Chevy S-10 Complete Buyer's Guide and Used truck Buying Advice!
2nd Gen Chevy S10 Buyers Guide. This video will cover in detail the 2nd generation Chevy S-10 built from 1994-2004 for the USA market. We cover all of the aspects of the S10 compact pickup truck, from its exterior, the interior design and materials, the 2.2L and the 4.3L engines available, and the common problems or issues with the truck.
We also take a look at several different Chevrolet concept trucks, like the Highlander Truck Concept shown at the 1993 Chicago Auto Show, The 1997 Chevy Hugger Concept which would become the S-10 Extreme, and the Extreme T-Top concept truck that had removable glass roofs like the Camaro T-Top coupe.
S10 Common problems are also covered. We talk about potential rust issues on the frame and the wheel arches and cab corners. Also, we talk about the 2.2L timing chain and tensioner, 4cyl potential head gasket issues, and 4 cylinder exhaust flex pipe that can rust or break off, causing a very loud exhaust sound. For the 4.3L Vortec V6, we discuss the intake manifold gaskets that can break or dissolve creating a coolant leak or coolant loss.
A complete buyer's guide and related information if you're looking to purchase a used S10 Truck.

@m V absolutely. I'm looking for another S10 to use as my daily work truck as I'm starting to build and customize my 97. It's the perfect little truck to start up a lawn care business with. It might be worth stepping up to a zr2 4x4. Great little 4x4s with lots of heart and can handle lawn recycling dumps with very few worries.

I bought my S-10 brand new in 2002. It was October and new 2003 were arriving so mine was on sale. $11K plus tax. It is the short bed and regular cab. It is the LS model. It has the 2.2 Liter with 5 speed standard transmission. I live in the south so there is no rust or whatsoever. The rims are five spoke aluminum. It actually has only 114K miles in the odometer. I took public transportation to work so I only drove it 3 miles a day to the bus terminal for 12 years before I retired. I have been driving this truck to Canada every year. 2K miles round trip. It also has taken me to Florida several times and Texas as well. Mostly highway miles but it is my regular daily driver around here as well. At 100K miles I got new spark plugs, wires and brakes replaced. I believed I replaced tires (Michelin) 3 times since new. Changed oil every 5K miles. The radiator was replaced because the glue holding the plastic dried. The color is pewter with black interior. It's been an excellent vehicle. Never abused and changed gears decently so clutch has never been replaced. I have it for 19 years now. I love my little truck.

My first S10 was a 1985. I bought it brand-new for $6,100 and drove it for 12 years. It was super-stripped, had an Isuzu 4-cylinder engine, two-wheel drive and manual transmission. It got like a thousand miles per gallon and never gave me ANY trouble. It ALWAYS started, even on our sub-zero Minnesota winter days and nights. My second S10 is a 2001 LS 4X4 with full crew cab. I bought it used for $5,000 and am still driving it 10 years later. With the 4-wheel-drive and a good set of tires, not even a horrific Minnesota snowstorm can stop it, which is perfect for me as I am a first responder and need to be able to get to work no matter what the road conditions are. Thanks for the awesome, informative video!

Damn, I also have an 01 crew cab 4wd and it is just the BIGGEST piece of shit I've ever owned. The whole truck needs about $6000 worth of work done even though it has 88k miles. Yeah. Great cosmetic shape also. Everyone keeps saying how great of trucks these are but I must have got the absolute worst one ever made because literally everything on it needs something done to it. I've owned it about 3 years now but really have only driven it about one year collectively because it's always sitting and breaking down on me. Name something on the truck, I guarantee you it needs to be replaced

Bought mine new in 03, Sonoma zr2 4x4. Only new car I've ever bought. Drove it for a couple months, I hen moved back east and gave it to my dad. He hadn't had a new car in years, and I had my 100 year anniversary dyna super glide to ride. Dad used to drive it to my house a couple times a week. He liked the track, so it got exhaust, chipped, racing brake system, multispark ignition, you name it. Dad passed in 2020 at the beginning of coviid, and I had to be executor to get his affairs in order. He had multiple vehicles, suburban, Yukon, 2 bmw bikes(he bought the 05 r1150r rockstar to ride cross country with me when I moved home a 2nd time. 2 boats, and multiple storage units. I found the Sonoma with two old box trucks in a storage yard close to the house. Completely loaded down with stuff inside and out, all tires flat, intake manifold in pieces in truck, both box trucks were the same. My buddy helped me tow it to my house after I paid storage, and we got it fired up that day. The sound of the hi flow exhaust brought tears. Same sound as when dad used to pull up. I spent the next year+ putting that truck back together. Spent over 15k. Just got back from a road trip to Colorado with my 600lbs Honda rancher 4x4 in the bed. 4k miles roundtrip in 11 days. Odometer now reads 196k, and I wouldn't sell this truck for less than I paid new in LA when I bought it. Typical Sonoma issues being vacuum system, spiderweb injectors, blew the tranny cooler and had to rebuild, vacuum ball replaced in Colorado. These are pieces of functional artwork, and mine will be on the road for as long as I can find parts for it.

Other than that, my 2000 4x4 s10 has given 0 issues. Regular oil changes and tire rotations... thing is a champ. With 222k miles I've only done a radiator change, water pump, thermo housing, thermostat, and my cats got clogged so I sawzalled and straight piped it (live in Florida) and the thing still runs like a champ at 222k miles I drive it to work everyday 60 miles. Love my black '96 s10 ext cab LS model with the 4.3L 'X' code engine (2WD). In the process of doing a full restoration. Making it to look like a SS with the black grill but still retaining the "Z85" payload. Upgrades include: trailblazer front brake system (a bit pricey but totally recommend it.) Upgrade the rear end from a one wheel peel to a limited slip diff w/axle hop shock bracket. BILSTEIN shocks all around. Zq8 gear box, zq8 front and rear sway bars and zq8 mid frame bar. Installed Zq8 2nd design 16" x 8" 5 spoke wheels on goodyear eagle all season tires. 3rd anti-hop shock install. Did a complete engine rebuild with a melling oil pump. Upgrade injector setup (soon to do a marine intake upgrade) ECM tune. EGR delete. Electric fan set up. This truck is doing a combine 21mpg hwy/city. The trans is still the stock 4l60E but next year I will have it built to tow. Truck just turned over 200k. Looking to get a 8.5" rear disc rear end out of blazer and do interior upgrades at least on the seat to a 98-04. Installed a trans temp gauge and swapped the orginal cluster with one that has a tach gauge. The only thing I wish this truck had was the 3rd door and was stick but I'm so far very pleased with it for owning it 5 years now. Will be shooting a video on what it has been going on with it, possibly posting it on youtube!

But I have replaced just about everything on it, sometimes a couple of times. Everything from the transmission, AC compressor (twice), starter, motor mounts, radiator (twice), water pump, wheel bearings, axle shafts, alternator (twice), ABS computer, master cylinder (twice), brake booster, muffler, wiper controller, head gasket, distributor, and fuel pump. Probably more stuff I have forgotten about. But engine is still solid. You be the judge.

I've had 3 Chevy s10 s and reliable is true 4.3 iron horse!!! But I did drop 12k into my crew cab engine and trans and drive shift and other..why??? Cause I know it will run like champ til 2030 . Things that I've experienced to look out for are.....as mentioned intake gasket. But also this list! Definitely alternators, fuel pump, upper and lower ball joints, water pump, lifters sticking, rear diff cover rust and seal leak, trans seal, abs module? ( in progress) replace radiator, tensioner etc... misc i did was Bilsten 4600 shocks, switched to synthetic oil at 95k, and transmission to synthetic fluid, brakes total assembly and hoses etc, sway bar link, summit tune up with iridium platinum sparks, k&n regular air filter, not the exposed one kept it stock..why there's no difference. Custom battery yellow top, What I plan to do is to get long Tube headers with a high flow cat and magnaflow 50 or 60 exhaust also a custom intake where they have that lip inside And rather removed some more air can get in the carb! A true cold air intake by putting a hose from the air Box under the vehicle to a opening port in front hidden like a jet engine. that is true cold air intake! this is what happens when you hang out with guys with show cars and pros A computer programmer to be plugged in don't know who or brand do yet! Mechanically that's it... what I do suggest is in your quarter panels the rocker panel in inside your bed to buy fluid film and spray the hell out of inside of those areas and underneath the vehicle sand frame down the metal used the chemical to convert back to metal use alcohol to clean it then spray nutrarust and then put raptor liner on it and then spray fluid film so I doesn't rust ...also plan on putting custom rims, Custom stereo with rear camera and custom lights all around....plus custom body parts,, hood, tonneau, front spoiler, mirrors, New bumper!!! ....most reliable truck of all time...

Of course I had to replace a few parts like any other vehicle. Wear n tear but one hell of a truck. I'm still looking for a fourwheel S10. Cause me and my dogs love to go camping. Thank you Steners.

97 S10 4.3L 5speed. I put a Torsen differential from a Camaro in the rear axle. So it doesn't get stuck on wet grass anymore. Mine has 200k on it. I've always maintained it well. No dents good paint and interior. The A/C broke years ago,I never bothered fixing it. I did have to replace the distributor & I replaced the intake gaskets before they started leaking. One of the front springs is bad. I have new ones,I just haven't had time to replace those lately. I'm going to replace the ball joints while I have it apart. I'll probably just keep driving it until the wheels fall off.

I did the same on my 93. I found a basically new Torsen take out from a local gear and rear end shop. Installed it and had a blast. Would do sweet fish tails in the rain because the truck had no damn weight in the back. Bought the truck as a project in 2002. Did a lot of work and had a lot of fun in it. I parted it out in 2014 after some assholes broke into it and broke the dash stealing the stereo. We couldn't find a descent dash to replace mine so insurance paid me for all the stolen stereo stuff and I parted it out and made some money back and funded my 4X4 project.

If you are able to find a ZR2 99-2005 Blazer in good condition buy it. These vehicles were the flagship for those years offered by Chevy in the S10 model series. They sold for anywhere from $25k to 30K. The Blazer ZR2 was offered in the 2 door model only which has one of the best design looks ever offered in S10s. It also has a factory lift kit with wide stance. The ZR2 S10 Blazer was used by search and rescue teams and agencies all over the US for their amazing 4x4 abilities and its dependability.

@garycarter7087

I had a 2001 s10 crewcab red which I lifted for an off road mod and it did great off road for only having a open diff in the front. I for one didn't realize my engine mounts were bad in it though... Somehow the engine mounting was designed in a way that made it initially hard to tell if your engine mounts were gone (not just shot or worn out. I mean might as well not be there.) There wasn't any engine rattle or visible twisting. But the engine was practically sitting right on top of the front diff supported by the oil pan, it burst a hole in the pan large enough for mechanics to say it can't be patched but also small enough that I didn't notice it between oil changes since it was clogged with dirt. But also I don't really pay attention to if the oil pan is directly on the diff where it doesn't belong so there's that Because I didn't know the engine mounts were out it naturally raised the transmission and drive shaft up enough for the drive shaft to put enough strain on the rear diff and leak diff oil which in turn blew up my diff. Then the drive shaft started hitting my body, I did a 1 inch body lift which shouldn't do much of anything else to the truck and solved that problem after putting in a new complete rear axle. Then the engine fan broke and started hitting the body. I went through 3 radiators because of this until I had the time to get rid of that fan and replace it with an electric one. That's about the time I found out about the oil pan with the hole after changing the oil and cleaning the undercarriage to sell the truck. I replaced the engine mounts then the oil pan (which is a complete pain and not worth the time) then replaced the timing cover and gasket. But all of this work with the radiator and fan had already caused the truck to over heat. If you let this truck over heat just once, that engine will never be the same. Other engines can handle it better, but this engine made no effort to be strong after that point. It would constantly fume lock on me in the middle of the road and somtimes where I had no service. Fume locking is when the gas gets hot enough to boil and creates pressure and fumes before it reaches the combustion chamber. I'm not sure how hot gas needs to be to explode but the idea of fume locking is bad enough. Tldr: I don't trust this truck. One small problem ended up costing me somewhere between $6-7k in one year. It wasn't my idea to own this truck to begin with it was my dad's idea of having a project vehicle for the sake of "knowing what the read world is like" if your a person who doesn't know too much about mechanical work I honestly consider you lucky but with no hard feelings

I bought a 2001 LS 4.3 S10 regular cab in 2003 with 28000 miles from the original owner. They had done regular maintenance, and I have also maintained the truck very well, changing the oil every 3000-3500 miles. Today it’s still my daily driver. I’m a car guy, so it still looks almost as good as it did new, and runs great. I’ve had to replace some of the bolt on’s, but have never been in the motor. I have added Barr’s Leak to it every now and then, and still haven’t had to replace the intake gasket, even though I’m at over 338,000 miles. The rear end whines a little, and the tranny is starting to act up sporadically by toggling in and out of overdrive or high gear when in a slight pull. I still like my old S10 today as much as the day I bought it. My intentions are to never sell it, and the plan is to LS swap it in 2026 when it’s 25 years old and no longer has to be emissions tested, (I live in metro Atlanta.) So it goes without saying that I highly recommend these little trucks. Before you buy, just try and make sure the maintenance has been done on a regular basis. I would want that information to have been documented if possible. S10’s are great vehicles as long as they’re cared for and maintained.

I sold it to him when it had 252k miles on it. Now it's got 340k on it. If I thought it was gonna last that much longer,I'd have kept it. In fact I didn't really want to sell it to him because of the high mileage. I missed that truck. I went out and bought a 97 4.3L 5 speed. It hasn't been as reliable as the 2.2L. I've spent kind of alot on fixing this one. It's never left me stranded though. Except for that one time it got stuck on muddy wet grass when I went fishing out in the middle of nowhere. LOL. @@barbiesawada5916 I didn't realize you are modding it. I changed the gear ratio in mine also. I put 3.42 in it with a Zexel Torsen carrier out of a SLP Camaro. If I was gonna do it again I'd go with a 3.73. It really doesn't matter whatever ratio you choose. Dakota Digital makes a little electronic box to recalibrate your speedometer. You may need one to get your 4l60E to shift correctly. Otherwise your shift points will be all messed up. I have one. I needed it to recalibrate my speedometer. My truck came with 3.08 gears. They even make one that adapts an old TH350 to electronic speedometer. It's good quality,I been using mine for about 2yrs and no issues. I just replaced the 4.3L in mine. I was thinking about getting a 5.7L Vortec. I just don't really have the time to mess around with it. The 4.3L is ok. It does what I need it to do. The 4.3L is a tight fit by itself. I think I'd probably have to take the front end off grill, bumper, radiator core support and whatever else that would get in the way? To make anything bigger fit in that engine bay. Right now I'm working on getting the A/C to work again. The compressor went bad years ago. Next I'm gonna replace the ball joints and front springs. This truck is lucky because I was considering getting rid of it and buying something else. I was looking around for another truck, but I couldn't find anything for less than about $10k. Actually the old engine was still good. It needed new heads and the timing chain was sloppy and it had an oil leak. I replaced it because I didn't want to do all that work and put an engine that had 200k miles on it back in there. I'm breaking the engine in now. So far so good. No funny sounds and it's running good. I put about 165 miles on it. Good luck with your project. Actually I was just thinking. You may not need one of those Dakota Digital recalibration modules. I think the newer CPU are easier to reprogram than the older ones like mine has. You may even be able to reprogram it yourself with an Autel Maxi-pro bi-direcional diagnostic scanner. I have one I love it. It does alot of stuff, even runs the ABS pump for bleeding ABS brakes. It might be able to do that? I've never even thought about it until now.

Only reason I didn't go with a 4.3 is the fuel mileage , better mileage on a 5.3 and better upgrades available, not sure what gears we are using yet , either 3;42 or 3:53 , plan on changing out gauge cluster with a NVU , Dakota I've spoken to but their lead time is like 6 months now and they are expensive. Cluster that comes with the 5.3 is programmable to do deletes and change tire sizes and gear sizes. 4:10 and 3:73 are alittle to much for a little truck as a daily driver, 300 + horsepower on that light rear-end is alot , it's light enough that 3:53 gears in a Ford 8.8 will still launch extremely fast.

I have a 1995 that came with the 2.2 and a automatic. As the video said , the early 2.2 engines had head gasket issues, after my 2nd one with only 72,000 I have decided to do a 5.3 engine swap. Truck had a off the frame restoration after the 1st owner decided to use stop leak on the corroded cooling system. But in short , a bit of advice, do not go with the 2.2 and go with the 4.3 instead. I had to turn off the AC just to pull a hill. They have engineering issues that will leave you scratching your head but with some patience and TLC you can have a classic little Truck that is more popular today than their production life span ...

Good trucks. Until the security system fails! If that fails, you either spend a couple thousand to have the dealer replace it or you junk it. I love these trucks but the factory security system is what keeps me from owning another one.

I have a '98 extended cab with the 4.3 and now has 157,000 miles on it and still runs like new. I've seen 4.3 with almost 300,000 on them.

397,000 on my 97 I used to own and it still ran good when I pulled the engine to do a V8 swap. I can't say the same about the 5 speed thou.
