Excellent video as always! Loved that you went in depth on the position with the Bishop on f6 and Knight on d5. Didn’t realize the compensation for the pawn was so strong in that line. Look forward to your video on the scotch gambit.

I love the Urusov gambit....i love gambits in general, but the Bishop's opening is very dangerous. After 3 moves( e4, Bc4 then d4) Black must think they're genius after taking both central pawns, but the White pieces knows better! Thanks BigMio for the tips, tricks and tactics!

I have been playing this opening as white for a while and missed in the video/pretty much anywhere mentioning this opening is the line with Nc5 instead of Nf6 at the start of the variation. The main point is white intends to play BG5 and get all of their pressure through the pin. unfortunately for white, routing the knight to E6 removes any of these threats and black can comfortably continue with the same plan in the current main line of c6,d5. There also becomes the option for Nc6 where you chase the queen away without having any of that annoying and pesky pressure through the pin on the H4-D8 diagonal allowing black to expand with D5 with little risk. This variation has never been played at the master level, and only 1% of the time on lichess so it is not known, but it is prep I came up with after studying the urusov gambit with the engine for about 5 hours. Black tends to either keep the pawn, or with precise play from white he regains a pawn and it peters into a draw. In fact, in some lines it is white that gets harassed and pushed around for example: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Qxd4 Nc5 6. O-O Ne6 7. Re1 Nc6 8. Qg4 d5 9. Bb3 h5 and suddenly whites attack is coming to an end and they should now focus on regaining their pawn or risk being down a pawn with little to no compensation/potentially being attacked himself. There are still many attacking lines here for white but all of them either give black a solid advantage where both sides have counterplay unlike the typical urusov game where only white gets to have an active plan OR black is up a ton in material and white is forced to find some complicated attack that leads to a perpetual.

Thanks, good fun! There are other lines for black, like the super boring Nc6- immediate d5 (easily my recommendation if black's ok with a draw), the unexpectedly playable Nc6-Ne7-Ng6 and the Bb4 stuff. I used to play the sort of 'classical' setups as black with Qh4 and Bg5 and such, I found this to be the easiest one to handle for black: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Qxd4 Nf6 6. Nc3 Nc6 7. Qh4 d6 8. Bg5 Be7 9. O-O-O Bf5 White needs to castle first, no time for Bd3 due to some tactics.

35.07 My engine on my level (estimated 1600) at 7th move (till now main line suggested by Mio: 5. ... Nf6 6. Nc3 ... Nc6 7. Qh4) tried another 7. ... Bb4. I knew, that according the previous 6 th move we are in set - up black Nc6 (so not in alternative of black 6. ... c6 followed by ... d5) and also here I used the same set - up for white with active 8. Bg5. And it worked ! So I came bravely through downsides: after 8. ... Bxc3 9. bxc3 riuning my pawn structure, after 9. ... d5 10. Bd3 ... Qe7 11. Kd2 losing my castle - right, and after 11. ... Ne4+ 12. Bxe4 ... f6 13. Bxd5 ... fxg5 losing also my bishop pair. But my iniciative was tremendous and after 14. Nxg5 ... Qd6 15. Rae1+ ... Ne7 16. Qd4 ... c5 17. Nf7 ... Qh6+ 18. Qe3 ... Qxe3 19. Rxe3 with the battery of rooks on e- file I managed to win the exchange and whole game. Thanks to Mio, Urusov gambit is important continuation of bishop opening and I´m looking forward to use it after covid restrictions also in practical chess !

In the position at 11:35 you recomment Qd1. I had this position OTB and remember you say the plan but I had troubles getting my head around the positions that arises after 8.Qd1 h6. I ended up playing 8.Rxd7+ and was quite happy with the position. After the game I analysed with Fritz and with Stockfish and they disagree what is best. What do you think about 8.Rxd7+ ?
