How is it a win? White plants the duck in front of the pawn and you can't advance. Stalemating loses the game by rule.
@Modie
@Modie Жыл бұрын
@@pairot01 Stalemate is different in duck chess. You are allowed to move your king to a square that is attacked. So the traditional stalemate isn't possible. A stalemate position in duck chess would be that you are playing as white, your king is on a8 and you have two pawns, one on a7 and one on b7. Now if the opponent places the duck on b8, you can't move anymore (neither pawn nor king), because you have to move first and THEN place the duck. In this case, white wins, because black forced a stalemate by putting the duck on b8.

The concept of Duck Chess is super interesting for someone that's not seen this variant before. The duck acts as a blocking piece so that others can't move into or through it. This results in some funky stuff, like denying bishops/queens/rooks their line of sight, which can make it really hard to mate someone or promote from a distance, cus you can just plant the duck in the way while you go about your usual strategy.

38:38 actually Kb3 Db1 is just mate. If the king is trapped in the corner you don't even need the pawn to win. And yes, king + pawn v king is always winning, and so is king + any piece v king. CORRECTION: king + pawn vs king is actually a draw in a lot of cases. So the position at 36:50 is actually a draw with correct play and around 37:10 white makes some mistakes and the position becomes winning for black.

@tcooke182
@tcooke182 Жыл бұрын
I have written a small duck chess tablebase, and you are incorrect. King + Rook/Queen is almost always winning. King + Bishop is sometimes winning. King + Knight is occasionally winning. King + pawn usually wins if it is a flank pawn, or if the central pawn is sufficiently advanced. In this case, the first position (after White took the rook, at 36:51) was a draw with correct play. White's biggest mistake was at 37:10. Instead of moving out of check in front of the pawn with Kd3@e4, he needed to go behind the pawn. The duck can be used to stop the pawn advance. Then, if Black continues shouldering the king down to the edge of the board (say Black king on d8, White has the opposition on f8 and duck on d7) then Black plays Kc7@e7 preventing White from retaining the opposition. If White makes a king move, Black just moves back. If White makes a pawn move, Black wins the race to the pawn. This only works from behind the pawn because the pawn itself defends the squares diagonally in front.
@joulev
@joulev Жыл бұрын
@@tcooke182 Is there a way (web, github source, etc.) for me to try this tablebase? Duck chess endgame theories are really interesting actually, I completely didn't expect the way K+P/K endgame can turn out to be what it is at the end of the video.

@eriksteffahn6172
@eriksteffahn6172 Жыл бұрын
@@tcooke182 Interesting. I wrote a small tablebase myself (admittedly not a very good one, but it seemed to be correct) and my result was that bishop or knight is always winning, unless you lose the piece by force. I even tested it on some weaker pieces: a rook that can only move one square is still winning, a bishop that can only move 1 square is a draw, unless the king is trapped in the corner. What does sometimes/occasionally winning mean for you? Like only if the king is trapped on the edge of the board? About the king + pawn v king: I couldn't test that one, I just assumed it had to be winning, because eventually you have to stop blocking the pawn. It would be really interesting to see how the drawing mechanism works as it doesn't seem obvious to me at all.

Pattern recognition just goes out the window. Openings are different. Hanging pieces is different. So much training and instinct that now leads you right into mistakes. You practically need to re-train your brain. If Magnus spent six months training in Duck chess? He'd probably be pretty good. But that would also probably damage his normal chess skills -- at the level he plays at he can't afford to give an inch.
