What's amazing to me is how much trouble the guy went through to get his vehicle to a repair shop he thought he could trust. If the owner from Virginia thinks the best guy for the job is in Kansas, there's a problem here.

I agree Wizard. I have a 2011 Dodge 2500 Cummins with clicking actuator in the dash. Like this customer, I will want every upgraded door, actuator, heater core and a/c components in the dash replaced. I’ll be calling crazy D about it. But I will personally drive my truck from West Virginia to Kansas to get the work done. NO SHIPPERS!! Great content as always Wizard!

When it comes to shipping, I will only ever use Montway. I've used several others, but they picked up one of my vehicles I bought at an auction and they accidentally hit a painted mirror. They paid to replace the mirror, not just some touch up paint, they replaced the mirror. I've never used anyone else ever again. Things happen, but what matters most to me is what the company does when it happens.

Montway is a broker. They have no rolling stock. They sub everything out on load boards like Central Dispatch and pay the lowest rates per mile in the industry. They didn’t buy you a mirror, they withheld payment from the guy that actually hauled your car.

Bought a 1977 cutlass 10 years ago with 4,600 miles in pristine condition. The shipper was professional and the whole neighborhood watched as this brand-new 1977 cutlass rolls out of the trailer. I'd drive it on Saturday to find garage sales and get comments. The shipping cost was a bit high but man that car unwrapped like a dream. Medium green with a white top.

I think reputable shippers will be expensive, but that's ok. It's the cheap fly-by-nighters you have to watch for. Your vehicle may even be "lost" in shipping. It's happened. There's cars that were supposed to to be shipped from California to say, Texas but ended up in South America..

These crappy trucking companies and drivers make us professional truckers look bad. Whether I'm dealing with a customer or my employer, I try to put myself in their place and look out for their best interests. Bad people work in every industry. I drive a nine car hauler. I'm listening to these stories thinking "yeeeaaah I've seen that before", but the worst ones are the bits of story where I'm thinking ".... Yeah I've been that guy". All of us are new at one point. Mistakes happen, you gotta learn from them, it's failing to learn that gets folks into real trouble. I like to tell folks "I'm a professional not because I've never made a mistake, but because I've made so many". A lot of these "low quality" shippers hire folks who don't care, are not trained, or just should not be running vehicular freight. Shipping cars is haaaard, and it's not for everyone.

It is almost the first weekend of summer and the Car Wizard had numerous vehicles that were dropped off at Omega Auto Clinic. I am definitely hoping for more videos of these vehicles that are coming into the shop for maintenance and/or repairs. For example, maybe the third-generation, 2019 Toyota Highlander AWD mid-size crossover with the 3.5 L V6 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission. The Car Wizard will hope that the customer of this vehicle took care of it properly, because these eight-speed automatic transmissions will be problematic sometimes. Anyway, keep up the great work at the Car Wizard shop. Thanks.

I've occasionally thought about getting into hauling cars for people. I like to drive, I like to tow. I'd only do single vehicles, and I'd do door-to-door. The problem is, every time I've looked into doing it, what I would need to charge to make even a mediocre profit would be far more (2x in some cases) what people want to pay. just to give some numbers as context i'll use some data from experience towing my own stuff, and a couple of friend's vehicles. I'm ~2000 miles from the Wizard. I get about 15mpg towing an open full steel 20' trailer with a 4000# car on it. Take fuel at $5/gal (gotta run premium when towing), pay $20/hr only on driving time (30.75 hours each way), that's $2560. That doesn't include insurance premiums, wear and tear on the rig, food, hotel, etc., all of which cut into that number. Now I know, most of these shippers haul more than 1 vehicle. It doesn't divide the costs as much as people think, until you get to hauling 10+ cars on a single rig and there's a single drop point. That truck especially with the cap on it, that was probably brought in on a triple goose neck.

I can relate to two things in this video. I, too, have an older Cummins Ram: my 1998.5 2500 that I special ordered, and had to wait six months for it. I'm working through a pretty good-sized list to keep it going, hopefully, for at least another 15 years. Vehicle shipping: I will only use Horseless Carriage. Your vehicle is loaded into an enclosed trailer, and is not touched until its driven out at the destination. Yes, they are not cheap. I used them on my 2nd car, after a bad time shipping my truck. I had used A to Z Auto Shipping. They were terrible. They don't tell you that your vehicle may be driven, at times, to various "collection points". They had left the door(s) open at sometime at one of these stops, long enough that a bunch of leaves blew into the cab. They, stupidly, backed it onto an open trailer, so that wind pressure from driving on the highways popped the hinged ARE fiberglass bed cover open (yes, it had been locked). They compounded that stupidity by bungie-cording the cover, gouging the tailgate with one of the hooks. Incredibly incompetent and callous.

After you receive your vehicle from the shipper, check all fluid levels immediately. The shipper that my in-laws used got a "clever" idea to lighten his load a little. To save a few dozen pounds of weight, he had drained most of the fuel, coolant and windshield washer fluid from all vehicles on the trailer. Absolutely ridiculous! We were furious! How can you drain coolant and not tell the customer about it?! Good thing I was there when the car was unloaded, I checked everything right away (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and I gave that shipper a piece of my mind. A few pieces, in fact! No damage to the engine, by the way, but how stupidly unprofessional! His response? "We do this all the time to lighten the load." Wow! OK dude. We will never do any business ever again.

Funny video. As a retired driver, 10 of those years spent in the automotive industry. Delivering cars to individuals, dealers, shows as well as running parts and prototypes. Many of those issues also happen the other way around. Arrive on time, they are not ready. Told there will be plenty of room and its easy to get to, then I am driving down a gravel road where my antennas are tapping the power lines and my trailer is clearing out trees. And the good old "paid on delivery", then told we were already paid. Then when finally proved we had not been paid, they go through everything they can to get the cost reduced or even wanting it for free. Digital camera's and nowadays it would be smart phones save a lot of hassles. There were times when I was late, accidents holding you up, mechanical failures, sometimes shit happens. We had the center driveshaft support bearing break off of a brand new, less than a thousand miles, International. Causing the truck to go down for weeks while fighting with them about it being a defect vs operator error. (We won in the end) So we had to transfer the load to another company. Putting the load behind almost 3 days. Nothing can be done about things like that. Communication was key, letting the customer know where I was and what was going in was a big help and reduced issues. So it goes both ways, honest trucking companies are about as easy to find as honest mechanics. Finding an honest car dealer, heh, well, might as well look for an honest lawyer or politician while you are looking.

I bought an 89 Country Squire from, of all places, a Ford dealer, several years ago and they hooked me up with what I was told was a reputable shipper. The company that shipped my car also shipped a bunch of other classic cars including a 1950s Thunderbird that they put on top of mine on the upper deck of the two-level car transporter. This Thunderbird dumped the entire contents of its oil pan all over the front windshield and hood of the Country Squire, which the transporter then wiped off so he could see with his gloved hands and then did NOT take his gloves off when moving my car around. I found ancient sludgy engine oil on all the inside of my car, including the steering wheel, door cards, seats, carpet, it was a mess. Luckily I was able to find a detailer that was open that day and they took the car in and got 90% of it out. There's still some slight stains on the door pulls and steering wheel leather but at least those I can replace eventually. What a pain in an otherwise great experience.

On any of these turbos, get durable air filters. Had a friend whose air filter folded and entered the turbo. The turbo shattered and entered the intake and broke the valves and pistons. I believe he said that filter cost him $6000+ and that was in 2012 i believe

I would only use OEM filters, or very high quality aftermarket.... Some of the parts store cheapies are not reinforced and can fall apart.

My grandpa recently bought a studebaker Avanti sight unseen and from a dealership across the country. No issues with shipping other than waiting for it, unfortunately that "perfect" condition Avanti has just been a pain. He's working on it though and i really like it :)

Not a car, but had a friend that bought a new modular home. I got a call after the shipping (& dealership) company dragged a half through a ditch, & subsequently the long end over the crown of the road ripping floor joist out of their hangers. Was told the 2nd half was going to be delayed a few days because of a truck break down. He called me with the start of the issues, so I did some checking ... The president of the company that manufactured the home told me no, the shipper didn't have a breakdown (the dealership had their own people), they had hit a bridge with the other half & were trying to repair it before the owner found out... The dealership was very surprised I had found out about their lies... Definitely do some background checks & reviews before you entrust ANYTHING to a shipper...! Thanx !

2012 and older diesels are the way to go. No stupid EPA regulations. Wizard, you are 100% correct. All that additional emissions equipment is "choking the life" out of the engine. Literally! Luckily, in Texas they are pretty relaxed with deleted diesels, unless youre "rolling coal" down the road

Ehhh actually it’s around 03 before the EGR started and 07 the DPF… both nothing but problems and choke the hell out of the engine.

I sprung for the aluminum mode doors and pulled the dash out to replace all of them. Went ahead and replaced the heater core and evaporator. Don’t have to worry about them anymore.

This makes me cringe so much. As a dealer, shipping companies give me so much anxiety. We have customers set up their own shipping, and I've had a few damaged cars and chaos. The customers who pay for the big fully enclosed semis usually have the best experiences, only way I'd ever ship any of my cars. You get what you pay for!

There is a catch to those Air Tags. Someone with an iPhone has to be within blue tooth range. It is actually giving you the location of the apple device that pinged it, not the air tag itself

There’s TONS of hot shot drivers that literally have zero business being in the shipping business. Many of which have very little if any experience loading, delivering or especially hauling. And honestly? As a trucker with well over 2 million miles. There’s MANY steering wheel holders in 18 wheeler ls that also have ZERO business in the business.

VinWiki, a show you were on recently, did an episode a while back about the problems associated with vehicle shipping. Their conclusion was none of them can be trusted and youre better off driving your vehicle cross country yourself if possible.

Be very careful when choosing a shipping company. Car shipping is full of very seedy “companies”. I’m sure there are responsible ones, but as said, you must pay. Do not choose the lowest bidder.

There are a bunch of great diesel shops on the east coast. I take my dodge 2500 cummins to 603 diesel in new Hampshire. A bit on the pricey side, never had a bad experience. Spot on with finding the problem and fixing it. They also have manchester diesel and central diesel professionals in Boston Massachusetts. I heard great things about those shops.
