There is a local club in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 I would not mind joining . Never joined a chess club just always played online. This is why your channel is great because as far as I know I have never seen a video on actually joining a chess club on any chess channel yet it is something you would think would be almost mandatory for any channel. Well done once again on more great content. Btw anybody reading this help out Nelson by dropping his link or telling people online in the chat when playing. I do it’s the least I believe on can do if they don’t contribute directly .

another fantastic video. Given the fact we are on the tail end of the chess boom it might be useful to put out a beginner-intermediate playlist for those who know the rules and have played games but are stuck in that 400-800 range.

Thanks for the video! I am preparing to go to a tournament tomorrow and this was helpful. I was under the impression that you weren't allowed to write anything other than the move on your score sheet. You have written the clock timing as well, which would be good to know during the analysis. Is that strictly allowed or does it vary from tournament to tournament. I feel like Wesley So just got into trouble recently for writing things in the margins during his game.
@ChessVibesOfficial
@ChessVibesOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
I'd have to check the official rules to be sure, but as far as I'm aware, you are allowed to write the time on the clock as well as the moves.

So it will tell you if you need to bring a board? Are you allowed to bring a "mouse mat" type board with 2 1/4 inch squares - minimum, with a total size of 20 x 20, also- must it have the annotations for rank and file on the board-- or do you need to bring a WOOD board?? Which is proper etiquette if either is allowed-- what kind of board do most people bring??

Can you take any type of chess set and chess clock? Or are there guidelines that have to be met in reguards to the set and clock?
@ChessVibesOfficial
@ChessVibesOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Digital clocks are preferred, especially in a lot of tournaments now since they have increment and/or delay, which you can't do on an analog clock. As for the set, usually any one is fine, although if you have some sort of obscure set and it bothered your opponent enough, they could probably ask for it to be replaced, but I'd have to check the rules to be sure on that one.

Great guide !! I have a question.. what is the rules that i must follow when i am playing a game? (Like move the piece you touch)
@chesslegend4005
@chesslegend4005 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you touch one of your own pieces you have to move it, and if you touch one of your opponents pieces you have to capture it.
@ChessInstructorSF
@ChessInstructorSF 2 жыл бұрын
@@chesslegend4005 that is a GENERAL rule. What happens if you touch your chess piece and there are no legal moves for that chess piece? Then this rule is obsolete. Traditionally if you touch a chess piece it means you intend to do something with it, capture or move it. But at times you simply want to adjust its placement, center it on its own square, and in this case you will announce your intention to touch that piece to center it by saying j'adoube! French for “I Adjust” then your opponent will know your intentions. I was playing a game with a complicated position in a tournament, and my opponent moved MY knight! I was surprised and I stoped the clock and raised my hand. The Tournament Director (TD one of many people helping adjudicate on the board problems came to the board and I explained to him what had happened. Technically my opponent would have been sanctioned, by losing some time of their clock or forfeit the game. Both of us acknowledged the complexities in the position and both with the help of the TD decided that no penalty should be assessed and the game continued and I was victorious. The deep thinking process sometimes can play tricks on you and my opponent was thinking about what my knight could do, and moved it as if it was his. One thing I want to add, is that you MUST turn off your cellphone. Can you imagine 100s of cell phones ringing in the playing hall! So NM Lopez gave a list of what to bring, I will say this one item should be left outside the playing hall.

So what happens if you've been playing mainly online. Does your online rating transfer over to the tournement?
@ChessVibesOfficial
@ChessVibesOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't. You'll have a provisional rating at first and after your first several games it will calibrate and eventually you'll end up with your official OTB rating.

Question...the chess set you bring and board has to be tournament style right?
@ChessVibesOfficial

Not really, although if it's really obscure and your opponent complains you might have to swap it out for something more normal. But I've seen people playing on rather odd looking sets without problems.

@ChessVibesOfficial

They will let the GM enter the tournament for free without paying the entry, but if they win a prize, they'll then deduct the entry from the prize(in that case they'll deduct $100.)

@ChessInstructorSF

Some tournaments have 1500 players, can you imagine supplying all these boards and clocks, and keeping track of them so they don’t “walk” away? Any serious chess player will have his or her own chess set, favorite pieces, favorite board, favorite clock, I still have an analog clock and I like to see how young chess players look at it and try and set it up?! Hilarious! No buttons! Plus you also need the snacks and water bottle, so…

(Don't shoot the messenger, but)... if you're a woman... find in advance where the nearest CLEAN women's toilet is. If you're in a hotel, it might be on a different floor. According to some posts on /r/anarchychess, and one video from g*tham... the bathrooms at chess tournaments are (chris-chan-anime-convention level) DISGUSTANG! (Does somebody not know how to flush the toilet after they've had a shet?). As in, one bathroom for 30 sweaty guys. For that matter (This is advice from weightlifting/powerlifting competitions), BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER!!! You've got 50 guys, all fasting before the meet, chugging protein shakes and pounding rice and ground beef at 8:31 am after weigh-in. Seriously, bring your own toilet paper.
@ChessInstructorSF
@ChessInstructorSF 2 жыл бұрын
I typically go up to my hotel room after a game, so I have my own bathroom there. But you do make a good point. Chess has been male dominated for so long, we forget these little details.

I second this, and expand it to all restrooms. Even an excellently run conference at a top event center by one of the richest corporations in the world had absolutely disgusting restrooms. I can speak only for the men's, but this was at both the Moscone Center and San Jose Event Center, for the World Wide Developers Conference, hosted by Apple.
