. Its doesn't mean lin dan was better, he was just lucky The matter of fact is, he lost 5 main finals still as popular as lin dan, tell the volumes of his greatness. Definitely he lost titles, he still is better player to many people than lin dan.

For me 2011 is indeed the best, i mean, at least of all i ve seen 😅. But i'm quite certain that the 3 final in a row, 2011 BWF, 2012 olympics and 2013 BWF, are the most impressive duel between 2 badminton players. Such a pity than LCW couldn't take at least one 😑

Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei were both legends of badminton. The way you described their story was spot on. Their rivalry will stand the test of time. If you look at the statistics, out of their 40 matches, Lin won 28 to LCW's 12. But that doesn't tell the full story. On paper they were evenly matched but Lin always seemed to have the upper hand by winning the crucial points. LCW dominated the scene and won almost everything. But for some reason he couldn't beat his nemesis. Looking back now, it truly is heartbreaking for someone of LCW's quality to never win the Olympic Gold. To make it to 3 consecutive Olympic finals only to finish second every time. It's hard to put into words how these two made me feel. They were both unbelievable players, the speed, quality, recovery, attacks, defence, deception, diving saves they had it all. They kept pushing each other to bigger and greater heights. I had the privilege to watch them first hand in their element. I was in awe of them both. No one played the sport like they did. They were incredible on the court. Off the court, I even managed to meet LCW in person. He's such a humble and respectful guy. As a kid I was team Lin Dan but as I grew older I admired LCW. The way he kept giving everything even with all the setbacks to never give up and strive to be the best he could possibly be. They inspired so many players to pick up a racket and play badminton. I for one certainly did. Watching them as a kid to now being an adult, it made me fall for the beautiful game of badminton. Thank you Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei. 🇨🇳🇲🇾🏸

Between 2006 and 2013 there were 6 world championships, 2 Olympics and 8 all England's Here's the list of winners not Lin Dan, for 8 years: Chen Jing Chen Long Lee Chong Wei End of list Lin Dan won 12 of the possible 16 biggest titles over an 8 year peak.

Lee Chongwei could have been the GOAT, unfortunately, he was in the same periode of the REAL GOAT : LIN DAN. He retired in 2020 and with all his achievements I believe we will have to wait until 2120 before a player could match his 'inhumanly' achievements

Axelsen still has his chance, just wait and see. But the chance is rare though. For now I think Axelsen just has a winning streak better than Lin Dan, and that really means little. Let along today he has less competitive rivalries like LCW, Momota also had his chance being LD or LCW, but he is unfortunate.

Players nowadays have such inconsistent performance. They rise in one tour then disappear. The way Viktor win the championships is not really satisfactory for badminton fans as no one can really challenge him.

lin dan is a stronger player then lcw mentally if its a 20-20 scroe and you give match point to lin dan he will convert it on the first try while lcw fails, mental battle is harder then the game itself

I personally rate 2014 World Championship final (MD) and 2009 WC (MD) finals best for doubles. And this was the best MS final in terms of things which were at stake. For me my favourite LCW moment was Semi Finals of Rio Olympics. The final laugh in last showdown! Lin Dan is the G.O.A.T overall no doubt. But LCW is the king of Superseries & most dominant World No.1 ever!

Oh man, that AE SF is amazing too. I did say that a few years ago. But opinions on things can change and after digging into the story and everything it gave me a higher appreciation for this match. But dude...that is a good spot...

I think that what makes the 2006 all England match is special because they were both young and at their physical peaks. Less on the line but imo if you want to watch peak MS badminton standard it is that match. Watching any of today's MS players in comparison to that is like watching badminton devolve in real time.
