Featured in this analysis is the game between Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen from the 2007 Linares Tournament. The opening is a Ruy Lopez, Closed with Carlsen selecting the Keres variation. Anand’s immediate d5 space grab ultimately gives his pieces better flexibility. Anand first threatens to infiltrate on the queenside, which compels Carlsen to demote his knight, and then quickly shifts the attention to the kingside where Carlsen’s pieces are absent for defense. Anand’s recapture on g5 set the stage for a beautiful tactical shot that essentially morphed a dormant bishop into a star piece.

Jerry, I have a request! Could you review one of your own games? Perhaps the game that you consider gave you your title? I'd love to see your style of play! Cheers!

In his early days Anand completely dominated Carlsen, there was not long between his first classical win against the Indian and his first classical world championship. Very instructive play and fine analysis. Thanks Jerry.

Wonderful analysis, Jerry, and marvelous game by Anand!. You don't see Magnus get steamrolled like that very often. Question: How do you feel your own understanding/analysis have changed since the widespread arrival of engines? Just genuinely curious how "now" compares to "then" for you.

This game shows that anand was a beast in calculation and positional play. Slightly unfortunate that we didn't get prime anand vs prime magnus. Magnus on paper is better but I think prime vishy would have been his toughest opponent so far. Vishy has all the skill to give him a tough fight. Good tactical ability, good opening prep and good positional play.

I often have a lot of trouble in positions like 3:15 trying to figure out whether to play b3 or b4 (or neither). Seems like in this case you're giving up an excellent square for a knight. Any insight into what to be thinking about there?
@phen-themoogle7651
@phen-themoogle7651 10 ай бұрын
b3 is less committal since you aren't making a potential pawn-hole on c4, also I've seen this idea in some positional chess books about pawn structures in that you slowly build up with a move like b3 because it's dynamic and gives you more options for either c4/a4 and maybe more choices depending on positions, but there's probably some positions similar to this where b4 could be the answer too if maybe there's not two knights capable of jumping to c4, but I'm not sure if black will just play cxb4 cxb4 Nac4 immediately, definitely worth studying more if you reach this kinda position often
@alephnull4044

Same, b4 looked so counterintuitive to me here and I can't fault b3, just looks like a move with a lot of benefits and no real drawbacks.
@alephnull4044
@alephnull4044 10 ай бұрын
Maybe the question after b3 is "then what". Black looks like they will be expanding on the queenside and I can't see an immediate plan for White. On the other hand b4 puts pressure and c5 (and therefore e5) and so gives White some initiative at the expense of giving Black an outpost.

@@alephnull4044 exactly, it's good for initiative, and White wanted the c-file to open up I think anyhow cuz black's knights felt a bit too much on the flank, it was funny seeing Na8 later too.
