It's nice to see `perfect` games. I would like to see Eric 'blunder' in the first moves (like I usually do) and then try to get back in the game. I'm sure it would prove useful to see how to play 'solid' after small mistakes.

Where did this idiom "white is for choice" come from? Really unfortunate that it has been adopted by one or two chess commentators as it is a little annoying.

Hi Eric. I love this series. Against 1.d4, you clearly like the QGD, though I think I've seen you play the Nimzo. Have you ever experimented with g6 based defences such as the KI, Grunfeld and Benoni? Any thoughts about these?

In the first game you described the white pawn on d6 as a 'focal point.' In Vukovic's Art of Attack he defines 'focal point' as a square where a mating attack culminates. There's no particular reason to accept or use Vukovic's definition but I thought I'd mention it. Thx for the game.

Great board but playing the opponent pieces while your time is running is unfair. Stop their time is unfair as well. So just getting 1-2 sec extra with this board would be fair, I guess.

Eric could you please point out why it is important to play h6 to kick off the white’s bishop. I came across that move in some mainlines of QGD like structures as well as in your second game in this episode. But I don’t fully grasp the importance. For instance in your case you could have seemingly played a5 right away, but instead you also followed that rule of a6. I would appreciate some clarification. I am 1900+
@eric-rosen6 сағат бұрын
Good question! Here are my thoughts... h6 is generally a useful move to include, as it provokes white's bishop to commit to the kingside (usually to h4) and creates some air for the black king. Generally, it's not great for white to trade on f6, but this always something to consider before playing h6. Assuming the bishop commits to h4, this give black the flexibility to consider g5 with tempo in future positions. It's not always super important (like the positions featured in this video), but there's usually very little downside to including h6 in these QGD structures. The reason why I don't play it sooner is because if I can get a Cambridge Springs, the bishop can be a tactical target with Qa5 and Ne4 hitting g5.
@dmitrymashkov93795 сағат бұрын
@@eric-rosen thank you for the detailed answer 😊. I am sometimes hesitant to throw in h6 when my other night might do a Spanish walk to g6 and assuming there is a battery on that diagonal I would not mind much to trade that knight for white’s other bishop. Therefore, h6 sort of rejects that possibility and commits to another approach. I appreciate your response! I wasn’t sure you had time to read through comments 😀

I just started played chess 3 months ago and learned so much from your speedrun series. Yesterday reached 1500 after starting from 400. Always trying to play solid like you do and opponent eventually blunders. But it feels like I've reached a stopping point on elo climb. How do I improve from this point onwards?

Study. Lots of puzzles and theory. I broke 2100 blitz after 6 months of 30 minutes a day of puzzles and 30 minutes a day of theory (opening and end game). 45 minutes of rapid, 15 minutes of blitz. I start with 5 minutes of mate in 1 puzzles. Puzzles on Lichess. Playing on Chess

Once you have 7 or so openings you know well and understand at least the concepts of what you’re going for in different situations then study the refutation theory of the opening your opponents beat you with.

@@pjhansen19 I also have time management issues on blitz so I only play rapid for now. I do puzzles a lot but I have a hard time memorizing opening theories so currently only sticking to 4 openings 2 for each side

5:30 What is the point in putting the a rook to d1 instead of the f one?
@brettess5212 сағат бұрын
Possibly because he saw the possibility of the f file opening up after f4 and allowing the rook on f1 to target the black king position.
@eric-rosen5 сағат бұрын
I was envisioning my f-rook going to e1 as the e-file is half open for white and it could be useful in supporting the knights. I also thought that there might be cases where my bishop ends up dropping back to c2 and b1, and I didn't want my rook on a1 to get stuck. Usually these decisions should be based on what you think is the most harmonious setup for your pieces.
@zokisvasta5 сағат бұрын
@@eric-rosen Thanks a lot! In my mind that move was never an option, but moving the other rook there made sense to me as I could move the other one to the open file.

These games really highlight why tricky gambits are so popular. With Eric committing to sound, solid chess for instructive purposes, a lot of opponents at this level are maintaining good positions deep into the middle game. I suspect Eric could shred most of these players in 15 moves with his more dubious repertoire.
