In this video I have a look at a Chevy Trailblazer that is having some problems with the electronic viscous fan clutch. Seems like a silly design for a cooling fan but it is pretty easy to diagnose once you know how it works. -Enjoy!

Eric, I'm teaching an electricity fundamentals class to a bunch homeschool boys. We are approaching understanding PWM, but I am frustrated that I can't design a good lab for theory reinforcement. I don't own an O scope. Your scope videos like this one are just what I need. I intend to pirate a video for my lab. I also intend to have the class view some of your videos to reinforce understanding the need for testing, validation, and absolute certainty before making the call and ordering the part. My students are 8-16, and I anticipate that possibly 3 of them will pursue electrical trouble shooting careers. Your real world trouble shooting is the spirit that I hope to convey to my students. I spent my career as an industrial electrician/mechanic. Training my coworkers and subordinates to become TROUBLESHOOTERS was a career long task. Our department had the highest respect in the plant, because when my technicians "made the call" no one challenged them. The correct part was condemned, repaired or replaced. I am retired and I no longer have to diagnose and turn wrenches (or supervise the crew that I trained) daily, but I enjoy taking the ride with you. I sometimes scream at my phone when you step out of the auto repair shop closer into "my" world and I know a better way. I never enjoyed working on cars, and you broaden my understanding of your world. You are a pro. You would have excelled in my world and I I would have enjoyed working with you if you had been one of my team members.

While everyone is complaining about CAFE, I want to remind you that before CAFE, we had shit in the air a mile thick. Cars got about 8 miles to the gallon average and any idiot could work on cars, or at least they thought so!! We changed out plugs and points almost as often as oil and engines didn't last 100K. Plus there would not have been a need to ever watch Eric as the points change videos would be incredibly boring. So show a bit of appreciation for having much cleaner air and cars getting much better mileage and engines lasting 2-3 times longer AND being able to watch Eric figure things out and fix them. I am at 122K on my F250 and still on the same old factory plugs. Hell, 99% of the truck is factory and still runs great.

If the bearing for the viscous fan coupling has play in it,that may be causing the Hall sensor to throw out an erroneous reading as it can no longer maintain a clean square wave due to the fact the toothed wheel or whatever has started to flop around,so the signal ends up dirty,all broken up & garbled at higher RPMs !

I worked for GM as a consultant in the mid 2000s when there was a push to improve quality. At the time we recommended the simplification of electrical systems to improve the quality, and to gradually to increase the complexity so the quality could come along with it. We also instituted Kaizen process improvement to help with the data coming back from dealerships to fix and redesign every year problem areas. As a result of these two moves GM's quality has improved today although it still does not quite match Toyota. To answer your question, two fans at the time increased complexity and was not attempted. I believe it was added in the early 2010s.

@@wyokaiju992 The way our job was is we were assigned to specific divisions, and not the divisions you are thinking of. I was assigned to Allison Transmission for example, in Indianapolis (their headquarters). Counterparts were assigned at Saab first, their smallest division. Others were assigned to GM Powertrain. Last, some were assigned to Buick which is not that small, because of China (over a million cars sold annually there, about 250,000 in the USA). Those divisions we worked directly with. They took those learnings and applied it to the remaining divisions after the bankruptcy, so besides GM Powertrain, Pontiac never got the training.

Hi Eric! I have an somewhat unrelated scenario. A 2017 Mini comes in with a burning smell under the hood. Confirmed customer complaint for sure. There is definitely a burning (almost electrical ) smell. We removed the bumper etc. to get to things (thinking alternator). After running it on the lift for better part of the day the burning smell kept concentrating in different locations in the engine compartment. No visible burnt wires or components but a very concentrated smell by the valve cover. Did I mention this is a standard shift car (best theft deterrent ever!)? It turns out the driver has abused the clutch and when removing the slave cylinder we found friction material in the bell housing. This really smelled like something electrical! Like to see a scan tool find this one! All the Best, G.

The most likely reason the fan shroud is broken is because at one time someone removed the fan without removing it with the shroud. If you try to remove the fan without removing it with the shroud most of the time you will break the shroud and in rare cases break the fan. Its not that hard to remove them together and it will save some parts in the process. Really good breakdown on the sensor failure. These actually are a somewhat common failure on these vehicles.

They replaced my shoes and rear drums and spliced into a good section of my brake line just to get me home. When I finally had enough to finish the brake job I took my car back to the shop and every time the shop went to bleed my brakes another brake line popped. I went in for just one brake line and ended up getting all my brake lines fixed for the price of just one. Thanks Mavis Discount Tire. Same as the old fan clutch types except instead of using a simple temp sensing bi- metal spring to open the fluid reservoir and engage the clutch it uses inputs from transmission, AC, Hall effect and engine temp sensors for the computer to activate the clutch. Not sure why they needed to change the design. It seemed to work well. The only time the fan is really needed is when there is no air flow or when the vehicle is not in motion. I prefer the older style fan clutch. Much less that can go wrong. Nice job Eric

Good video, but I am concerned about the loose bearing and that could throw off the hall effect switch. But either way, the fan clutch will need to be replaced, because it's all one unit in the fan clutch, and I don't think that it's rebuildable. Thanks for sharing....

Just like PWM on the HVAC blower only with a sensor instead of human and knob. BTW Eric, the sensor on that fan works like the one in the reformatted hard drive PC. 3 wires, 5V ground and a PWM output to see if the fan is working. Had to reprogram one when they changed fan models.

Hello Mr Eric, I have a kia sportage 4wd. I watched a video of you changing the bearing in the rear end. Thanks so much for that. just a question? i do not have a host so i have to back the car up on ramps. If i put the car in neutral can i still twist the drive shaft with out the rear wheels turning to remove the allen bolts?

Ahhh the dreaded fan clutch. I had so many problems with that as well. Ended up changing it to a thermal and sending pcm to a tuneshop to delete codes. No problems since. I do think that they used a fan clutch because the engine is all aluminum which gets hotter much faster than a regular engine with cast block with aluminum heads. However letting it reach 260 before full command in fan clutch is just absurd in my opinion

I would just like to convert the damn thing to a bi-metal fan clutch like on my 2000 s10 with 4.3 v6. They attach to water pump similarly. or maybe remove it all to together and add an electric fan. any consequences to vehicle operation other than the check engine light?
@christopherzube551
@christopherzube551 4 жыл бұрын
@@mistermechanic2257 you can buy a thermal fan clutch on rock auto. For years 2002 to 2007 used the electric viscous fan clutch. 2008 and 2009 used a thermal. You can buy a thermal for year 2009 and it will still work. You will have service engine soon light on but is still driveable. Then if I was you I would send the pcm to get tuned that can delete the dtc codes. Their is pcm4less and lime-swap.com. I did mine with lime-swap.com and love it. You can message him and does pretty well emailing back with answers to any questions you have. It's 100 bucks but well worth it

Thanks for that video , I’m currently having the same problem on a 2006 LR3 with code P0480 . Replaced the fan but no improvement. Hooked my original fan on to another LR3 and the fan ok . So now I now the problem if not from the fan but it will somewhere from the connector at the fan to the ECU . And here where I’m lost . I got the wiring diagram for the fan , but I don’t have a scope to check the wave form , I’m using a maxisys P809 as scantool and a good multimeter. Any tips Will be much appreciated .
