***Here is the translation: Press Conference*** This video was published in Jan 2018 before Seong-Jin's tour in Korea, and it includes an interview and a press conference. Some of the questions they asked only show SJ's answers. [publisher has deleted all questions asked] A: When I play different composers like Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven, I change my posture accordingly. I don't mean to say my body posture, but my stance towards music, just like when I change into different clothes, creates entirely different sounds and musical interpretations. A: I think concentration is one of my strengths, so creating different moods for different composers is something I think I am good at, not that I like talking about my strengths-[Seong-Jin speaks in a shy tone]. A: I try not to listen to other's interpretations, other players' CDs before I learn a new piece these days because I want my interpretation to shine through in my music. A: When I practice the piano, sometimes I enjoy it, and other times, I don't, and of course, the same applies during or after my performances. When I am not satisfied with my performance, I feel difficult to take it, and when I have satisfactory performance, I feel good. I enjoy it when my practice goes smoothly or a new idea comes to mind. I have a rough time when my practice doesn't go smoothly, or I feel it's hard. A: I don't get stressed quickly. Hanging out and eating with good friends, resting, sleeping well all help ease my stress level. A: While traveling, I often head toward my hotel room alone, but I don't particularly feel lonely because, being the only child, I felt quite comfortable being alone. I do enjoy the time alone. I get more physically tired when I attend a reception after my concert, but I like eating good food with good people as much as I like being alone. So I am not too concerned. A: The best memory in terms of meeting people, um [SJ pauses]. . . Recently, after my concert with Berlin Phil, I went out to eat with the orchestra members. We went to eat together and had plenty of time to talk. It was a happy time. There was also a member that I knew personally. I enjoyed the tour. A: I have many historical figures and composers whom I want to invite over. Among composers, I would be happy to meet with Beethoven, Brahms, and of course, Chopin. I like conductor Carlos Kleiber and want to meet him. A: I attach great importance to the piano and acoustics. You can't change acoustics. For instance, if I play with a high tempo when there is too much resonation in the hall, then there are chances that all notes are not heard. I used fewer pedals at that time. You can change the piano. The piano technician's role is crucial. If I don't like the piano, I address my request and have a long talk with the piano technician. I watch while they are tuning the piano and communicate with them by addressing my ideas, my thoughts of what I want. A: Nowadays, it is challenging to determine whether one is a modern composer. Some say Messiah is a modern composer and others say he is not. Some say Bartok is, and others say he is not. Compared to the Classic or the Romantic era, the characteristics of modern composers tend to fade away because the characteristics change dramatically depending on each composer. For instance, Righetti used folk music or rhythmical technique a lot. Messian expressed bird sounds or included a lot of religious music. So I think one's approach should differ according to each composer. What I want to try is . . . I don't consider Bartok as a modern composer. Bartok is one of my favorite composers, and I want to play his concertos. A: I started studying in Paris in 2012. The most helpful subject for me was music analysis. My way of interpreting music changed through that. I hadn't had a chance to learn it systematically in my earlier school years. I learned a lot, and among all the classes that I took in Paris, that class left a big impression on me. A: I don't necessarily have a fear. I see what is approaching when I reach my thirties or forties. It hasn't been long since I won the Chopin Competition, and I am still a young pianist [23 years old]. Also, I am booked up to the end of 2020, so I don't have many worries at this time. When I reach my thirties, many younger players will emerge, and I will be placed in an odd age group where I am no longer considered a young pianist or among the greats. Little by little, I've started envisioning and preparing what to do when the time comes. A: As I had mentioned earlier, the word I dislike the most is "prejudice." There is a certain perception people have on their minds when it comes to Beethoven. That perception could be right or wrong. Beethoven's early works and his later works are entirely different. His early works exhibit classical characteristics influenced by Haydn. His later works like Sonata No. 30 that I will be playing make you doubt that the same composer wrote it. It was written in a very different style. Therefore I think you should adjust your playing style accordingly. You don't want to play it in uniform at all times just because it's Beethoven's works. I think there is Beethoven who fights against his fate, but also Beethoven who accepts his fate (in his music). A: I mostly listen to classical music. Nevertheless, I think Korean pop singers are excellent, and also there is a lot of good pop music. I like Kwang-Suk Kim and, once in a while, listen to his songs. I didn't realize it, but I guess it's my habit to look up at the sky.

***Here is the translation: INTERVIEW part*** This video was published in Jan 2018 before Seong-Jin's tour in Korea, and it includes an interview and a press conference. Some of the questions they asked only show SJ's answers. A: I will continue to strive to play better (shyly). Q: We often talk about how our time simply flows by us, but your time doesn't seem to do that, and you have already left noticeable footsteps. Speaking of your music career, you performed with the Berlin Phil and performed in Vienna's Wiener Konzerthaus last year. There has been remarkable development. What was the most memorable event in the past year for you? A: Um, I had a little over 100 concerts last year. Many of them were memorable, but if I had to pick one, performing with the Berlin Phil was the most memorable because I had my heart set on achieving that since I was a child. I was also delighted that I could perform in Korean with the Berlin Phil. Q: Do you feel your career was boosted a little by performing with the Berlin Phil? A: Yes. I feel that my career took a step forward, and I also gained a bit more confidence. Q: In an interview with the magazine "Club Balcony" published by Credia in January, I remember you said you were finally acknowledging yourself as a pianist. A: Yes. Q: [toward the audience] In the past, he has been shy to call himself a pianist. A: Yes. [shyly] Q: He is still hesitant. The audience here today is fortunate. Approximately 400 fans have been invited here, breaking through the tough competition. A: Um, this is my first tour across Korea. I have performed at the Seoul Art Center multiple times before, but this is my recital debut there, and I am very excited. I feel honored to perform with Kyung-Wha Chung, whom I admire, in September; I will collaborate once a month in November and December. I will play Beethoven's concerto with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra led by Maestro (Sir Antonio) Pappano in November and Mozart's concerto in December to celebrate Deutsche Grammophon's 120th birth anniversary. Q: Do you wish to communicate with your audience in a certain way during this tour? A: I didn't have the chance to perform a lot in Korea immediately following the Chopin Competition due to my schedule and other conditions. I am glad that I can perform more in Korea than I have been in the past. At the same time, I am most nervous when performing in Korea. I was born here and am more used to the setting- which makes me more anxious. Q: There have been some significant changes in your life recently; you moved out of Paris and are now based in Berlin, is that correct? A: Yes, I relocated in August. Q: A lot of fans here said they wished to hear about your life in Berlin. What is it like to live in Berlin? A: Because I travel a lot and just moved in August, I've only been in Berlin for just over a month. So far I like it a lot. I feel comfortable living there, and there are also many musicians there. Except for early sunsets and the unfavorable weather, I like everything else about living in Berlin. Q: Were there any specific reasons or triggers for your decision? A: Many young musicians nowadays want to move to Berlin, and many are already living there. It's like a trend. I thought about the reason and subsequently visited Berlin; I happened to be on a promotional trip to Berlin a couple of years ago in 2016. I was able to tour Berlin during my free time for a few days. For me, Paris is a better place to travel, but I feel more eased to live in Berlin in a way; it is an excellent city for musicians to live in. Great concerts are held there, and many outstanding orchestras are based in the city. Q: Next question from a fan . . . When you resided in Paris, you stated you were visiting many art museums daily like Musée d'Orsay and acquiring inspiration. [question cut off]. A: When I lived in Paris, I visited museums a lot, but it was only before I won the Chopin Competition. Now that I travel a lot, I try to stay home as much as possible when I am in Berlin. At home, I rest, practice the piano, and meet my friends. I live an ordinary daily life. Q: You say it is an average life, but it does not sound average to us at all. [question cut off]. A: I try to practice the piano for 4 hours. I realized it was hard to practice more. Q: You mean 4 hours daily? A: It is hard to practice more because my shoulder and hands start to hurt. So I practice for 4 hours or less and take a break after that. Q: How do you . . .[question cut off.] A: I love Brahms, and yet I haven't played him a lot. I specifically said "in my thirties" because I want to study more and master it to my comfort zone. When I was little, I was on a chubbier side, and I believe there is a relationship between the player's body weight and the sounds they produce. I will need to gain more weight to play Brahms, and I predict I will weigh more in my thirties. [reporter and audience laugh] Q: What kind of food did you say you liked? A: I like any food. I like it all. In Germany, nowadays, I drink a lot of beer. Q: [Toward the audience] You folks can take note of that as a gift idea. [laughs]. The next question by a fan was, what do you attach great importance to? [question cut off] A: It is hard for me to define "living a good life." Nonetheless, I think your personality and your music correspond, and it is something you are born with and not something you have control over. Q: You are the first Korean who's won the Chopin Competition and [question cut off] A: I wish to be remembered with Seong-Jin's Cho's music in the long run and not as the winner of the Chopin competition. Even before the competition, I played a lot of different repertoires, and I am currently studying more to add new ones. I will be living my life as a pianist for many years to come, and it would be a great shame if I only played Chopin's music. There is tons of great music out there. There are no reasons other than that. Q: Starting from Jan 7th . . . [question cut off] A: Beethoven is a composer that I admire; I often find unpredictable harmonies and musical ideas in his compositions. I admire him a great deal because he makes me wonder how he could conceive such creative ideas. I have wanted to play his works for a long time, and I thought I would start by putting him in the program. I've included Debussy in the program because I recorded him last year, studied him a lot in Paris with my teacher, Michel Beroff, and thought Debussy would go well with Chopin. Q: [question cut off] A: It's okay to cough, but it would be helpful if you cover your mouth. [laughs] Q: Lastly, [question cut off] remains the same? A: Yes, I said that last year and my answer remains the same since it wasn't long ago [reporter laughs]. I feel humbled to those who make a lot of effort to popularize classical music. Having said that, in my opinion, I hope to see many more people getting into classical music. Q: You are saying you would like to see many more people getting into classical music? Why do you think it is risky to popularize classical music? A: It is hard to put my thoughts into words for it. I may sound too conservative; I think popularizing classical music may cause it to lose its essence. It might not be the case, but I think the possibility still exists. For that reason, I am not doing anything towards popularizing it. Please note it is only my opinion, and I do respect different opinions. Q: That's understandable . . . [questiion cut off] A: I spent New Year's Eve in Berlin with my family. When we were saying a wish at midnight for the New Year, I realized I didn't have any wishes. So rather than having a resolution for the year, I wish to stay healthy and perform well for a long time. I have also set a long-term goal to break prejudice. While I was performing abroad, I've never experienced racism. However, I realized there was still prejudice against Asian performers. Thanks to our teacher's generation who have pioneered well, I don't have too much difficulty performing abroad, but there is still ongoing prejudice on how Asian performers play. When I become a part of the older generation, my long-term goal is to make it possible for the younger generations to perform freely without feeling any prejudice against them. Q: You are already ahead of the game and planning for the younger generations. [reporter and audience laugh, Seong-Jin was 23 years old at that time of this interview] A: Maybe, I am jumping ahead. [laugh] Q: This will wrap up our interview with Seong-Jin.

조성진 인터뷰는 항상 인터뷰어들이 무례하게 느껴짐. 다들 본인 동생인가. 왜케 다들 예의가 없게 느껴지죠. 그래서 인터뷰들 안보게됨.

I've put up the translation in two separate comments PAGE 1 and PAGE 2 above; I happened to pass by and saw your comment here. If you need any other videos or articles about Seong-Jin translated, please directly comment under me as well. I can't guarantee instant translations but I will do my best. Some videos already have the translations but you just don't see them because they've moved to the bottom of the comment sections as people post more comments :D You might find these articles interesting if you haven't read them yet: www.mercurynews.com/2018/05/23/korean-wunderkind-pianist-ready-to-dazzle-in-san-jose/ wherecherriesripen.blogspot.com/2019/10/interview-seong-jin-cho-its-important.html www.primoartists.com/news/in-conversation-with-seong-jin-cho
