In hungarian: We call the rook bastion; The knight horse; The bishop "runner" which is a mirror translation, so I'll go with messenger; Queen isn't the official name, instead we also call the queen "leader" which is another mirror translation, so I'll go with general instead; And pawn is called peasant or foot soldier. Fortunately, the king remains king, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if we had a different name for that too. Edit: the knight's official name is actually hussar

Fun fact, the rook is named after rookeries. These would be often tall towers used to house birds, especially messenger birds. Mostly it would be using corvids. Also if I was to put the knight in game terms it's that one guy with a knife or sword or similar who can evade all your shots somehow and stabs you in the face.

Damn, Don't starve really made these pieces accurate. They are called clockworks, and there are three kinds of them, the first and most basic being the knight. They jump and have a hard and fast hitting meelee attack, it's easy to dodge, but they have the highest dps. The second is the bishop. Very few enemies have ranged damage, and the bishop is one of them. They charge up a fucking long range attack and snipe you out of nowhere. They look like a rusty water dispenser. And lastly, the clockwork rook. This Robot Rhino With a Rook piece as its horn charges in a straight line, hitting like a truck, luckily, it can also hit his allies with each charge.

In Vietnamese the Rook is literally called a "Xe", aka. Car or maybe Chariot, depends on you. Bishop is called "Tượng", aka. Elephant, but what I like is that the Knight is called "Mã", aka. Horse, pretty accurate and probably inspired by Chinese chess.

And the reason why it was elephant and have long range is that Elephant army were used not only to scare their enemies with exotic animal, but also that elephant provides a good support for your archer, effectively a highly mobile archer tower. In fact they rarely used to charge simply because elephant is way too expensive to be used as charging unit.
