It can be an absolute nightmare to remove the dash in some vehicles, just to access the HVAC system. Let the CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ explain how Dodge totally nailed it when they designed the 2005 RAM truck!

True story. My Dad was a Tech for a Mercedes dealership. There was one particular model that the book said took 12 hours to replace the heater core. Dad could do it in 2. Mercedes actually sent a team to watch him do this and wound up rewriting the manual after seeing his process. He was incredibly good. A Master Guild Mechanic. Only a few in the US. They sent him to Germany every few years to learn the new cars to teach the rest of the mechanics here.

@@nathan40307 Are we talking about book time or actual time to do the job? Didn't you say your dad did it in two hours? By rewriting the book, it does screw over the techs that can do the job faster. That's how that works. We learn shortcuts and hopefully don't snitch to the manufacturer so not to screw over the other techs that know the shortcut. This is a very common practice. You're saying your dad is one in a few techs that could figure out this shortcut? How do you know that?
@nathan40307
@nathan40307 Жыл бұрын
@@johnbrown1381 The dealership noticed that he was doing these jobs so quickly. Somehow Mercedes got involved because they didn't believe he could do these properly in that short of time. So they came to investigate. They brought a brand new car in that didn't even need the work and asked him to show them how he did it. This is not as uncommon as it sounds. After they rewrote the process it made it so the techs could do the job faster and move on to other jobs and make more money. Nobody lost.

Dear Car Wizard, the fact that I can rarely ever trust the shops around me to do competent work has made me become my own mechanic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. It's kind of funny, but the last honest mechanic I ever heard of in the once Golden State of California was coincidentally Lash LaRue's own personal mechanic when he made 'Return of the Lash' with Buster Slaven in 1947. So. maybe you are selling yourself short in your life's experience and you have something you could tell us all about your legendary Dad and his big car collection in a future comment, Lash Jr. We will all be standing by.

I'm in the car parts business and visit many repair shops every week..that includes dealerships ..and the mom and pops. What I found is that there are quality repair shops out there. .look for the shops that are always busy and stay away from the chain repair shops. The ones that advertise on TV or send out endless mailings for oil changes..they have overhead to pay for..they will surely overcharge you or do work that isn't needed. Ask people at the repair shops about their experience..your car..your money..don't be in such a hurry to throw your money at the first guy with a wrench.

I actually enjoy the electrical puzzles people royally screw up. few good stories I bought a police Durango that had been sitting for a few years. The Dept brought it to the Dodge dealer due to 02 sensor codes. The Dodge dealer put a new pcm into it, but was unable to program keys and get the truck ever running again. The department bricked it and sold it as a non runner. I bought it from them. Repair was, the skim module had no power going to it. The fuse was blown some how. Replaced the fuse and programmed the keys. Started right up. The 02 sensor codes, had 2 bad 02 sensors and a broken wire on the 3rd. 😂 Second one, friend runs a landscape business. He does work for another company, and wrenches on their trucks. F250 he was not able to get to was looked at by another shop for a no crank. They gave the owner a $1500 bill for diagnosis and said "we are no further along than when we started". Would you like us to continue. Declined and they picked it up and brought it to my buddies shop. I looked at it, no communication. Checked power and grounds to the scan tool. The truck was missing a fuse 🙃and the pcm power relay wires were rotted off it. I repaired all that and left it with him in running condition. Turns out it was an intermittent no start. The shifter was so sloppy it was allowing it to move the mlps enough to indicate not in park, but the indicator still showed park.

Adult Legos. That's the term I used recently when teaching my 15 year old how to replace the clutch in his future car. About half way through disassembly he had this look of dread and asked "how do we put this all back together?" "Adult Legos." As we took stuff apart, I put the various bits and pieces (mostly the screws and nuts and bolts) into bins in those 8/15/20 parts organizers, numbered and labeled them. Assembly is 99% reverse of disassembly, and it keeps you from having leftovers. :D And sadly, I grok the lack of "trustworthy" shops. At least around here it's not so much trustworthiness, but they're all so busy with meat and potatoes jobs (brakes, oil changes, tires, suspension, "bolt on boys" stuff basically) that none of them want to risk tying up a bay for a couple days to solve some of the bigger jobs. in terms of dollars per hour, the return isn't there. I get it, but it sucks.

My 07 Chrysler Aspen's rear actuator broke (in the hot position) like you describe and I replaced it with an aluminum door from a company in Michigan (I can't remember their name). Works great now. I hope I don't have to replace any under the dash. It is too bad the factory does not use aluminum doors. It really would not add that much to the cost.

I own one of these trucks and I'm willing to bet I know why the recirculation door was missing. Those have a very infamous and well known failure mode known amongst the Dodge truck forums and communities. Whenever that door fails, it almost always falls down in such a way to where it blocks like 70% of the airflow coming out of the vents. The typical fix is remove 3-4 screws from blower motor, that door will fall out into your hands, reinstall blower motor. You now have all of your airflow back with the recirculation mode no longer being functional. I also really like the way the interiors and just how these trucks overall are setup. They come apart in easy steps, all of the panels are held in with metal clips and screws. Very easy vehicles to work on.

Really well made video Wizard! It used to drive me nuts the service writers would love to bring the customers in the back to show off how torn apart their vehicle was. It’s just not a good idea. Didn’t matter if that squeak or dash rattle was already there. I swear only when the customer saw how torn apart the vehicle was they would develop super power hearing for any rattle or mouse fart squeak. They’d be back a week later asking to go for a drive with the tech to hear a noise.

They don't technically have to be all metal to prevent this fault (obviously do all metal if you as a technician are going to be standing behind this job). However as the manufacturer if Dodge put a metal ring around the socket side and sunk a metal support into the pin side it probably would last the life of the vehicle. I have seen a repair on the dodge minivans where you get a metal ring from a fountain pen and slip it over that socket on the flap so it cannot split. Very interesting that the dash comes out easily in these. Next up, make the air conditioning with a little door so the flap can slide out while it is in the vehicle.

There's a lot more of them out there then you think. But you're right. Finding them is the problem. Your best bet is to get to know the people in your dealers service department. Start with your service writer, then come up with a reason to meet the tech that's working on your car. You want to be the customer that everyone likes and wants to help. Then, keep requesting the same tech to work on your car. It makes the tech feel really good that you want him working on your car, and it makes him more valuable to the dealership. Anyway, that's your best chance to build a good relationship. You're probably wondering why I recommend your dealer. And the answer is simple. Knowledge and training. Vehicles are changing so much each year, its very difficult to keep up. Someone like the Car Wizard is an exception. Very few aftermarket shops have dealership level tools and education. We get factory training every few months. Every day we get cars towed in from shops that have no idea how to fix them. Sometimes the tow truck drivers can't even get them off the truck without our help. That said, if you do find someone like the Wizard, use them. Providing they do the job right, you can save some money.

I have an ‘04 Ram that has these issues. Usually, the first thing that goes is the “Fresh Air/Recirc” flapper. It comes loose and falls down over the main air passage and you have to cut away part of the plastic grid to get to it and move it out of the way. I have done this and now I need to block the fresh air opening. This system utilizes a passage where all the air for heat still passes through the ac evaporator core. This core is usually halfway plugged with leaves and pine needles. I will fix it adequately one day.

They are a great alternative to buying a truck for towing. In Florida now its getting hard to find a good one but once in a while one shows up with less than 100k miles. The 5.7 with 4x4 and towing package was my favorite. But timing is everything, Ten years ago I found a really nice 08 Durango but the sales manager wasn't interested in taking in my Jeep TJ in trade.
