Finally got some parts in for the 1965 Chevy II Nova Wagon, one of which is the inner fender kit. I went with the CPP inner fenders . . . well for one reason, they were the cheapest I could find. I know I know, buy cheap get cheap, but common it's just some sheet metal inner fenders, they don't have to do much other than close up the engine bay.
If only they were as easy to install as I anticipated that they should have been, but all in all, I figured out how to make them work . . . for me at least. If you are considering these for your project, please please please do yourself a favor and watch this video, worst case you'll see where I screwed up which wasted a good bit of time and you'll have an idea of what it takes to get these installed.
And if you read this much of my description and watch the video enough to have the interest to read the description, go hit that subscribe button!

15:22 original inner fender has a rubber seal from edge to firewall. Keeps the dust & moisture out.

Yeah and I will likely add something similar to close that gap up, maybe get some rubber strip about 2in wide and rivet to the panels once I have them all sorted out.

You gotta love mass production and universal parts without instructions or an idea why

Sad part is that these aren't even "universal" 62-65 chevy ii specific. But yeah, quality of parts just isn't that great. But hey bright side, gives me a reason to sharpen up some skills I don't use very often.

As soon as I figured out the spacers, mine needed some work but not as much as yours, not sure why... Minor flapwheel and uni bit work...

Good to know not everyone has had to suffer when buying these. In the end I am making them workout really well for me. Never would have considered the idea of grafting the stock battery tray location into the new inner had they bolted up correctly out of the box. Still alot more work than I was expecting on this part of the project. But that's usually how it goes.

I have the CPP in mine had to do some minor trimming, but it's fine. Went right in no big deal. It'll look good, bro.

The CCP kit has the tubular upper A arms. You OEM A Arms are much wider & higher because of the control shaft bushings & nuts.

Huh, maybe I just got a bad set, because these have taken alot more than just a little trimming to get to fitup. Good to know that at least some good ones are out there.

The kits from "back in the day" were available using stock style arms to cut the cost down and this is an older front clip that was taken off another Chevy II as the owner was going to a strut style setup. That said the clearance cutout on the inner fender panel is plenty clear of the control arm without any issues at all, so this is definitely not contributing to the poor fitment at all.

Trim to fit on all kits for the type of change over.

I expected some trim to fit, but for bends to be the wrong direction and have to cut them off and re-weld a new flange is more than "trim to fit".

I also have those fender liners I bought them 6 years and they didn’t fit then either so the manufacturing hasn’t changed, they’ve been collecting dust ever since

Glad to hear I'm not alone. It was terribly frustrating trying to sort out the fitment with how they showed up. After I said screwing and starting cutting it apart it wasn't too bad, just not what I expected. Currently re-working the passenger side and it's a good bit more fun now that I let the frustration over the poor fitment out of my system.

@@OneMoreBolt I’m curious if mine have the front bend inward or outward
@OneMoreBolt
@OneMoreBolt 5 ай бұрын
@@HernandoHotRods You'll have to go knock the dust off and and find out. If it's going outward cut that crap off, fitup and weld or bolt a new piece bent inward and they should be usable. Might still need some massaging but they will atleast be in the right neighborhood. haha

Just wanting to ask but could you have broke over the top of inner fenders that came with heidts subframe if you had a brake and it work? When you said CPP I new this wasn’t going to be good for you!
@OneMoreBolt
@OneMoreBolt 5 ай бұрын
Me personally, even if I had a break, I probably could have because it's not a straight like, the break actually has to have a roll in it as well to match the fender line between the cowl and the core support. Also not sure if there is enough material for that. I should have known not to take the chance on the CPP parts, but hey it's turning into good practice on some so skills that I need to get better at. Plus I'm really liking the way the passenger side is starting to come out.
@SpeedWrenchGarage
@SpeedWrenchGarage 5 ай бұрын
@@OneMoreBolt I thinking that braking that over, or cutting the that piece off one of your old subframe and welding it to the heidts. But you got good fabrication practice.
@OneMoreBolt
@OneMoreBolt 5 ай бұрын
@@SpeedWrenchGarage I didn't think about reworking the top of the '66-'67 inners with the top edge from the old subframe. Yeah that would have been a doable solution too. Huh. But yeah, more valuable than the parts was putting the skills to work and getting some practice. I don't do anywhere near enough of that kind of work to be as good as I like to be. Trying to change that though and these inner fenders gave me just the opportunity. The Passenger side will definitely be more of challenge with wanting to add the stock battery location to the new panel as well. So we'll see how that comes out.

I noticed you put the spacers on in the back of the hood hinge mount, you test fit the hood yet?
@OneMoreBolt
@OneMoreBolt 5 ай бұрын
Not yet, that's on my soon to do list. Almost have the inner fenders sorted out. Once they are good then it'll be onto the hood hinges. Hopefully, that isn't too bad! I'm certain I have the spacers in the right place, not sure they are the right thickness. Once I start checking the hinge spacing I'll be able to get that sorted. Probably 2 weeks until that hits YT, probably going to be doing that work this upcoming weekend.
