As I understood from their discussion Ian had the opportunity to give f4+ check before taking on the pawn on f7 and the difference is that without this check black king is closer to his vulnerable pawns. But after f4+ black king is forced to go in the center (because to Kf6 white responds with Rf7# checkmate) and so after Ke4, Bxf7 white would be a healthy pawn up (Rxc6 loses to Bd5+) with good advantage

Wow, this is so hilarious. Carlsen points out that Nepo had f4+ followed by Bf7 with a good advantage, instead of Bf7 immediately as played on the last move. Nepo says "Oh yeah, you had a chance to get an advantage when I played c5 earlier in the game with the simple ..Bxc5, you too had winning chances, haha"

@@FredPlanatia The computer clearly agrees that it gives an advantage, but it doesn't give a winning advantage. I imagine the computer thinks the resulting endgame is still a draw, but these are human players, and Magnus would get winning chances even though it's not necessarily clear cut

For everyone doesn't getting it, after c5 by ian in 2:36 Magnus had the chance to take with his bishop on c5, after dxc5 comes Qxd2. Bxd2. Rxe2. magnus would have had a extra pawn and a rook on the second line.

if bishop captures the pawn, and white takes back with the pawn, then black queen takes white queen, bishop takes queen, and rook captures the white light - squared bishop, the game is practically over
