We said if we got 1000 likes on the last video with these cars we would do a drag race. Well, we finally got the cars back together and on an airfield so here it is. But who will win?

M57, ls3, om606 but all of them have automatic gearboxes or manual gearboxes. This would make it more even. But it would be good to see the zero to 60 and 1/4 mile times. Wonder if we could have them going around a muddy race track, with a couple of jumps? Still a very interesting video tho. Them two would shock a lot of modern boy races.

Sorry to say Dave, but having paused the start on each run, you jumped the start on all 3. Not good mate. 👎🏻🤣 Great vid though. If both were either manual or auto (with fair starts), I think the BMW would have it.

M57 probaly fits the defenders character better, but the ls3 will feel more special and have more personality, that said i chose the defender...

i’m running a twin turbo iron small block chevy(10psi) in a dakar 4x4 running 35” MT. Draggy; 0-60 is 5.68 and 1/4 is 13.9s

The driving position in 90’s is do uncomfortable..even with upgrade the dash in the diesel is still wobbly 😂

Indeed! POWER is this great calculation we came up with years ago but suddenly in the last 20 years thanks to moronic car journalist people actually think Torque wins races! 😂

Hey Dave here yes I’d be in a m57 so it’s a great comparison. As you can see from this video our cars run clean no huge amounts of black bellowing out of the m57 we pride ourselves on building reliable CLEAN powerful machines.

Auto vs manual and more jumping than bugs bunny. I doubt it would make any difference if it was played fairly because thats a lot more power in the V8 but it would be nice to see a fair comparrisson of the cars rather than the drivers ability to "predict" the start.

Now you are being cruel to these girls. Think about the transfer boxes and UJ's. With the best will in the world they are not made for such antics. They are amazing looking bits of kit but really they are show ponies for the wealthy. As for the drag race - Dave you jumped the start on the first two runs to my eyes going well before the starters arm dropped.

Worked at bmw and drove bmw models with the 330d and there v8 would have the 330d engine all day long mpg and torque

We were a bit pushed for time filming and daves device had some default settings which we didn’t update. We’ll do better next time

m57 weights in at 104kg while the LS3 weights in at 210kg. somehow i think the LS3 is just for bragging rights. for better driving it would be the M57. try driving the ls3 on twisty country lanes. i would prefer an OM606 or the M57. or even an M113 v8 mercedes engine at about 190kg and strapping a rear mounted turbo would add another 35kg but will be around 600bhp. the LS3 is a better option for drag racing due to the huge off the shelf parts rather than a daily. whats the MGP for the LS3? 12mpg? and offroad? all that weight in front would unstable on many inclines. iffy. i prefer the om606 but m57 wins the LS 3 every day if we dont count the jump starts. cant even say it was a fair race all 3 times. and auto vs manual means we need to look into gear ratios for the manual. should he have started in 2nd? at 2000rpm the m57 is dumping over 360ft/lbs. . then the 1st gear ratio it that the 3.00:1 or 3.60:1. i would have used 2nd gear to start @1750 to reduce wheel spin. maybe LS3 manual vs m57 auto

LS 3 is gasoline and the M57 which is diesel stands no chance,you see it right from off the line acceleration where the LS3 starts to win.

@@wearemahker haha, glad to hear it! Not to take anything away from these amazing vehicles. There's a channel called Mr Heads, they usually deal with tanks, but just published an old school modded defender with Jensen V8. It's crazy. You might enjoy it.

Even when the 330d got the jump at the start it still got smoked! What did you expect? Power to weight will always win races! Also there’s no lag in the ls3….

What transmission? I tried to understand but it is wired. So I have gone to the 1 year old video but I also could not find / hear the info on what transmission is behind the LS? Actually this result makes me wonder. 430 vs 480 HP and a lot more NM on the Diesel engine but a 6 speed manual. Especially from start the M57 should not loose so much ground. BUT: ENGINE TORQUE means nothing (!) as it is multiplied by the diff (roughly 3,7?) and gearing. Most manuals start with ca. 4,3 in first, 3,3, 2,7, and so on. the last as overdrive 0,8 or something. So 900NM crank x 3,7 x 4,3 = WHEEL torque. NOTHING else matters, depending on how long you need pulling. Like Diesel from 2-4.5trpm - LS 3-6.5trpm! IF there is a ZF 8HP behind: This will outperform any manual: 8HP70 (2.gen) = 5: 1 in first! and 2 more gear = more wheel torque in any gear.

The 6L80 is similar to a ZF6HP. A pretty strong and relatively fast gearbox from factory. Afaik 1 OD gear, so the first 5 are relatively near to each other. Imho shouldnt give the LS too much of an advantage.@@wearemahker

LOL...that dude can't drive to save his azs!!! Not a fair comparison by any stretch. If you don't have 2 people that actually know how to drive, then the same guy should drive both vehicles, and time the runs. This was silly, at best. Jump starts, bad drivers, and manual vs auto transmission...yea, not comparable, at all

Not really a good comparison. In fact, it probably only proves just how lame and pathetic a massive sized yank V8 petrol engine is, compared to an oil burning tiny German engine.
