My brother had an old Blazer that had starting problems especially on rainy days. It was night and I cracked the hood open a bit and asked him to start her up. With his two boys standing next to me gawking inside under the hood all I could hear was "wow, Uncle Ed". It was a light show under there, flashes everywhere you looked, like looking down on a thunderstorm from the space station.

@@bmulder8830 you have to change ignition wires every so often since the insulation starts to break down and they start to leak electricity, eventually car won't start. There's also a big gang plug on my bros blazer with a T-handle on the firewall iirc, water can infiltrate it and give you all kinds of problems, brake lights, power door locks and windows etc.

"Umph": Old skool term for compression. Used in a sentence: "It's got no umph" I've owned many gas engines like that Chevy featured in the vid, including a small block 350 Suburban. I was mostly a MOPAR guy owning vehicles with slant 6s and 318s. No matter what make I owned between the "Big 3" auto makers, they were very easy to diagnose and work on and inexpensive to maintain. I remember when starters and alternators were rebuilt and sold for a song and dance of $20-50 back when. Now in the present, you add a zero to those prices that I listed. If you own old and it's fixable, keep it, fix it and keep driving it. It's worth it. Thanks again Dave!

Ha ha ha. Excellent Dave. 👍🏼👍🏼 I think everyone has an old ignition story. Mine is similar to everyone’s. 72 ford ltd wont’t start / run when it had rained. Cracked the hood and had them crank it. The old original motorcraft wires were leaking lightning everywhere. Luckily I had brought the economy size WD-40. I hosed every wire, spark plug to cap, waited 5 minutes for the silicone to displace the moisture and the car started. I gave them the spray can to keep in the car and told them to get me a good 8mm replacement set of wires. Two weeks and another paycheck in their pocket later, and I showed them how to replace their wires one at a time. Good memories. Thank you Dave. ❤️🙏🏼

@@DavesAutoCenterCentervilleI appreciate seeing someone who will actually take the time to work on "the old stuff". So many can't be bothered if it can't be read on a code reader. I love my old sled, but finding someone who doesn't just send you down the road to get you out of their hair is a challenge itself. I dread the day when I have to buy something so "new and improved" that I cannot even check the oil level properly.

I had a 1993 Dodge Caravan with that sweet little 2.5 Chrysler and a 5 speed stick. I believe in if it ain't broke don't fix it. It started giving me trouble, especially in wet weather. I looked under the hood one rainy night to see a light show. The next time it rained I barely made it home. I bought new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and a battery. The 48 month battery was 9 years old. The plugs had burned the electrodes right off. She hadn't had a tune up since new but after that she ran like new again. The clutch went over 220,000 miles. That little minivan was a real trooper.

Had a guy broke down in front of an automotive parts store. It was a humid misty day. I had him get in the car trying to start it and you could see the coil had a lightning ark through a crack in the coil and it was shorting itself out.. The guy said he only had trouble when it was raining and couldn’t figure out what it was. I got in it and cranked it over so he could see the crack and arching. about 20 minutes later he come out with a new coil and installed it in the car and it ran fine. Nowadays, it takes some high-tech diagnostic machine to figure it out.

Years ago at a bus garage owned by the school district, they had a series of engine failures over period of two years. Long story short, I found out that number five was firing number seven and that was the reason they were breaking cranks and cracking pistons. They were remanufactured engines from a local engine builder. He knew what the problem was but he never told them. So once I found out what the issue was and they changed the wires on most of the engines the engine problem went away. Lots more to the story but you have the meat of it.

1989 K-Blazer. Bought one new in Austin and put 235,000 miles on it before I had to get a four door (Yukon) for the family. Great truck. Wish they still made them.

Why do old cars look so beautiful, I was around when this thing was new, and at the time it was nothing special, now it's beautiful. A lot of newer cars look great too, especially percentage wise.

Just make sure it’s top dead center n check for vacuum leaks, plugs you’ll hear them, gas you’ll hear it, idk I’ve learned with older trucks that just noticing a back fire or odd rumble was enough for me to know what’s goin on, . Love your tips, soapy water saves lives

My first car was a 71 Charger 440. I had to let it go because I couldn't afford the gas and weekly repairs. I got an 82 Plymouth Horizon 2.2. Half the cylinders, a fraction of the HP and four times the wires and hoses. I still liked it, it just wasn't the same.

Another word of advice when working on older vehicles. Before you pull out any of the Fancy Nancy tools any of the testing devices whether it's an electronic or compression testing devices. Yes I am only 20 but I've dealt with two generations of mechanics in 1994 f250. And the things that have been unplugged for certain reasons. Is just astonishing and sometimes that can be part of your problem and plugging those back in can help you make the correct diagnosing of what's wrong with the engine. On top of that with older vehicles turn to be owned by older people that like to work on their own vehicles when it comes to simple things. Nate passed away vehicle gets passed down to the next generation. They thought they were able to pay enough attention to grandpa doing it turns out they got cylinder one spark plug wire on cylinder 5 and cylinders 5 spark plug wires on cylinder one. Or when they tried to replace the points and the cat and they got the wires mixed up.

Fun fact: our jet skis run perfect at the lake but sometimes they run terrible as soon as you get to the ocean. Take the hood off after sunset and the salt water will show you lightning all over the place under the hood. We use self vulcanizing tape to insulate it if we are desperate but fresh coils would be the way to go to get fresh plug wires.

Back when i was a young lad. I was driving my vw powered by a vr6 in the snow when it started to misfire. I pulled over opened the hood and from what i know now is my coil pack, was coming hair line white flashes. I asked myself, what the heck is that? I went in with my index finger to find out that it was electricity. Oh i felt those shocks in every one of my holes.
