Күн бұрынIn this video I bring you along as I swap out the condenser in a 2014 Chevy 1500. According to the folks at GM this problem only affects some 2015-2017 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles. You can find this in the bulletin 17336 - 07.
I am here to tell you though it affects WAYYYYY more vehicles than they have listed. However in typical GM fashion they deny everything and won't cover any vehicles not listed in the TSB under the extended warranty even though they use the exact part number haha. Way to go GM 😂

My father bought his first car in 1916 when he was 15. As he grew up so did the automobile repair industry. His #1 rule was that if the mechanic could not fix the problem on the first try, try a different mechanic. He did not claim that the first mechanic was incompetent, rather, Father believed a new set of eyes will see something that the other set of eyes has missed. This is a perfect example.

I'm sorry, but a "mechanic" that adds freon 4 times every summer on the same vehicle and can't find a leak is an idiot, or a freon salesman, or both.

I work at the GM plant in Lockport NY that makes that OEM condenser. They have had problems for years with leaking at the saddle couplers which connects the return tank to the core. The saddle insert coupler does not braze cleanly or securely to the tank due to the transition from oil cooler to condenser so we get leaks. I think I recall that the average mileage for failure was around 37K I've known many people up this way that have had multiple condenser changes as the final design correction took several years to sort out. Basically, we made alot of junk for this model for many years, 2012-2017 ish. Thank you GM!! And thank you Eric for another great video!!

Why would GM allow such a known defective procedure to continue? How hard could it have been to perfect the procedure to braze things properly?

GM also has a hard time building radiators. Useless things always leak on the plastic tank seal to aluminum on the side with the upper radiator hose. Even the aftermarket radiators only last a few years due to the pressure when the thermostat opens. There used to be a company that sold all aluminum radiators, but mail-order only.

That is exactly where my condenser failed. I had made it to ~70000 before it happened though. I guess I was "lucky" it lasted that long. It was replaced with the redesigned version and I'm still driving that truck.

5 part numbers later, they rotated back and forth to and from the same condenser, still sending out the defective units. Makes me wonder where it has landed to this day. Has the issue been solved, or are they still hit and miss? Been a long time gm owner, don’t think I’ll go any newer than my 99 Tahoe. Just lost faith in the brand.

Watching his videos I figured out why my fuel pump was not sending the status to the gages. I ended up filling the wires along the frame from the tank and I found a few broken. Not many mechanics are actually showing the problem, process and solution step by step as he does.

It depends on how the other shop pays the mechanic. The mechanic might only get 30 minutes or so to find the leak... then it magically becomes unfindable due to not getting paid for more time. When someone goes to a flat rate mechanic, then they get what they pay for or less.

@@hipshot823 Your version of reality is not real. In most shops, the service manager or foreman writes up the work orders and the mechanic does what is requested. The mechanic does not go rouge to do what he wants with someone else's property. If a basic A/C service and leak check is written up, it is usually a basic 1 hour evacuate, recharge with dye, and quick look for a leak If nothing is found, then get it out and on to the next work order. If a mechanic goes rouge for 3 hours, then no money for 2 hours and the service manager/ foreman and customer are not happy.

@@willw8011 Eric said the guy said the other shop usually did it four or five times a year, how many years did this go on? In the second year they should’ve stopped and investigated it a little more thoroughly. it’s just not responsible to do it that many times knowing it will leak right back out

@@jboz1435 It all depends on the circumstances. Many shops' managers do not care one little bit about looking up the vehicle service history and service bulletins. The customer has a few minutes to say what is or was going on and then the service manager or foreman writes up the work order. The mechanic offers recommendations to service manager or foreman.... and then the service manager or foreman talk to the customer about whatever they want to talk about. The mechanic almost never talks directly to the customer. That is just the way it is. The mechanic does not go rouge an order unauthorized repairs and parts. Most shops will not allow a mechanic to order parts, because all of that goes through the foreman and/ or service manager. The first time: usually shops will do the 1 to 1.5 hour basic A/C service and leak check. The shop will tell the customer to drive it and comeback, when it malfunctions. The second time: If the customer says the history, then the mechanic will look at it for dye leaks and do the same thing as the first time. The third time: the customer needs to find another shop. Some shops do not have skilled service managers/ foremen or mechanics that actually look for service bulletins. Some shops only want to do the easy stuff and hire the cheapest people on Earth. It is what it is.

I enjoyed rebuilding on my 2001 Jimmy 4.3L. I bought a rebuild kit from UAC via RockAuto. $265.00. Including Compressor with clutch, Condenser, Dryer, Orifice Tube, oil and seals. I did a new radiator, water pump and heater core at same time. I purchased a vacuum pump and hose and gauge set and did all service myself. Eric, you have encouraged me to do this stuff. You are most helpful. The technical aspects of servicing AC properly are involved, one must be aware of what he or she is doing. I watched a vid by Eric the car guy in order to get servicing right. Both of you Erics are the best. It isn't hard, just have to take it step by step. I am proud of the work I have done. It is rewarding to say the least. Money saved is one of the benefits.

I'll tell you, you are definitely right about the fact that A/C is "technical" and not all auto "mechanics" get it when it comes to A/C. That is why most people are purchasing new compressors, driers and new valves when the problem is something else. A/C work is done incorrectly with most shops and those who do it correctly are on the few shops list. Also, I never saw an automotive A/C system that worked properly blow cool air above 40 degrees. Some of them experts will tell you the cooled air will go up as the outside heat rises. Initially thats true but as it runs longer at the evaporator its not true. The txv or fixed orifice will regulate the temps as needed and on a hot day say around 105 the air coming out of the vents should be close to 40 degrees vs. a delta of 30. If its 105 outside and A/C is making 75 temps inside THAT is not normal.

Did that about a dozen years ago on my old 98 Lumina. Was a leak, not a compressor failure - flushed the evap and lines very thoroughly anyway. Wonderful AC til I got rid of the car a few years later, for a hybrid. Once you do it one time and it turns out perfect, you are good to go on any other cars in the future. I moved on to home HVAC so now I got a great setup - recovery machine, mic gauge, testo 550, nitrogen tank and flow gauge, O/A torch, metal duct fab tools, etc. Once you understand all the saturation temp, super cooling, super heat, etc the work is easy if you are an intuitive person.

@@Garth2011 People forget, or never knew, that AC in their vehicle is probably 80,000 BTUs. If it's working right it's going to blow _cold_ anywhere.

I have a Dually 3500HD, and being a bit of a mechanic I know I can ignore the little grinding noise for a while. After all, I've got new rotors for it already. This goes on for a little while..and then a while...and then a long while. I figure I will just be gentle on the brakes. One day I hit the brakes a little harder than normal and start hearing a thump thump thump sound. I figure at that point I have gotten the full value out of the pads and rotors and I guess I will change them (which is in fact a PITA) I discover that there in no longer any friction material on both fronts, which I expected. What was bigger news is that the pad, outer rotor surface and fins were gone from the pass rear rotor, and that the thump was just the drivers rear rotor fins hitting the pistons, as both the outer surface and pad backing was gone. Mind you, each surface is probably 3/8 thick... I definitely got every dollar out of that set of brakes!

You can look in the grill and see the leak. I've sprayed soapy water on them and watched the bubbles. they must be some real idiots at that place, why would anyone go back there.

The best way to find a leak is to use the sniffer products out there that will turn on a beeper and flash their lights when the probe is near refrigerant. Rarely you find leaks with eyeballs every time.

I can tell you may have done this repair JUST A FEW Times because you have memorized not only where the nuts, bolts, and clips are, but how many there are. Great memory! Just before I retired from the manufacturing world; where I was purchasing agent. I discovered; with great surprise, I have severe hearing loss in both ears. Not cool. Made me think about all of the noise those air hammers and cordless drivers generate. Eric, take care of your ears. Even if you wear noise cancelling ear buds, that will help a lot. Mowing the grass, using your weed whacker, blowing leaves, using a chainsaw, and the snowblower too. Take a hint, if you are constantly asking family and friends to repeat themselves, it might not be you're just dense, you may actually have a hearing problem. Who new? Thanks man. Great video!

That ones different. Thats for the chevys or e clips. If its a ford or another type of "quick connect" its a different tool. Kinda works the same tho. Jus saying in case you have the same tool for a different application or vise versa

Here's wishing that truck's driver a very cool summer with the A/C repairs. That rear brake mess in Josh's bay is scary looking. I guess it's good that the owner finally brought the car in for repairs, before that car crashed and hurt people, so you guys have made your roads a bit safer, well done! That's like some of the "Just Rolled In" stuff.

Was only 1 outa bad out of 4 so no worries. Lol. Crazy though huh? As a mechanic myself having done 100+ brake jobs, ive seen some crazy ish that makes you think how the hell didnt this person know? But like josh said, the pedal felt fine, no adnormal sounds from the brakes

You are a wise man for checking the replacement part condition before removing the failed part. I’ve had a few new condensers that were unusable. And yes they are packaging them a lot better now. However the the plastic pieces that “snap” on the sides of the condenser don’t fit the new condensers very well due to the large welds on the new ones. Usually not a problem with a little plastic surgery/modification.

I hate fussing with those little plastic clips, and they do literally nothing for the condensers, and leaving them off doesn't really change anything. They're technically for anti-vibration and to keep the condenser in place, but the clips in the front of the radiator do that more than well enough unless they're busted.

Every mechanic likes everyones money. As long as its not fake and the customer isnt a royal pain in the ass. So much so that some of them sabotage cars or intentionally diag problems wrong so they can replace more than one thing/get them back in the shop. So ya you want a mechanic that loves what he does and takes pride in being honest and doing it right more than he loves money

My 03 Camry had the problem and how s 6 episodes series saved my life. Couldn't have done it with them, step by step almost 3 hours.

My 03 Camry had the problem and his 6 episodes series saved my life. Couldn't have done it with them, step by step almost 3 hours.

As a GM tech myself I have asked myself countless times why GM continues to have us replace faulty components with the same faulty components and repeat repairs. It just pisses me off. GM needs to do better on so many different levels

The Chevy dealer here uses aftermarket condensers. They say they have better luck with them and that it was requested by the techs. I ordered 3 more this week. They do a bunch of them.

I'm having a hard time finding the GM part number so I can replace those plastic safety "stay on there" clips that Eric is calling the jiffy clips for transmission cooler connections. I suppose there are different sizes too, but I can't find any size at all. Any help GM guys?

Maybe GM needs to have work for the service dept .GM is not going to throw away their faulty inventory.Manufacters only do recalls on equipment that can cause injury.

@@notsevenfeettall the reality is that for the first 2 years, warranty and dealer concerns are actively managed and engineering often makes changes..in future models. When a vehicle is released, especially a truck, the new release is in 5 years, and that vehicle is already 50% complete, so if it's deemed to be something engineering can improve, you may not even see it in that release (unless it's expensive to GM). Also, Engineering may have decided that their part design was fine but the supplier built it badly or not so spec, that is a purchasing problem, not an engineering problem. If that condenser design had issues in 2015, in all likeliehood it's fixed on the T100 platform (2020 or newer)

There are a number of faulty condensers on the market in the newer GMC/Chevy trucks as well including some with the R1234yf systems. Great video. Thumbs up

You gotta love the brand loyal guys that are blind to the fact their stuff breaks down as much as anyone else's... Another You Tuber is always getting on Euro cars when they break down but he loves Subarus... That he always has in his shop. The latest one...with a cracked valve? Good guy. Great diagnostician. Excellent videos. But.... Give it up already. It doesn't matter where they come from or who makes them. They all break. Every one of them.

@@Resistculturaldecline that's just it. I have had cars of many makes. They all did about the same. Little stuff here and there. I've had Fords, Chevys, Toyota, Nissan, Opel, many VWs. Have had little problems from all. All about the same. Two Fords and a VW now. Just sold a 2006 Jetta with 170,000 on it. Still on the stock alternator and even stock brakes! It's all what people want to believe.

Cars are pretty much all the same. Unless they're electric, they all have an engine which is a just a big air pump, a transmission, wheels, etc, and they're all put together with nuts and bolts. Though the procedures may be a little different, the concept is the same

Great vid Eric. I just had a GMC 2014 that needed a marker bulb. What a nightmare. Also my customer has 186,000 miles on it with the original tranny fluid. Talk about black. I also recommended a fluid replacement, but he said he’d take care of it. You know how that goes. Oh well I can only recommend. Thanks for sharing.

I had a good laugh when the plastic retainer flipped up and into the engine compartment. My luck has been that it doesn't hit the floor and I spend half my time searching for the dang thing. Also, for some reason I was enjoying the Whack-a-Mole game near the end of the video. Happy 4th of July!

Great video. As a GM tech I have seen dozens of those turds leak. Warranty cut the time so bad, we found a "flat-rate" way to do it. Looks like a nice vegetable garden growing in the radiator. Keep grinding brother!

Suck her down, pop the hoses off, take the top bolts out and lean the sucker back to slide the condenser out, right? Take about fifteen minutes if you're used to it. Had a slew of these things come in a few weeks ago, did about fifteen of them in two days.

The biggest issue with working on an A/C system yourself is the recovery and recharging. You always want to recover as much refrigerant ad possible, and without the machines at the shops you really can't, and if you crack the lines open (undo the bolts holding the lines into the condenser or any other part of the system) you'll get refrigerant everywhere, and it's really, really bad for you and for the environment. We use it because normally it's entirely contained and not a risk to us, but when it leaks, you really don't want the stuff on your skin. The new R-1234y type is much less detrimental to the enviromment than the old R-134a type, but it's not good for you, and if you pop the lines off without drawing it all out, you may end up inhaling some and you don't wanna do that. If you've got an AC machine, go for it. If not, let a shop do it. The machines tend to run around 3K for the R-134a and between 5-8K for the R-1234y type. Well, the Robinair ones used in my shop do anyway.

Saw you drop that screwdriver down the radiator and I had a bad memory. Reminded me when I was in college 68-71 driving a Fairlane SC. Water was pouring out of my original radiator and could not afford a new one. I think it was $23.00 new. Scrounge around a junkyard and found one that was dry and would fit my application. After installation, I started looking for leaks and an unidentifiable screwdriver fell down and put a hole in my used rad. Went back to the JY and asked for another radiator. $7.00 for the first one destroyed, 2nd one was $5.00 hearing the counter crew laughing their aces off as I ran to my buds car w/rad. Finally installed the 2nd rad. in the College parking lot, loaded my clothes heading home for the holidays. Life is full of lessons, boy did I learn one that day.

Those other shops got him going again with a recharge and dye to get cool a/c , but in the long run problem was not solved. Glad to see a repair done correctly , and with the experience to know where to check for leaks .

I did this job on my 2016 a month ago. It took me much longer than Eric which is no surprise. My one suggestion is to go ahead and buy a new set of seals, they not included with the AC Delco condenser. I couldn’t get mine to hold a vacuum until I replaced them. I would characterize this as a very advanced DIY job and you must have all of the AC tools to do it.

I Love all your videos as I've been an Auto Tech for about 40 years and Now retired I do miss fixing cars but I don't miss the MEAN CUSTOMERS IF YOU know what I mean I had my own gas station of course when they were a full service. Then went to a Ford Dealer for my remaining years .You are an EXCELLENT TECH . I had such a Bad Attitude it Destroyed me in the Dealer as it's doing to the remaining guys left in the Dealer but changed the Name. I wish they were TREATED ALot BETTER FOR there HARD WORK and have stood up for all of them at one point or another till they had to fire or lay-off all of us BEFORE OUR 10 YEAR VACATIONS and Benifits .How CONVENIENT IS That ??? But I did cause them alot of issues after I was layed-off .Cuz they treated US SO BADLY . and of COURSE NO ANSWERS so they Shut down offices EVEN !!!! HMMMM.

I can’t believe this! My 2015 Silverado LTZ with 62,000 kilometres on it is falling apart ! Oddly, this video of yours and the one on the power windows I watched 10 minutes ago is what is going on. BTW , my truck has never been winter driven, that’s what keeps the mileage down. So , in July , my truck was at dealership for side curtain air bag recall. I was in Alberta for 2 weeks while they had it before I got back to Ontario. About 3 days later the A/C stopped working. Knowing they had the battery disconnected, all my dash , radio and the like were wiped out. This happened before when they did the rear sliding window/defrost recall. Nothing showing up , I pumped some Freon to it, it worked for 2 days. As well , I can’t find it even tho I know the condenser issue. Now , actually 2 weeks ago the driver power widow quit, makes drive thru impossible but since it being parked this weekend, the repairs can wait till the spring. I hope I can aquire the wiring diagram to test the switch, as you say , it’s relatively cheap but I can realize a draw when I activate the switch as I can hear blower and lights dim. Being a retired mechanic I have no issues doing this work but not having all the test information is making some repairs prohibitive. Thanks for your channel Eric, not are you only teaching this dog new tricks , your honesty and integrity emulates the 45 plus years I thought I was like. If I don’t get a chance to respond to another video this year, Merry Christmas to you and Mrs O and your family

I dont usually comment on videos. Im not big on that. If I don't like something, I simply change the channel. I have to tell you though, I've been watching your videos and have been a subscriber for awhile now and I find you and the work you do so relaxing. I'm not sure why. When I work on my own cars my blood pressure is usually through the roof and I'm always swearing and breaking things, but for some reason when I watch you do it I'm so relaxed. The sound of your voice, maybe watching you solve problems, Im not really sure what it is. But I felt the need to thank you. I'm no good at sleeping. Even when I was a kid, I've never been able to stay asleep. Your videos help Sooooo much. Not cause they're boring. I find working on cars is anything but boring. The opposite. It's so interesting. Especially watching you chase down wiring and electrical issues. Im really not good at that, but I enjoy watching you figure things out as you always do. I can't believe a shop in a major city would be so irresponsible on not correcting a leak and just recharging a system. I'll admit I had a 2012 F250 evaporator get me. I charged it with dry nitrogen and it held pressure for over 3 hours, passed vacuum test. So I charged it and sent it on its way. 2 months later it came back and through process of elimination I condemned the evaporator, Ya completely disassemble the dash to change it. I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!

GM has a new thermostat for the oil cooler bypass. Highly recommended to change it out for the new one. The original bypass thermostat is why a lot of the 6-speeds have problems (and why they cook the fluid worse than ever). It's a 5 minute part change.

I wouldn't even recommend gm's update. Ive seen plenty of people in a 14+ gm truck group im in complain about high trans temps even after doing the updated thermostat. I put the sure cool kit in my truck and it doesn't go over 150 on a hot day. The real problem with these 6l80s in the gm trucks is the torque converter. But the high temps dont help

@@sbc_jake_9677 The high trans fluid temps eventually damage the torque converter clutch friction material. Between how often they lock the converter and the tall axle ratios they use these days, the TCC doesn't hold up long. 200F+ is way too hot no matter what some people say.

Loved at 2:29 when the snap bounced perfectly into the engine bay! Same thing happened to me when working on my CR-V's radiator. So glad that Eric keeps in the goof-ups in his vids. Great video. It’s truly sad how inferior the quality is on GM products in recent years compared to what they use to be. They care less and less about quality and providing a positive long term value for their customers, and only seem to care about planned obsolescence to suck every sale and every dollar they can out of people. Toyota’s are some of the best quality made vehicles on the planet, and even their new vehicles are being made lower quality than in previous years; all thanks to government idiocy interference and corporate greed.

Also there are a lot of ppl that are die had chevy/gm and thats all they ever bought and all they ever will buy no matter what. A lot of them dont care how much worse they quality has gotten, they are loyal to the brand, they will just defend their purchase and the brand saying all manufactures are the same/building cheaper quality products and charging more for them. Every manufacture has their customers that are brand loyal regardless. Some ppl are smarter than others and will do their research first, some just dont care as long as it has that logo on it

just changed a trans cooler line on my wife's envoy 3 days ago. those clips suck big time when they are all corroded being oem from 2008. one was leaking and there's 4 total. i only changed the 1 for now till i feel like crawling on my gravel laneway for the other 3. now just waiting for enough ambition to kick in. love the videos and the work you do. i've learned a lot lol thank you

I love my Chevys they are pretty durable, I put 300k on many transmissions. The motors are strong, but the ac systems on these Chevys are junk. If it isn't the condenser it's the compressor, if it's not the compressor it's the accumulator if it's not all those it's the lines...🤦♂️ And I hate the oil coolant line that goes to the radiator, those leak like crazy if you don't use OEM, and it's hard to find good OEM lines 🤬🤦♂️

It's "genuine AC Delco," but not the OEM part. 🙂 However, if you get this job done at a GM dealership, this is probably the condenser they will install. The one I work at does and I know many others do as well. I have no idea if this AC Delco Professional part is any better or worse than the OEM part. Your conversation with the other tech regarding those brake rotors was hilarious!

AC Delco professional is a lower/cheaper line than regular AC Delco. And Regular AC Delco is the OEM part. All OEM parts for GM are either AC Delco for most things such as service item and common wear items, and for more speciality things they are Genuine GM parts. No different than Motorcraft and Genuine Ford for Ford vehicles
