In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you the most common chess opening mistakes or blunders in the Ruy Lopez which happens after the first moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. You will learn how to punish Black's mistakes in both the popular variations, 3...Nf6 which is the Berlin Defense, and 3...a6 which is the classical approach.
You will learn some really cool traps in these variations that give a strong, checkmating attack for White against the Black's king. In fact, in one of the variations the most played moves by Black gives White a success rate of more than 74%, that's huge!

Is it possible to make a complete course just on the Qe2 Ruy Lopez? I am looking at taking it seriously, so looking for courses on that, the two knights attack on the French at a level that would be respected, and the side lines, but those two are most important. I was also wondering if you can do individual positional concepts listed in your GM positional understanding course. It has a list of ideas for positional concepts, but there isn't any book or more importantly any video courses on them expanding on the individual subjects. Thanks for any answer.

I appreciate your going over the main lines in Ruy Lopez, and in proving them with the computer's analysis. But, especially, the optimism! Makes chess fun even if I lose, in trying these cool new moves out. Don't worry about anyone commenting that these are not All Possible moves! How silly to expect that.

Hello Igor. I'm a relative beginner, only been playing online for a year or so, and my rating has been between 950-1050 most of the time. I was just making it up as I go along, trying to learn from my mistakes, and watching what others did. I happened to watch a few of your videos over the weekend, and I watched your free masterclass last night, which I found to be interesting and easy to grasp the main concepts, so I do recommend that video to anyone. I played a few games after watching the video, and was much more attacking in my play, a bit more creative too, I could feel my thought process was different, that I had a strategy of sorts. So, I thank you for the free masterclass, and I am sure that my rating will edge upwards now, but more importantly, I will be enjoying the games more, because (as you say) attacking is always great fun. One other thing, down at this rating level, people don't play that many standard moves, and especially they appear to defend with pawns a lot, which can frustrate my efforts. 11:41 if black plays bishop h4 then how are you delivering a checkmate? Eventually you will still end up in a winning position cause you get a queen and a bishop for a rook after all the trades are done right? Is there something I can't see?

I’m new to chess but at min 11:42 looks like move 13 you say it’s checkmate no matter what black player does. what if black moves bishop to h4. I can only get a draw to occur. Thx love your videos.

Yeah I guess you're right but then you take with rook and the black queen has to take back. Then white takes the queen and its no longer checkmate but you're up a queen

Yeah, Ruy Lopez is kinda tricky and that's why it's my favorite opening, even against high level bots. Just a mistake from black can easily get destroyed pawn's structure and it leads to advantages to white

If black can force the Ruy Lopez b6 bishop back w a7 and b7 pawn advances to b3 diagonal, can the game then be considered the Italian game, and then black can use, say, the Rousseau Gambit defense p-f5?

Not risking the defense of the King. As it will leave openings. There is a simple way to say it this way. There are times to be aggressive and a time for defensive actions that even goes into retreats as you cannot afford it or it will lead into a bad situation in which things are more exposed.
