This is a Round 1 game from the 2016 Candidates Chess Tournament between Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov. What is at stake in this tournament besides a big purse? Well, the winner of this lengthy 14 round event will earn a ticket to challenge the current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in November at the 2016 World Chess Championship match which will be held in New York, United States. This particular game heats up as early as move 15 where Topalov offers a pawn for some dynamic compensation in one of the oldest of chess openings, the Ruy Lopez. Anand and Topalov have played many times before, most notably in their 2010 World Chess Championship match encounter where Anand won narrowly. How might these two great timeless players of the game fair in Round 1 of the 2016 candidates tournament?

There are some great chess analysis channels on KZfaq but I can honestly say I like this one the best. I like it how you never really rush through the opening (some other channels sometimes even skip the first few moves) but explain everything in great detail. I really do always get something out of your videos ;)

Great analysis, I'm relatively "new" to chess and as such more focused on the groundwork but your analysis really reveals the beauty of Chess...so much going on beneath the surface of these games. Looking forward to the next one!

Congratulations Anand. Great start to the tournament. Thanks Jerry for covering this match and especially the initial move intricacies as people like me who are just 1500 to 1600 learn a lot when you point out obvious blunders which we commonly play. I am now plotting to punish some of my opponents mistakes.

+TheLazyManatee I think that was an answer to Jerry's question in the end: Who would you like see Carlsen play against in the world championship? To that I answer: Anand! Just kidding.. anyone but Anand. Nothing against Anand, but we've seen that story already. Caruana poses the biggest threat imo. He's inconsistent but has the capability to beat anyone in the world on his best day.

I'd like to see Caruana, Giri or Anand as the challenger. I think with Caruana we'd see the highest level of play so it's an obvious choice. Giri would also be very interesting since he is always very strong against Carlsen and this would make it an interesting match. If Anand wins the candidates I would very much like to see him try to win back the title of world champion.

Is Caruana considered a US player or Italian? And, just out of curiosity why can a player switch back and forth?
@AroundWayOther
@AroundWayOther 8 жыл бұрын
He plays for the us. A player can't really switch back and forth at their leisure . It's up to both federations. With Wesly So for example, the Philippines gave him a super hard time for trying to play for the us .

During 2014 - 2015, in non- blitz or rapid games, Carlsen lost 8 times to one of the candidates. Caruana and Topalov each won 3 times, Anand and Aronian each won once. The other four candidates had no wins.

After QC6, black should have played f6 threatening Be8! There's no way to avoid a pretty big loss of material there I think.
@KARTIKEYA007
@KARTIKEYA007 8 жыл бұрын
f6 does not threaten Be8 as there is a rook there. You would need to move the f6 pawn, move the rook to f8 and then play Be8, by which point white can easily get his queen out of that position

Fabio C. is a young guy. Not so bad looking. Him beeing the new world champion wouldent be a bad thing, me thinks - its all about promoting chess - Carlsen himself doesnt seem to be skilled enough at that task. Would Caruana do better? If so, he definately should play the championship match.

Samuel Young Soo... everyone knows his name... or his nationality, or his occupation??? I dont think so. This irritating car commercial was an okay attempt, but not much more than irritating. No idea if Caruana would present himself more likeable - so, its okay to have Carlsen as the face of chess.
