In this video I have a look at a Chevrolet Cruze with the big 1.4 turbo engine that was dropped off with the customer complaint of running hot. They also said they had it back to the dealer several times for "loud cooling fan." The dealer said it was working as it should. -Enjoy!

The Chevy Cruze from I think 2014 and 2015 had a bad batch of water pumps when I read last year. My sister 2015 Chevy Cruze had her water pump leak like that and took it to the dealer, they looked at it then said they'll just put a new one on it for free.
@pongo1372

@@A1rs1ckWater pump is covered by special warranty on almost all Cruze. I had the water pump replaced on my 2012 and on my wife's 2013. This is why dealer is able to undercharge SMA. Cruze cooling system is a nightmare. Leaks will occur at the water pump, at the overflow tank return list(Plastic fitting), at the cap(o-ring too small, not enough squeeze). The overflow tank will crack, it's only a matter of time. Don't get this car if you don't have a friendly mechanic or are mechanically inclined. The intake manifold check valve will fail. The valve cover pcv will then fail as well. The only thing I have not seen is the cooling fan failure. My 2012 is at 100,000 miles right now.

Exactly, I would rather pay a little more and have Eric do it and it be done right rather than the dealer do it. From experience, the dealer don't give a rats behind about your or your vehicle, they just wanna get the job done as fast and efficient as possible. The dealers leave alot of mistakes on their part hidden. Just watching and listening to Eric you know the man takes a great deal of pride in his work, and not just because his business is on the line either, it's because he is an honest, hard working guy. I wished I lived closer to him.

Not all dealerships are bad, just like not all indie shops are good. Dealerships have a bad rep due to their fluctuating quality of work which is caused by a constantly revolving door of techs. Mr. O doesnt have that issue, since he has 1 or 2 other mechanics that share in his standard of high quality work, but Mr. O also doesnt have the high work load that most dealerships have. I'm not trying to make excuses for dealerships, I'm simply stating a reason for dealerships fluctuating quality of work.

I have experienced this myself with my Hyundai. The shop supervisor at the dealership doesn't want to take the time to diagnose these intermittent problems unless there is a computer code associated with the problem. They refused to fix the failing throttle position sensor in my car until it threw a code. I even told the supervisor that it was probably the throttle position sensor but they didn't even try to reproduce the failure. A week after I took the car in for service, the car finally threw a TPS code and the dealership finally replaced the bad TPS in my car under warranty.

PickleRix Here's the deal with the dealer: you said it was warranty, there were no DTC's set. The manufacturer will NOT let a dealer just start changing parts under warranty, there has to be a code set before the manufacturer will cover the cost under warranty, or it has to be broken, verifiable through photos if need be.
@footbalineman58
@footbalineman58 4 жыл бұрын
PickleRix Ralfie is right, and the problem is more complicated and deeper than it is. Intermittent problems are always frustrating on both the customer and the dealer tech. The problem with warranty is that they don’t pay well at all, and without a code the tech does not get paid for diagnosis, period. You can submit for a request but at times it’s not even worth the hassle. You also can’t just replace parts when the problem is not current, even if it is the culprit. So after that tech spends, let’s say an hour, trying to duplicate the problem and no codes set, that tech is basically working for free and becomes frustrated (who wouldn’t?). And on the customer end they just want it fixed right the first time and not feel like the dealership doesn’t care and they are not looking at thoroughly. It ultimately depends on how the dealership handles their techs and the customer and not just dollar signs. Life would be a beach at a dealer without intermittent problems

@@picklerix6162 Is it just a thing to hate dealerships or something because what you just said seemed completely reasonable for a dealership to do. Warranty claims have to be inspected and verified, dealerships cannot go based on your word that you have a throttle body position sensor that is bad and just give you a new one because you know what happens if that is not the problem? the deanship would end up eating the cost of that part and labor to install that part, or in a worse case you would end up eating that. In any automotive mechanic industry a problem cannot be fixed without replicating the problem and then diagnosing it based on the problem that is persisting, that means the problem has to be experienced by the technician before he can do anything with your vehicle that is how it works. Tooo many people go to these places saying it's x,y or z problem and it is not.

"half price" water pump and thermostat is probably still covered under powertrain warranty. cooling fan probably not. I've been struggling this year trying to figure out my next move. I love fixing cars but the dealership life isn't for me anymore. the last thing i want to do is become gm world class then probably look else where. Flat rate at the dealership is a joke. The way they treat their staff. The way they try selling junk used cars a premium price hoping the customer buys an extended warranty to what the seller knows is wrong with the car when they put it up for sale... My dream would to become a diagnostician like you, ivan, keith, and so on... i've learned a lot watching everyone's videos. I've worked as a VW tech at a dealship for over 10 years, and I'm starting to look for alternatives. The service time is cut down each year, while they shove more into the inspection check list. They claim they can't afford to give us a higher salary, while the corporation in charge of the dealership sat with about $50 mill they didn't know what to do with, after cutting costs and firing (quite) a few employees... I'm pretty sure the grass is just as brown on the other side of the river, so I'm not sure if it'll help to switch brands, and independent shops in my country are supposed to be even worse than the dealships...

Had a vehicle that had no codes, but timing chain went. I get vehicle back, now it runs but stalls, and check engine light is on. I check the code it complains of coolant temp sense out of range. I return it to mechanic, he "fixes" it again for another 300 dollars, and it still stalling and check engine light is on. Same code is throwing. I tell him this time that the OBDI is reporting a temp error and he says it is throwing several codes, and that it is likely the fuel pump. Strange, it was only flashing one at me. So, I decide to pop the hood, go to the temp sensor right by thermostat housing, unplug and replug it in. Boom. Check engine light off, vehicle ran fine. This dude, whom I've had fix my vehicles, my sons, friends, was trying get more money for no work. I even commented to him how does engine management go nuts with a mechanical repair like a timing chain. It burns people... I'm so distrustful now, It really sucks. @@rusty1187 To be fair, if the car was needing the B2S2 O2 sensor it's not too long before all the others fall out of spec too. O2 sensors are good for 100k and then at that point they're all plated in carbon and ZDDP and fail to oscillate rapidly. I like to do sets and pairs all at once. One injector goes bad? Replace them all. Coil pack goes bad? All. O2 sensors? All. Shock blows out its oil? All 4 corners. Ruined LCA bushing? Both sides, new control arms. Diff seals or axle shaft seals leaking? All of them get replaced. Caliper leaking? Both sides of that axle get done. It just makes no sense for me to pull everything apart multiple times or deal with imbalances.

Clearly none of you know how auto repair works, or how dealership labor rates work. Here’s a hint, if there’s no codes, it cannot be fixed under warranty. The codes are required in order for the dealership to get paid. Now, for the diagnosis, the dealer tech 9/10 works flat rate (book time) and with warranty times, you get 0hrs for diagnosis. Why would a tech waste his time, for free, to TRY to replicate an intermittent issue? If it pulls in with no codes, for warranty, good luck getting it looked at. I’m sure none of you work for free and neither does that tech. He’d rather do jobs that pay the bills, not jobs where customers assume something is wrong but have 0 codes.

As an owner of a 2012 Cruze, fun to see Eric diagnose this one. Many years of this car have an extended warranty on the water pump of 10 years 120,000 miles. Check the dealer. The fan relay kit is available from Eric's favorite auto supplier Dorm. there might be others that make this relay block, vs. having to remove and install an entire fan assembly. Last but not least is the gasket on the coolant bottle. Most don't think of this. If it doesn't have resistance when installing the cap, it's not sealing against 20 psi pressure. Either replace the coolant cap o-ring or the entire cap. Water pump leaks out the front of the bearing weep hole, look for tell tail dried coolant on the timing cover, and engine support bracket. Thanks for another great video.

Hey Eric! Great diagnose, that's the proper way to do it. Here in Europe i have seen this engine alot in vauxhalls. These 1.4 turbo engines are notorious for coolant leaks. Specially all connections behind the turbo, but waterpump and thermostats fail aswell. I think the problem lies in this ridiculous high temperature they run these engines. 225 F is just cooking... every rubber O-ring or gasket is just cooked to plastic and will leak.

@TheGhostTrollek dejvu Flat Rate pay system for the mechanics in the dealerships, you get paid so much per hour and then they’ll get say - 4.5 hours for a job and if it takes 10 you’ll only get paid the 4.5. Also the dealership won’t get as much for warranty work, same as if you are a mechanic and you parts store gives you a labour claim on a faulty part they’ll give you a set time and rate, which is normally a lot less than what you charge. For this type of fault it maybe give you something terrible like 0.25 of a hour to diagnose so none of the techs want it, so someone low down the pecking order probably ends up with it. Yep that's right unsurprisingly the Dealers screw the people working for them too!
